UR means “Unbalanced Load Retry.” Your Samsung washer has detected that the laundry is unevenly distributed and is trying to add water, rebalance the load, then spin again. The attempt can lengthen the cycle; Samsung says UR by itself does not mean the washer is faulty. Start by redistributing the laundry, then check the load and the washer’s level if the message returns.
What the UR code means
Samsung US Support describes UR as the washer trying to add more water, balance the load, and run the spin cycle again. It is a retry status, not a diagnosis of a failed component. The cycle may take longer while the washer attempts to correct the imbalance. See Samsung’s washing machine information and error codes.
UR is not interchangeable with every unbalanced-load code. Samsung groups several codes under unbalanced loads, but UR specifically describes another balancing-and-spin attempt; other codes in that group can indicate that the cycle will not complete. The exact code behavior can vary by model and market, so check your washer’s manual if its display or response differs from this description.
How to respond to UR
- Pause or open the washer only as your model allows. Follow the controls and door-safety instructions in the user manual.
- Untangle and redistribute the laundry. Spread items around the drum so they are not bunched together on one side.
- Close the door and restart the cycle using your model’s controls. Samsung’s code guidance recommends closing the door and restarting after the load has been balanced.
- Watch whether the retry completes. If UR returns, consider whether the load size or item mix may be contributing before assuming a mechanical fault.
Check the load size and mix
Small loads
A small load can gather to one side of the drum, making it harder to balance. Redistribute the items; if the load is too small to spread evenly, adding suitable laundry may help. Do not exceed the washer’s capacity or put in items that the manual says should not be washed together.

Large or absorbent items
Bulky, absorbent laundry can become tangled and uneven. Separate tangled items and spread them around the drum. Samsung also suggests reducing spin speed for large items in its guidance on a washer that shakes too much. Follow the care labels and your model’s instructions; there is no single ideal load weight that applies to every Samsung washer.
Check whether the washer is level
If the load is reasonably distributed but the washer continues to struggle, check that the appliance is level and stable. Samsung’s no-spin guidance and shaking guidance advise checking the level and adjusting the feet if needed. Use the installation instructions for your model when making adjustments. A small spirit level can help you check the appliance, but Samsung does not require one as a purchase; the important step is following the model-specific setup instructions.

When to contact Samsung support
If UR keeps returning after you have redistributed the laundry and checked the washer’s setup, consult the user manual and contact Samsung support or service for your model and region. Do not treat the code alone as proof of a failed suspension, bearing, sensor, or control board.
