Samsung Wallet is the newer app that brings Samsung Pay’s payment-card functions together with Samsung Pass and other supported digital items. Paying with a card and qualifying for its usual rewards or benefits remain central functions. Wallet adds features such as storing membership cards, digital keys, and boarding passes—but what you can use depends on your country or region, phone, carrier, firmware, and the specific card or service.

Is Samsung Wallet different from Samsung Pay?

Yes, but it is best understood as an expanded home for Samsung Pay rather than a wholly separate payment system. Samsung describes Wallet as built on the Samsung Pay app, with features from Samsung Pass and additional digital items. The payment-card function remains part of the experience; the change is that supported non-payment items can live alongside payment cards in one app.

Samsung announced the Wallet name and combined app on June 16, 2022. At launch, Samsung described a transition for eligible users through their existing Pay or Pass apps in the initial markets. That announcement named the United States, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom. Those countries describe the launch announcement, not a current or complete list of places where every Wallet feature is available.

So if you are comparing the services, the practical distinction is scope: Samsung Pay was primarily associated with payments, while Samsung Wallet includes those payment functions plus selected Pass features and other digital items. The expanded name does not mean every user receives every feature that Samsung lists.

What changed when Samsung Pay became Wallet?

Payment cards remain a core function

Wallet continues to support payment cards on compatible devices and for supported cards and payment situations. Samsung’s US purchases FAQ says card rewards and benefits, including points or cash back, continue when paying through Wallet. The card issuer’s rules and the merchant’s and transaction’s conditions still apply; the app’s name alone does not guarantee a reward on every purchase.

Pass and other digital items can be in the same app

Samsung describes Wallet as a place for payment and membership cards, gift cards, digital keys, health passes, digital assets, and boarding passes. Samsung Pass features are part of the combination as well. These are categories Samsung supports in some circumstances, not a promise that each category is available in every market or on every Galaxy device. A particular key, pass, card, or service also needs to be supported by its provider.

The transition was not a universal feature guarantee

Samsung’s 2022 announcement said eligible users in the initial markets could migrate through their existing Samsung Pay or Samsung Pass apps. It also cautioned that timing and features could differ by market and device. That is useful context for understanding why the app changed, but it should not be read as a guarantee that every historical Pay feature or every Pass item transferred unchanged for every account.

What still works in Samsung Wallet?

Paying with supported cards

For a user whose phone, location, card, and transaction are supported, Wallet retains the payment-card role associated with Samsung Pay. If you have used Samsung Pay to pay with a card, the relevant question is generally whether that same card and payment method are supported in Wallet for your device and market—not whether the app still carries the old name.

  • Galaxy S23 sports a 6.1-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X flat display with adaptive 48–120 Hz refresh rate, HDR10+, and a peak brightness high enough for strong outdoor visibility — giving you vibrant, crisp visuals and smooth motion while staying compact.

Card rewards and benefits

Samsung’s US FAQ says card rewards such as points or cash back continue when a purchase is made through Wallet. The reward comes under the card issuer’s terms and can also depend on merchant and transaction conditions. Check the card’s own benefit rules when a purchase category, offer, or merchant exclusion matters.

Transit, where the local system is supported

Transit is not one universal Wallet capability. As a US example, Samsung’s FAQ names Atlanta MARTA as a supported transit-card system. It says a configured transit card can be tapped without unlocking the phone and does not need a network connection for use; an internet connection is needed to purchase a transit card. This describes that FAQ’s US example, not transit support in every city or country. Check Samsung’s local guidance and the transit agency’s requirements for the route you use.

Question Samsung Pay Samsung Wallet
Main role Payment-card functions were the primary association. Samsung describes Wallet as built on the Samsung Pay app and retaining its payment-card role.
Payment-card rewards Payment-card benefits were associated with eligible card purchases. Samsung’s US purchases FAQ says points and cash-back benefits continue; issuer, merchant, and transaction rules apply.
Pass and digital items Samsung Pay alone was not the combined home described at Wallet’s launch. Can include Samsung Pass features and supported items such as membership and gift cards, digital keys, health passes, digital assets, and boarding passes.
Transit Support depended on the relevant system and market. Support remains local and system-specific; Samsung’s US FAQ names Atlanta MARTA and describes use of a configured card without unlocking or a network connection.
Availability Varied by market and compatible device. Varies by country or region, device model, carrier, firmware, and the particular item or service.

The table describes the distinction Samsung establishes between the older payment-focused app and the current combined Wallet experience. It does not establish that every item once available in Pay is available to every Wallet user.

Will Samsung Wallet work on your Galaxy phone?

Samsung’s US FAQ says Wallet is available on compatible Galaxy devices running Android 9 or later and lists the Galaxy S24 family among compatible models. That is a US compatibility reference, not a worldwide guarantee or a complete list of supported phones. Samsung also says features and content can vary by country or region, device model, carrier, and firmware.

Before relying on a specific capability, verify the exact phone and feature against Samsung’s compatibility guidance for your location. A phone may be eligible to run Wallet without supporting every item inside it. Payment-card support, transit, a digital key, an ID or pass, and a boarding pass can each have separate eligibility requirements.

How to check whether a feature you need is supported

  1. Identify the specific task. Decide whether you need to pay with a bank card, use a transit card, store a membership or gift card, or use a digital key or pass. General Wallet availability does not confirm support for a particular item.
  2. Check the phone’s exact model and software. Compare them with Samsung’s local Wallet compatibility information. Samsung’s US FAQ gives Android 9 or later on compatible Galaxy devices as its baseline, but model, carrier, and firmware can affect eligibility.
  3. Check your country or region. Use local Samsung guidance rather than the 2022 launch-country list. The announcement is historical and does not show current regional availability for each feature.
  4. Verify the provider or issuer. For a payment card, check the issuer’s support and benefit terms. For transit, check both Samsung’s supported-system information and the transit agency’s instructions. For a key, ID, or pass, confirm that its provider supports Wallet.
  5. Confirm the operating conditions before depending on it. Transit’s offline or locked-phone behavior, where documented, applies to the supported setup Samsung describes; it should not be assumed for a different transit network or digital item.

Should you keep looking for Samsung Pay?

If your goal is to make card payments on a supported Galaxy phone, look for Samsung Wallet and confirm that your card and market are eligible. Wallet is the current combined app described by Samsung, with Samsung Pay’s payment-card functions in it. If you are trying to recover a particular old feature, do not assume the change of name preserved it in your circumstances: check support for that specific feature, device, and region.

If Wallet does not appear or a card or digital item is missing, first confirm the phone’s model, software, carrier, and local eligibility. Then check whether the issuer, transit operator, or item provider supports Wallet in your region. A missing feature can reflect a limitation of that combination rather than a general failure of the payment function.

What Samsung’s security wording does—and does not—establish

At the 2022 launch, Samsung executive Jeanie Han described Wallet as providing “a totally safe and secure environment” for storing digital keys, cards, and more. That is Samsung’s characterization of the product, not independent verification of a security guarantee. The statement does not establish that all Wallet features have identical protections or that any digital credential is risk-free. Follow Samsung’s current security guidance and the requirements of the card or credential provider for the feature you use.
