When Samsung Wallet fails, first identify where the payment flow stops: the app may be frozen, the phone may not be presenting an NFC signal, the terminal may not support the payment method, or the card issuer may be declining the transaction. For tap-to-pay problems, check NFC and the default contactless payment setting before resetting the app. Samsung’s cited troubleshooting guidance is for the US; supported devices, cards, and features vary by region and issuer.
The quickest way to narrow the cause is to note what you see: no response from the reader, an error on the reader, a message inside Wallet, or an app that will not stay open. These are different failure points and call for different next steps. Start with the matching symptom below, and save reset or support steps for problems that remain after the basic checks.
Find where the payment is failing
Use the symptom to choose a starting point. A tap that does nothing points first to the phone’s NFC setup, position, or physical interference. A Wallet app that hangs or closes points to an app problem. A terminal message or decline after it responds to the phone calls for a different check: the reader or the card account may be the issue. A network message in Wallet is another separate category; it calls for checking Wi-Fi or mobile data rather than changing a card or terminal setting.

| What happens | First area to check | Likely next step |
|---|---|---|
| Wallet freezes, will not open, or closes unexpectedly | App and phone | Restart the phone; if the problem remains, follow the app-specific steps. |
| The phone does not trigger a response from the reader | NFC settings, phone position, case, or reader compatibility | Confirm NFC and the default wallet setting, then retest without accessories. |
| The reader responds but shows an error or decline | Card or account, then the issuer | Check the card/account and contact the issuer for a card-side decline. |
| Wallet reports a network problem | Wi-Fi or mobile-data connection | Confirm connectivity and restart if the error continues. |
The distinction between “nothing happened” and “the terminal showed an error” matters. In the first case, the phone and reader may not have established a contactless connection. In the second, payment information may have reached the terminal, so card or account eligibility becomes more relevant. Avoid resetting Wallet simply because one terminal did not respond; that does not establish that the app is the cause.

Samsung notes that settings names and layouts can vary by Galaxy model and software version. If a label below is not an exact match, look in Settings for NFC, contactless payments, or default payment service. Samsung’s US troubleshooting pages provide general steps rather than a full current compatibility list for every phone, country, issuer, and terminal.
If tapping the phone does not start a payment
Work through the checks in order. Each one isolates a different reason the reader might not detect a payment. Retest after each change where practical; if the result changes, that helps identify whether setup, positioning, an accessory, or that particular reader was involved.
1. Turn on NFC and select Samsung Wallet
- Open Settings > Connections > NFC and contactless payments.
- Turn on NFC. If it is already on, turn it off and back on.
- Open the default contactless payment or default wallet setting on that screen and select Samsung Wallet.
- Return to Wallet and try the payment again.
NFC is the phone-to-reader connection used for a contactless tap. If it is switched off, the reader cannot receive a tap from the phone through NFC. If a different service is selected as the default contactless payment service, checking that setting is appropriate before treating the Wallet app as broken. The setting path and wording can differ between devices. Samsung’s instructions are available at NFC is not working properly on a Samsung Galaxy device.
If NFC was already enabled, toggling it off and on is a simple way to recheck the setting before moving to more disruptive steps. Then try a payment again with the phone held close to the reader. If the phone still produces no response, continue with position and interference checks rather than immediately removing cards or resetting the app.
2. Reposition the phone at the reader
Move the phone’s NFC antenna area close to the payment terminal and hold it there briefly. The antenna’s location depends on the device, so try moving the upper or rear portion of the phone slowly across the reader rather than assuming the center of the screen is the contact point. Keep the phone still while the reader attempts to connect.
A small change in where the phone meets the reader can help distinguish a positioning issue from an app or card problem. Try the phone’s antenna area near the terminal’s contactless reader rather than waving the whole phone quickly past it. If the reader responds with an error after contact, that is a different result from no response at all; use the terminal-error guidance below.

3. Remove cases and accessories as a test
Take off the case and any attached accessory, then retry the same payment. Thick, magnetic, metal-containing, or card-holding cases and accessories can interfere with NFC. If the payment works without them, that points to interference from the removed item rather than an app crash. Samsung recommends its approved cases for best results; check compatibility with the exact Galaxy model before choosing a replacement.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteRemoving an accessory is a diagnostic step, not a general fix for every Samsung Wallet failure. If Wallet crashes, the terminal declines the card, or Wallet reports a network error, the case test does not address the symptom. Do not buy a replacement case before testing without the current one. If removing it resolves the tap issue and you want a case, choose one confirmed as compatible with the specific Galaxy model; there is no reason to assume that any case will work equally well with contactless payments.
4. Check whether the reader supports the payment method
A phone cannot make an unsupported terminal accept a mobile payment. Samsung states: “Samsung Wallet will not work with card readers that do not support NFC or MST.” Try a reader that supports NFC or MST before concluding that Wallet itself is broken. A terminal’s contactless symbol can be a useful clue, but if you are unsure about its capabilities, ask the merchant or try another supported reader. See Samsung’s transaction-error guidance.
If Wallet works at another supported reader, the original terminal may be the limiting factor. That result does not prove that every issue is resolved, but it is a useful comparison: the phone’s settings and card were able to proceed at a different reader. Conversely, a single failed attempt at one terminal is not enough to show that the Wallet app itself has failed.
If the terminal shows a decline or transaction error
When a terminal responds and displays a decline, distinguish that from a phone that never triggered the reader. Samsung explains that once payment information has been sent to the terminal, the transaction is between the merchant and the card network. Check the physical card or account for an issuer-side issue, such as insufficient funds, and contact the card issuer if the card is declined. Samsung Wallet support cannot reverse the issuer’s decision or diagnose the account’s status.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The useful question is whether the reader detected the phone and then produced an error. If yes, the transaction has moved beyond the basic “is NFC on?” check. The issuer is the appropriate contact for account status, funds, or issuer restrictions; Samsung cannot make the issuer approve a transaction. If the terminal did not detect the phone at all, return to the NFC, positioning, case, and reader-compatibility checks instead of treating it as an issuer decline.

If you are unsure which occurred, pay attention to where the message appeared. A message displayed by the terminal after it responds to the phone is not the same as Wallet showing “No network connection” or closing unexpectedly. The first points toward the transaction, card, or terminal; the latter messages call for the app or connection steps in this guide. Samsung’s transaction-error instructions are available in its Samsung Pay transaction-error support page.
If Samsung Wallet freezes, will not open, or crashes
Restart before changing Wallet data
Restart the Galaxy phone, then open Wallet again. Samsung’s app-crash guidance says restarting often resolves this type of problem. This is a low-risk first step that does not remove your payment cards. If the app continues to freeze or close after restarting, use Samsung’s steps for Samsung Pay not responding or crashing and contact Samsung support if the problem persists.
Try to establish whether the failure is repeatable: does Wallet fail to open at all, freeze during use, or close unexpectedly? The important first move in Samsung’s guidance is the same—restart the phone and reopen the app. If Wallet then opens and works, there is no need to reset it merely because it had a temporary problem. If the app still fails, continue with the steps Samsung recommends for an app that is not responding or crashes rather than applying a card-decline fix to an app problem.
If only one card is affected
If Wallet works normally except for one card, remove and re-add that card rather than resetting the entire app. Re-adding addresses a card-specific setup problem while avoiding removal of every other payment card. If the card itself is declined at the terminal, however, contact its issuer; changing the Wallet app will not resolve an issuer-side decline.
Use the nature of the failure to choose between those paths. A card that is the only one behaving differently inside Wallet may warrant removing and adding that specific card again. A card that reaches the terminal but is declined is an issuer question. Removing and re-adding a card should not be presented as a way to override an issuer decision or make an unsupported reader accept payment.
Use Reset app only when appropriate
Treat Reset app as a later troubleshooting step, not a first response to a tap failure or a single-card issue. Samsung warns that resetting removes all payment cards from Wallet. Before proceeding, make sure you can add the cards again and are prepared to set them up anew. Do not choose a reset simply to troubleshoot an unsupported reader or a card declined by its issuer.

This is the main consequence to weigh before a reset: it removes every payment card, not just the one that appears to be causing trouble. That makes it a poor first choice for a single-card issue, an NFC setup problem, a network message, or a reader that may not support NFC or MST. Prefer the narrower step that matches the symptom—restart for a crash, remove and re-add the individual card for a card-specific Wallet issue, and contact the issuer for a terminal decline.
If Wallet reports a network problem
For messages such as “No network connection” or “Network problem occurred,” confirm the phone is connected to Wi-Fi or mobile data. If it already appears connected, switch to the other available connection type if practical, then retry. If the message continues, restart the phone to reestablish its connection. These checks address connectivity errors; they do not establish that a terminal, card, or payment account is eligible.
Keep the message itself in view when diagnosing the issue. A Wallet network error is not the same as a terminal decline, and the connection check does not answer whether a specific card or device is supported in your region. If connectivity is available but Wallet continues to report a network problem after a restart, use Samsung support for persistent Wallet app issues. If the terminal instead shows a decline after responding, contact the issuer about the card-side decision.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to contact Samsung or the card issuer
- Contact Samsung for persistent app freezes, crashes, or Wallet setup problems after restarting and trying the relevant app-level steps. Samsung lists Samsung Members and the Wallet contact flow as support routes in its US transaction troubleshooting guidance. Support channels can change, so use Samsung’s current local support page or the in-app route.
- Contact the card issuer when a terminal reports that the card or account is declined, or you need to check funds, account status, or issuer restrictions. Samsung does not control the issuer’s approval decision.
- Ask the merchant or try another reader when the phone is configured but a particular terminal does not respond. The reader may not support NFC or MST.
When you contact support, describe the point where the process stops: whether Wallet opens, whether the phone triggers a response from the reader, whether the terminal displays an error, or whether Wallet shows a network message. This keeps an app issue separate from a terminal compatibility question or an issuer decline and helps you use the right support channel.
Samsung’s US pages provide general troubleshooting, not a complete current list of supported Galaxy models, countries, issuers, or payment terminals. Check Samsung support for your country and confirm card eligibility with the issuer when availability is the question. Samsung’s FAQ about purchases is also US-specific and covers details beyond ordinary in-store tap payments: Frequently asked questions about purchases in Samsung Pay. Menu labels, feature eligibility, and support routes may differ by location and software version.

Why does Samsung Wallet do nothing when I tap my phone?
Check that NFC is on and Samsung Wallet is selected as the default contactless payment service. Toggle NFC off and on, hold the phone’s NFC antenna area close to the reader, and test again without a thick, magnetic, metal-containing, or card-holding case or accessory. If the reader still does not respond, confirm that it supports NFC or MST.

What should I do if a terminal declines my Samsung Wallet payment?
If the terminal responded and displayed a decline, check the card or account and contact the card issuer about funds, account status, or restrictions. Samsung explains that once payment information is sent to the terminal, the transaction is between the merchant and card network. Samsung Wallet cannot reverse the issuer’s decision.
Will resetting Samsung Wallet remove my cards?
Yes. Samsung warns that Reset app removes all payment cards from Wallet. Treat it as a later step, not the first fix for one card, a reader that does not respond, or a card declined by the issuer. For an issue affecting only one card inside Wallet, try removing and re-adding that card instead.
How do I fix Samsung Wallet if it freezes or crashes?
Restart the Galaxy phone and reopen Wallet first. Samsung says restarting often resolves app crashes. If the app continues to freeze or close, follow Samsung’s app-crash guidance and contact Samsung support for persistent app problems.

What does “No network connection” in Samsung Wallet mean?
Confirm the phone is connected to Wi-Fi or mobile data. If the connection appears active, try the other available connection type if practical, then restart the phone if the error continues. A Wallet network message is different from a card decline shown by a payment terminal.
Could the payment terminal be the reason Samsung Wallet is not working?
Yes. Samsung says Wallet will not work with card readers that do not support NFC or MST. Ask the merchant about the reader or try a supported terminal before concluding that Wallet is broken.
Who should I contact for a Samsung Wallet payment problem?
Contact Samsung through Samsung Members or the Wallet contact flow for persistent app freezes, crashes, or setup problems. Contact the card issuer for a terminal decline or account question, and ask the merchant or try another reader if one terminal does not respond. Use Samsung’s current local support information because routes can change.
The Bottom Line
Match the fix to the failure point: check NFC, the default contactless payment service, phone position, accessories, and reader support when a tap gets no response; contact the issuer when the terminal declines a card; restart first when Wallet freezes; and check Wi-Fi or mobile data for a Wallet network error. Reset the app only when narrower steps have not helped, because it removes all payment cards.
