To disconnect a VPN on most Samsung Galaxy phones, open Settings > Connections > More connection settings > VPN, select the active VPN, and turn it off. If it reconnects, check its Always-on VPN setting; if an app manages the VPN, disconnect it in that app instead.
Disconnect a VPN profile in Samsung Settings
- Open Settings.
- Tap Connections, then More connection settings.
- Tap VPN.
- Select the active VPN profile or open its settings, then turn the VPN off.
This is Samsung’s documented route, though menu labels and available controls can vary by Galaxy model, Android version, carrier, and VPN provider. If you do not see the menu, search for “VPN” in Settings. Samsung’s VPN settings instructions and Android Help’s VPN instructions describe the system controls.
Disconnect a VPN managed by an app
If the VPN was set up or is controlled by a provider’s app, open that app and use its disconnect control. Samsung supports VPN access through a provider app as well as VPN settings entered directly on the device. Android Help notes that editing an app-configured VPN may open the app, and the system’s Always-on VPN option may not be available for app-managed connections. Samsung · Android Help

Stop the VPN from reconnecting automatically
In the selected VPN’s settings, look for Always-on VPN and turn it off if it is enabled. Android Help says this setting can be switched on or off. If an always-on VPN stops working, its notification may remain until you reconnect or disable always-on for that VPN. App-managed connections may have different controls.

Turn off versus remove a saved VPN
Turning a VPN off disconnects it while leaving its saved profile available for later. Choose Forget only if you want to remove that saved VPN profile. Android Help distinguishes these actions; forgetting is not necessary for a temporary disconnect. Android Help
Check whether the connection is Samsung Secure Wi-Fi
Secure Wi-Fi is a separate Samsung feature, not simply a standard VPN profile. Open Settings > Security and privacy > Secure Wi-Fi to find its controls. Samsung says availability can vary by phone, country, carrier, or network environment. Its Erase personal data option turns off Secure Wi-Fi by deleting its data, so do not use it as a routine disconnect unless you intend that deletion. See Samsung’s Secure Wi-Fi instructions.

If hotspot sharing is failing
A VPN may need to be disabled as one troubleshooting step when tethering or hotspot sharing does not work. This is not a rule that every VPN prevents hotspot use. Disconnect it using the relevant system or app controls, then try sharing the hotspot again. Samsung includes disabling a VPN as a possible hotspot troubleshooting measure: Samsung hotspot troubleshooting.
