Samsung’s US support guidance lists AVI, FLV, MKV, MP4, 3GP, WebM, and TS as video formats supported on Galaxy phones and tablets. That does not guarantee every file in those containers will play: the codec, file, device, or software version may still cause trouble. If a video will not load, check its format, update the relevant app, and then consider clearing that app’s cache or data using instructions for your device.
Which video formats does Samsung Video Player support?
Samsung’s US support page lists these formats for Galaxy devices: AVI, FLV, MKV, MP4, 3GP, WebM, and TS. The list is useful as a first compatibility check, not a guarantee that every video using one of these containers will work on every Galaxy phone or tablet. An individual file’s encoding and the device or software version can affect playback. Samsung’s support guidance advises that an unsupported format may need to be converted.
What to try when a video will not play
Use Samsung’s troubleshooting sequence as a starting point. Menu names and paths can vary by Galaxy model and software version, so follow the instructions shown for your device and the app you are troubleshooting.
Recommended Free Tools
- Check the format. Compare the file with Samsung’s supported-format list above. If its format is not listed, conversion may be necessary.
- Update the relevant app. Samsung recommends checking for an app update when a supported file still fails to load.
- Clear the app’s cache or data if needed. Samsung includes clearing cache and data among its troubleshooting suggestions. Check your device’s app settings and instructions first: clearing data can remove local information associated with that app.
Samsung’s guidance is general troubleshooting, not a model-by-model chart of player controls or compatibility. If the same file continues to fail after these steps, verify the file itself and consult support information for your specific Galaxy model and software version rather than assuming every device has identical menus or playback behavior.

Are features such as subtitles, speed controls, or picture-in-picture built in?
The available Samsung support guidance does not provide a complete feature list for the built-in player, or establish that a particular control appears on every Galaxy device. Check your player’s menus and your device’s software version before relying on a specific feature.
Third-party apps advertise additional controls, but those claims apply to the named apps, not Samsung Video Player:

These are developer listing claims, not independent verification of performance or compatibility. Before choosing an alternative, check its current listing and confirm it works with your Galaxy model and software version. If a particular capability matters, verify the relevant subtitle formats and controls, playback-speed options, picture-in-picture or casting support, and access to local, network, or cloud files.
