Sometimes. A Samsung video call may use your carrier’s calling service or an internet app such as Google Meet, and the cost depends on the method, your carrier plan, country, and whether you use Wi-Fi or mobile data. An app may not charge per call, but mobile data can still count against your allowance or incur charges.
Which kind of video call are you making?
Galaxy phones may offer a carrier video-call option in the Phone app, Google Meet, or both. The screen and available options vary by device, carrier, and software version. Samsung notes that carrier video calling may not be available on every device or network. Samsung’s video-call guide explains the available routes.
Carrier video call
If you tap a video-call icon in the Phone app, the call may use your carrier’s video-calling service. Whether it is available—and whether it uses minutes, data, or incurs a charge—depends on your carrier, plan, and location. Samsung does not publish one universal price for this feature. If the recipient cannot receive a carrier video call, Samsung suggests using Meet instead.
Google Meet or another app
Samsung documents Google Meet integration on Galaxy devices, including access from the dialer on some unlocked phones and tablets. The interface and availability depend on the model, carrier, and software. Samsung says devices running One UI 5 and later can use Meet video chats with up to 100 participants; that is a stated feature limit, not a guarantee that every device or account has the same options. Samsung’s Meet instructions describe using the app on Galaxy phones and tablets.

Samsung also identifies WhatsApp, Facebook, Skype, and Snapchat as examples of apps that support video calls. An app’s basic call may not have a separate per-call fee, but premium features can require a subscription, and the connection may use mobile data.
Will a video call use mobile data or cost money?
It depends on the connection and call method. An app-based call uses the internet: on mobile data, usage can count against your plan’s data allowance or lead to charges under its terms. On Wi-Fi, the call avoids mobile-data use, but the Wi-Fi connection may itself have a data cap or cost.

Carrier video calling has separate carrier-specific terms. Do not assume it is free simply because the call starts on a Samsung phone, or assume it is billed like a regular voice call. Check with your provider for how your plan treats that specific calling feature.
Wi-Fi Calling is not the same as an app video call
Wi-Fi Calling is a carrier feature for regular phone calls and messages over Wi-Fi; it is not the same thing as placing a video call through Meet or another internet app. Samsung says it requires an active SIM and support from your network provider. Its regional guidance also distinguishes app-based VoIP data use from carrier calling: for example, Singapore guidance describes Wi-Fi Calling in relation to local carrier talk-time or minutes. That billing distinction is specific to the provider and region, not a universal rule. Samsung Ireland’s Wi-Fi Calling guidance lists its activation requirements.

How to check what your call will use
- Identify the option. Check whether you are selecting a carrier video-call icon in the Phone app or opening Meet or another app. The labels and icons can differ by device and software.
- Check the connection. Confirm whether the phone is using Wi-Fi or mobile data. For an app call over mobile data, review your data allowance and any out-of-plan charges.
- Confirm carrier terms. Ask your provider whether carrier video calls are available on your plan and how they are billed in your country. Ask separately about Wi-Fi Calling if that is what you plan to use.
Samsung’s support information explains the options but does not establish the charge for a particular carrier, plan, or country. Your provider’s current terms are the source for the exact cost.
