If your Samsung TV screen is black, press Home or Menu on the remote first. If the TV’s menu appears, check the selected input, connected device, and cables. If the menu does not appear, treat it as a possible TV power or display problem—not simply an HDMI issue—and follow Samsung’s power checks or contact support.
Start by checking whether the TV menu appears
Press Home or Menu on the Samsung remote. This separates two useful troubleshooting paths:
- The menu appears: The TV can display its interface, so check the selected source and the signal coming from the connected device.
- The menu does not appear: The issue may involve TV power or the TV itself. Do not assume an external HDMI device is responsible; use Samsung’s separate power troubleshooting or contact support.
Samsung’s guide, “Samsung TV has no picture or a black screen”, recommends this as an initial check.
If the menu appears, check the input and connected device
Match the TV input to the device’s port
Make sure the TV is set to the same input where the source device is connected. For example, a device plugged into HDMI 1 requires the TV to be set to HDMI 1. Also confirm that the device itself is turned on.

Reconnect and inspect the cables
Disconnect and reconnect each cable at both ends, working one cable at a time. Look for visible damage and replace any damaged cable. Once you have reconnected the external device, turn it off and back on.
Use the HDMI cable test only if your model supports it
Some Samsung TVs offer an on-TV HDMI cable test, but it is not available on every model and may require a software update before it appears. Samsung describes the test as suitable for short cables; results may be inaccurate with longer cables. If the test reports a bad cable, replace it. Samsung says that result does not require TV service.

A replacement HDMI cable is useful only as a way to isolate a suspected cable fault. Choose one that meets the resolution and refresh-rate requirements of your connected devices; a new cable will not fix a TV that cannot display its own menu.

Try another TV input, cable, or external device. If a different combination displays a picture, the original TV-and-source setup was not the only factor; keep swapping components individually to identify whether the problem follows a particular device, cable, or port.

If your TV uses a One Connect Box
Samsung provides a separate troubleshooting path for TVs that use a One Connect Box. Follow the instructions for your specific model rather than applying steps for a TV without the box as if they were universal. Samsung’s black-screen troubleshooting guide covers models with and without One Connect Box.
Try a cold boot if the TV remains accessible
A cold boot can address some software or menu glitches. If Samsung’s instructions indicate it is appropriate and the TV is accessible, hold the remote’s Power button until the TV turns off and on again. If you do not have the remote, unplug the TV for 30 seconds, then reconnect it. Samsung also notes cold booting can help with some picture issues in its cold-boot instructions.

Update the software only when the TV is usable
If the TV displays menus and can be operated reliably, Samsung’s picture troubleshooting guide recommends checking for a software update. The menu path depends on the model year:

Do not turn off the TV during an update. Samsung warns that video and audio settings may return to their defaults afterward. If the screen is inaccessible or the TV’s power is uncertain, do not make an update the first step. See Samsung’s picture troubleshooting instructions for these update paths.

When to request service
If the menu does not appear, or the picture remains absent after checking the input, device, cables, and applicable model-specific steps, contact Samsung Support. Samsung’s guidance for an unresolved black screen is: “If there’s still no picture on your TV, visit our Support Center to request service.”
