Samsung TTS is the text-to-speech engine that lets supported Galaxy apps and accessibility features speak text aloud. It is not a screen reader you need to install: TalkBack is the screen-reading service, and it uses the device’s text-to-speech system to speak screen content while helping users navigate.
What Samsung TTS does—and what it does not do
Text-to-speech (TTS) converts text into spoken audio. On a Galaxy phone or tablet, apps can use the device’s built-in TTS functions to speak text instead of, or alongside, displaying it. Samsung gives in-game chat and navigation as examples of where spoken text may be useful. Whether a particular app offers read-aloud features depends on that app.
Samsung’s US support page puts the distinction plainly: “Text to speech is not the Accessibility screen reader.” TalkBack is the screen-reading accessibility service; it uses the same built-in TTS system but is intended to assist people with visual impairments. A screen reader announces and helps navigate screen content and controls, rather than simply speaking a selected string of text. Samsung’s One UI developer guidance also describes screen reading as including text and images, with alternative text needed to provide audible feedback for images without text.
How to find and change TTS settings
For Samsung’s US support workflow, open Settings > General management > Text-to-speech. The exact menu labels and availability can vary by Galaxy model, software version, and region. If you do not see that route, search Settings for Text-to-speech.

- Open Settings and go to General management > Text-to-speech.
- Under Preferred engine, select an engine offered on your device.
- Choose the available language, then adjust Speech rate and Pitch to suit your preference.
- Tap Play to hear a sample using the selected rate and pitch. Use Reset if you want the rate and pitch returned to their defaults.
Samsung says its engine and Google’s engine may offer different voices and languages. Android’s available engine choices vary by device and may include the manufacturer’s engine, Google’s, and third-party engines downloaded from Google Play. Your phone or tablet’s actual list—not a universal set of options—determines what you can select.
How to download voice data
A language or voice may not appear until its data is installed. In Samsung’s US workflow, open the settings icon beside Preferred engine, choose Install voice data, and download the voice data you want. Samsung notes that the language selector includes only installed languages. Google’s Android help also describes installing voice data for another language.

After downloading, return to the TTS settings, select the engine and language you want, and use the sample playback to check the result. The available voices depend on the selected engine and the data installed on your device.
Samsung TTS and Google’s engine: how to choose
Where both engines are available, compare the voices and languages listed on your own device. Use sample playback to judge which voice and settings you prefer. Samsung says the engines may provide different voices and languages, while Google notes that default engine choices vary by device. The cited documentation does not establish that either engine is objectively more natural, faster, or higher quality.

Why your menus may look different
Samsung’s US instructions place TTS under General management. Samsung India documents a different route involving Apps and Bixby Vision, and also describes a TalkBack example for selecting text in an app and hearing it aloud. These are regional or device-specific instructions, not a single path guaranteed across all Galaxy devices. The India support page was last updated February 5, 2026.
Samsung’s Galaxy Store also has a listing named Samsung TTS (Text-to-speech), but its presence does not mean every user must install a standalone app to enable TTS. Availability of that listing can differ by region and device. Start with the TTS settings already offered on your device, and search Settings if the documented path does not match.

- Check the preferred engine. Confirm that the engine you intend to use is selected.
- Check the language and voice data. Install the needed voice data from the engine’s settings, then select an installed language.
- Test with sample playback. Use Play in Text-to-speech settings to confirm that the selected voice and speech settings produce audio.
- Check the app’s read-aloud feature. TTS provides the speech synthesis; an app must support the relevant interaction for its text to be spoken.
