If your Samsung tablet screen goes black after a pause, the most likely cause is Screen timeout, which turns off the display after inactivity to save power. If it goes black while you are looking at it, check the viewing-detection setting and any case-related screen controls. If the picture remains visible but gets darker, check Adaptive brightness instead.
First, tell whether the screen is off or just dim
When the display changes, check whether the image disappears completely or remains visible at a lower brightness. These are different behaviors: Screen timeout turns the display off after inactivity, while Adaptive brightness adjusts brightness in response to lighting. Samsung describes them as separate settings and troubleshooting paths (Samsung US Support).
- The screen goes black after you stop interacting: Check Screen timeout.
- The screen goes black while you are looking at it: Check viewing detection and, if relevant, case or accessory behavior.
- The image stays visible but gets darker: Check Adaptive brightness and brightness controls.
If it goes black after a pause, change Screen timeout
Screen timeout is a normal power-saving feature, not by itself evidence of a fault. Samsung US Support lists timeout options from 15 seconds to 10 minutes; the choices available can vary by model, region, and software version. Samsung’s separate US dimming guidance gives 30 seconds as a default, but that should not be assumed for every Galaxy tablet (timeout options; default example).

- Open Settings.
- Search Settings for Screen timeout. Where the menu is available, the common path is Settings > Display > Screen timeout.
- Choose a longer interval from the options shown on your tablet.
A longer interval keeps the display on longer when you are not interacting with it, but uses more battery. Samsung Canada gives the same 15-second-to-10-minute range for Galaxy devices sold in Canada; its support page, last updated October 25, 2025, notes that settings and screens may vary by model and country (Samsung Canada Support).

If it goes black while you are looking at it
Search Settings for Keep screen on while viewing. If your tablet offers the setting, turn it on and see whether the display stays on when you are watching it. Samsung says the feature uses the front camera to detect whether someone is looking at the screen. It may be called Smart stay on older software, and it is not available on every device or software version (Samsung US Support; Samsung Canada Support).
Detection can be less reliable in low light or when the camera cannot clearly see your face. If the option is absent, your model or software may not support it.

If a cover or accessory may be triggering the screen
Some Samsung devices show an Auto screen on and off setting for certain cases or accessories. If the tablet’s behavior seems to coincide with opening, closing, or moving a cover, look under Settings > Advanced features > Accessories. If the setting appears, turn it off temporarily as a diagnostic step and observe whether the behavior changes. Samsung says this option is only available with certain cases or accessories (Samsung US Support).

Check Adaptive brightness, which changes screen brightness according to ambient lighting. Adjust brightness or disable Adaptive brightness temporarily to see whether the change stops. This setting affects how bright the image looks; it is not the same as Screen timeout, which turns the display off (Samsung US Support).

When to contact Samsung Support
If the screen still turns off unexpectedly after checking timeout, viewing detection, and any relevant accessory setting, contact Samsung Support for help with the specific tablet. The support guidance cited here identifies settings and accessory behavior to check; it does not establish that an individual tablet has a failed screen or battery.
