If your Samsung tablet is frozen and will not respond, hold the Power/Side button and Volume down together to force a restart. If it is only showing a normal lock screen and still responds, that restart shortcut is not an unlock method, and Samsung’s cited instructions do not confirm a way to power it fully off using buttons alone without interacting with the screen.
First identify what “locked” means
A tablet at its ordinary lock screen is different from one whose screen or controls have frozen. Samsung’s button-combination guidance is for a Galaxy tablet that is unresponsive; it should not be treated as a way to bypass the PIN, password, or other screen lock. The exact options can vary by model and software.
- Locked but responsive: Use the on-screen power menu if you can access it. Menu access varies, and Samsung’s cited troubleshooting does not establish a button-only way to fully shut down a responsive tablet from its lock screen.
- Frozen or unresponsive: Try the forced restart steps below.
- Will not power on: A depleted battery or hardware problem may be involved; follow the charging and service steps below rather than treating it as a lock-screen issue.
Force-restart an unresponsive Galaxy tablet
- Press and hold Power/Side and Volume down together. Samsung US says the hold may take up to 60 seconds. The device may restart rather than remain powered off. Samsung US troubleshooting
- If Maintenance Boot Mode appears, select Normal Boot. Use the volume keys to highlight Normal Boot, then press Power or Bixby to select it. Samsung US troubleshooting
- If the tablet remains frozen, try Samsung UK’s fallback. Hold Power and Volume down for more than seven seconds to restart. If that fails, hold Power for up to two minutes to shut down. Once it switches off, leave it off for one minute, then press Power to turn it on. These are Samsung UK’s instructions for a frozen Galaxy Tab, and button behavior can vary by model. What to expect after restarting
A forced restart does not clear the screen lock. If you use biometric security, Samsung notes that you may need to enter your backup PIN or password after restarting. Keep that credential available; the restart is a recovery step for an unresponsive device, not a security bypass. Samsung US troubleshooting

Check for blocked buttons
Remove the case only if it may be stopping the Power/Side or Volume down button from being pressed. If the tablet still will not respond or turn off, Samsung recommends service for continued failure. Contact Samsung Support or a service center. Samsung US troubleshooting

Consider a depleted battery
Samsung UK suggests letting the battery run out, then charging the tablet for 30 minutes and trying again. Charging is a fallback for a device that may be out of power, not a way to unlock it. When a forced restart is not the answer
If the tablet is responsive at its lock screen, use the on-screen power controls if available; the cited instructions do not establish that a button combination will fully turn off a responsive locked tablet. If the interface is frozen, use the forced restart procedure instead. If it remains unresponsive after the steps above, contact Samsung Support or a service center. The available manufacturer guidance does not call for a factory reset as the first response.
