To factory reset a Samsung tablet, open Settings > General management > Reset > Factory data reset, review the information shown, then confirm using the on-screen prompts. A factory data reset erases personal data and downloaded apps, so back up anything you want to keep and make sure you can access the Samsung and Google accounts previously used on the tablet. Menu names and locations vary by model and software version.
Choose the right kind of reset
A temporary problem usually calls for a restart, not a wipe. If you want to undo changed preferences but keep your content, consider Reset all settings. Choose Factory data reset when you intend to erase personal data or return the tablet to its factory state.

Samsung distinguishes a restart and settings-only reset from a factory data reset in its Galaxy reset guidance.
Prepare before erasing the tablet
- Back up what you need. Samsung describes backup options involving Samsung or Google accounts and Smart Switch. Check that the items you care about are included; do not assume every app’s private data or an SD card is covered. Samsung warns that information may not be recoverable after a reset. Its tablet-specific reset guidance says factory resetting is not reversible.
- Check account access. Know the passwords for the Samsung account and Google account previously used on the device. The reset or setup process may ask for credentials, and Google Factory Reset Protection (FRP) can require verification of an account previously registered on the tablet after certain reset methods.
- Decrypt an encrypted microSD card, if you use one. Samsung US says an encrypted card should be decrypted before resetting; otherwise, the device may not be able to read it afterward. This applies only if the tablet has an encrypted card.
- If handing the tablet to someone else, remove your account first. Follow Samsung’s instructions for removing the owner’s account before transfer to reduce account-verification problems for the next user. A reset does not remove ownership protections.

Factory reset from Settings
- Open Settings.
- Tap General management, then Reset.
- Choose Factory data reset and read the data summary on screen.
- Tap Reset, then confirm with Delete all if that option appears. Follow any prompts for the screen lock or Samsung account password.
- Wait for the tablet to restart and display the initial setup screen.
If the menu path differs, search within Settings for Factory data reset and open the matching result. Samsung notes that menu labels and locations can differ by model and software version. Its Galaxy tablet instructions also describe the Settings workflow. Samsung France’s current example shows Android 15 and One UI 7 screens from a Galaxy S24+, so treat those screens as an illustration of Samsung terminology—not a guarantee that every tablet looks the same: Samsung France reset instructions.
If you cannot open Settings
Use recovery mode only with model-specific instructions
Samsung documents a hardware-button reset for tablets that cannot be reset through Settings, but the button sequence depends on the model. Consult the support page or manual for your exact tablet before trying it. In Samsung’s described recovery procedure, volume buttons move through the menu to Wipe data/factory reset, and the power button confirms the selection. A recovery reset can still trigger account verification afterward; it is not a way to bypass FRP.

Consider remote erase only if it was already set up
Samsung’s UK SmartThings Find instructions require the tablet to be online, signed in to a Samsung account, and configured with remote control and remote unlock enabled. If those conditions were not met—or the tablet is offline—remote erasure may not be available. Remote control ends after an erase. Use Samsung support or Google account recovery if you cannot verify an account. A factory reset does not remove the requirement to prove access to an account associated with the tablet; do not use lock- or FRP-bypass methods.

What to expect after the wipe
The tablet restarts to its initial setup. Depending on how it was reset and which accounts were previously on it, setup may ask for Google account verification and may also request Samsung account credentials. Have the relevant account access ready before starting so you can complete setup legitimately.
