The Samsung Portable SSD T9 is a strong choice if your computer supports USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 and you want a rugged drive with high advertised transfer speeds. Samsung lists sequential reads of up to 2,000 MB/s, but that maximum depends on the connected device and workload. If your host cannot use the T9’s 20Gbps interface—or you do not need its speed—TechRadar identifies the Samsung T7 as an alternative to consider.
What the Samsung T9 offers
The T9 is an external solid-state drive available in 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB capacities. Its specified connection is USB 3.2 Gen 2×2, a 20Gbps interface. Samsung advertises sequential read speeds of up to 2,000 MB/s. These are manufacturer specifications, not a promise that every computer or file transfer will reach those figures.

These capacity-specific maximums come from Samsung’s 2023 product announcement. They describe sequential performance, not every kind of task. Small-file transfers, the source and destination drives, the host device, and the workload can affect actual results.

Only if the host connection supports USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 and the rest of the transfer setup can keep up. A USB connector’s shape alone does not establish that support: check the computer or port specifications for the interface name and 20Gbps capability. On a slower connection, the T9 may still connect, but you should not expect its advertised maximum.

Samsung lists Windows, macOS, and Android compatibility in its announcement. Its U.S. product page also names PCs, laptops, Android phones and tablets, game consoles, smart TVs, and cameras. Compatibility does not guarantee that every device will use the drive at full speed or accept it for every purpose. For a particular phone, camera, console, or TV, check the device maker’s requirements, supported storage format, and available connection before buying.
How durable is the T9?
Samsung lists drop resistance up to 3 meters and a five-year limited warranty. Treat the drop figure as a manufacturer specification, not a guarantee that the drive will survive every fall, surface, angle, or impact. The warranty is limited; check the terms that apply in your region for coverage details.

Should you choose the T9 or the T7?
TechRadar reports that the T9 came close to the theoretical limits of its USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 interface in its benchmark suite and recommends it as a top portable SSD. That is TechRadar’s test-based assessment, not an independent test conducted here or a guarantee for your computer. The same publication points buyers who do not need the T9’s speed toward the T7.

Which T9 capacity should you buy?
- 1TB: Choose it if it fits the amount of data you plan to carry; Samsung lists up to 1,950 MB/s sequential writes.
- 2TB: A middle capacity, with the same published maximum sequential write speed as the 1TB model.
- 4TB: The largest listed option; Samsung publishes up to 2,000 MB/s sequential writes for this capacity.
Capacity and speed are separate considerations: select enough space for your files, then check whether your host can take advantage of the interface.
