To connect a Samsung HW-T400 soundbar to a TV, use an optical audio cable if the TV has an optical output, or pair the soundbar over Bluetooth if the TV supports compatible Bluetooth audio. Optical is the documented wired option; Bluetooth availability for TV connections is limited to select Samsung TVs. The HW-T400 does not have a documented HDMI soundbar connection in the cited specifications, so use one of these two methods.

Choose optical or Bluetooth

Connection What you need Why choose it Limitation
Optical A TV optical audio output and a TOSLINK optical cable A wired connection documented for the HW-T400 The cable is not supplied; check the TV output and audio-format setting. Samsung’s HW-T400 support page lists the model’s documentation.
Bluetooth A TV with compatible Bluetooth audio support No signal cable between TV and soundbar Samsung specifies TV Bluetooth connection on select Samsung TVs only, and the soundbar connects to just one TV or Bluetooth device at a time. See the HW-T400 support page for model documentation.

Before choosing Bluetooth, check your TV’s manual or specifications for Bluetooth audio output. Bluetooth being available for headphones or accessories does not by itself establish that the TV can send sound to a soundbar.

Connect the HW-T400 with an optical cable

  1. Check the TV’s ports. Look for an optical audio output. Do not buy a cable until you confirm the TV has one.
  2. Connect the cable. Plug one end into the TV’s optical audio output and the other into the soundbar port marked DIGITAL AUDIO IN (OPTICAL). Samsung’s manual labels the cable “Optical Cable (not supplied).”
  3. Set the TV’s sound output. In the TV audio settings, choose the external or optical audio output. Menu names and navigation differ by TV model, so use the TV’s manual if you cannot find the setting.
  4. Select the soundbar’s optical input if needed. If the TV is set to optical but you hear no sound, make sure the HW-T400 is using its optical source.

Set the digital audio format if there is no sound

For Dolby Digital-encoded broadcast audio, Samsung recommends changing the TV’s digital output from PCM to Dolby Digital. TV manufacturers may use different labels for these options, so check the TV’s audio-format settings and manual. This recommendation applies to Dolby Digital-encoded audio; it is not a general requirement for every program or source.

Pair the soundbar with the TV over Bluetooth

  1. Put the soundbar in pairing mode. Switch its source to Bluetooth Pairing.
  2. Open the TV’s Bluetooth audio menu. Find the option for adding or selecting a Bluetooth audio device, following the TV’s manual if the menu is unclear.
  3. Select the soundbar. The TV may list it as [AV] Samsung Soundbar T400 T-Series.
  4. Confirm the connection. Samsung’s manual says, “The blue LED should not be blinking once the Bluetooth connection is complete.”

If Bluetooth pairing fails

  • Check that the soundbar is in Bluetooth Pairing, rather than merely set to Bluetooth.
  • If the TV shows an old soundbar entry, delete that entry and repeat pairing.
  • Disconnect another TV or Bluetooth device first. The HW-T400 supports only one connected TV or Bluetooth device at a time.
  • If the TV cannot find the soundbar or will not connect, confirm that the TV supports Bluetooth audio output; Samsung qualifies this TV-connection feature as available only on select Samsung TVs.

Can the TV remote control the HW-T400?

Some Samsung TV remotes can control the soundbar, but this is not universal. Samsung’s manual specifies 2017-and-later Samsung Smart TVs that support Bluetooth when the HW-T400 is connected using an optical cable. That qualification does not establish remote-control compatibility for every Samsung TV, other TV brands, or every connection setup.

Which connection should you use?

  • Choose optical if your TV has an optical output and you want the documented wired TV connection.
  • Choose Bluetooth if your TV supports Bluetooth audio and avoiding a cable matters more than a wired link.
  • If neither option works, check the TV’s available audio outputs and compatibility information rather than assuming an HDMI adapter or HDMI ARC/eARC connection is supported by the HW-T400.
