US investors seeking direct ownership of Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. generally need a broker that offers access to South Korea’s Korea Exchange (KRX). Samsung lists its common shares there as 005930 and preferred shares as 005935. Its London-listed depositary receipts are not a workaround: Samsung says US residents are prohibited from trading them. A US-registered fund may offer indirect exposure instead.
First, identify which “Samsung stock” you mean
This guide is about Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., the company behind the KRX-listed shares and London-listed global depositary receipts (GDRs). The Samsung name is used by multiple companies and securities, so confirm the issuer shown in your broker’s instrument details before placing an order.
Samsung’s listing information identifies the original common share as KRX symbol 005930 and the preferred share as 005935. It lists the common GDR in London as SMSN and the preferred GDR as SMSEL. Samsung’s listing information is the primary reference for these symbols.

Which routes can a US investor investigate?

Why the London GDRs are not a simple shortcut
Samsung’s investor guide states: “Individuals are prohibited from trading GDRs in accordance with Rule 144A of the US Securities Exchange Act.” The guide also includes securities-law caveats for US persons. Treat this as Samsung’s stated guidance, not as a substitute for advice about a particular investor or transaction. A broker listing a London symbol does not establish that a US resident may trade it. How to investigate direct KRX access
- Confirm the issuer. Check that the instrument is Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., not another Samsung-affiliated issuer.
- Choose direct or indirect exposure. If you require direct share ownership, look for KRX common 005930 or preferred 005935. If a fund’s pooled exposure is acceptable, assess its objective and current holdings rather than assuming it owns a particular amount of Samsung.
- Ask a broker about KRX access for your account. Interactive Brokers announced KRX equity access on May 7, 2026, and named Samsung Electronics among the listed companies. That announcement is a lead to investigate, not a guarantee of access for every US account, security, or order type. Check the broker’s current disclosures and permissions. Read the announcement.
- Check the full transaction terms before funding or ordering. Confirm account eligibility, market permissions, symbol and order availability, trading hours, settlement, foreign-exchange conversion, commissions, minimums, custody and other fees, dividend handling, and tax reporting.
- Review the intermediary. Investor.gov recommends checking investment professionals’ registration. It also cautions that working directly with a foreign broker not registered in the US may not provide the same protections as using a US-registered broker. Consult Investor.gov’s international investing guidance and use official US registration resources.
Costs and risks that can differ from US-listed shares
Buying an overseas-listed share can expose you to more than the share price. Investor.gov notes that international investing may involve higher costs, currency effects, differing information availability, varying liquidity, different market operations, and limits on US legal remedies. Political, economic, or social conditions may also affect foreign investments.
- Currency: KRX shares trade in Korean won, so exchange-rate changes can raise or reduce the value measured in US dollars. Investor.gov explains that a change in the dollar’s exchange rate against an international investment’s currency can increase or reduce investment return.
- Trading and liquidity: Korean market hours and trading practices differ from US market hours and procedures. Liquidity can vary, and a broker may limit available order types or access.
- Information: Some company or market information may not be available in English or may not follow the same disclosure practices familiar to US investors.
- Costs and protections: Compare explicit brokerage and custody charges as well as currency-conversion costs. Legal remedies and investor protections may differ across jurisdictions.
These are general international-investing considerations; the actual terms depend on the security, intermediary, and investor’s circumstances. Verify details with the broker before acting.

What not to assume about access procedures
Older descriptions of Korean-market access may refer to registration documents or account minimums. Do not treat those examples as current, universal requirements for a US investor. Account-opening procedures and eligible documentation can change, and access arranged through a US broker may follow different steps. Use the broker’s current instructions for your specific account and market.
