The Samsung SRL458ELS is a discontinued 458L bottom-mount refrigerator, so it makes sense to consider it as a particular used or leftover-stock unit—not as a current mainstream recommendation. CHOICE’s public listing reports a 4-star energy rating and claimed use of 330 kWh per year, but its detailed performance scores are restricted to members. The practical decision depends on the unit’s condition, price, coverage and repair options.
What the SRL458ELS is
Samsung Australia identifies the SRL458ELS as a 458L bottom-mount refrigerator. CHOICE categorizes it as a freezer-on-bottom model in its large 451–525L class. The nominal capacity tells you the model’s size category, but not whether its shelf spacing, bins and drawers will suit the containers you use or fit your kitchen.
Samsung’s Australia support page for the SRL458ELS lists a model-specific English user manual (DA68-02676A-18_EN.pdf, version 18, modified 20 July 2021). Its indexed topics include setup and leveling, reversing the door, the control panel, ice making and the foldable shelf. Use the Samsung-hosted manual for instructions, especially before changing the door swing or installing the refrigerator.

CHOICE labels the model discontinued. Its public listing does not reveal the Expert Rating or detailed results for food freshness, temperature stability, evenness and range, performance in different outside temperatures, default settings or heat load. Those scores should not be inferred from the headline specifications.

What owners report
Public owner posts are mixed. Some describe quiet operation, a useful freezer, consistent temperatures, the foldable shelf’s flexibility or perceived low energy use; some report satisfactory operation over several years. Other posts describe poor cooling or compressor trouble, display failures, rust or dents, damaged hinges or shelf supports, drawer problems, condensation and frustration with service.
These are self-selected accounts with differing dates, unit ages and circumstances. They illustrate experiences people have reported, but do not establish how common a problem is, what caused it, or how long an SRL458ELS should last. General Samsung support topics about cooling problems or warm side walls likewise do not prove an SRL458ELS-specific fault.

How to assess a particular unit before buying
Inspect and verify the refrigerator you would actually receive. If possible, see it running and check the following:

- Cooling: Confirm the fridge and freezer are cooling as expected rather than relying on a seller’s assurance. If temperatures seem wrong, postpone the purchase until the cause and repair cost are clear.
- Doors and seals: Check that doors close evenly, seals are intact, hinges are sound and the doors align.
- Shelves and drawers: Operate the drawers and inspect shelf supports, the foldable shelf and other components for cracks, damage or missing pieces.
- Interior and exterior: Look for condensation inside, rust, dents and signs of water or impact damage.
- Controls and sound: Check that the temperature display and controls work; listen for unusual or concerning noise while the unit runs.
- Paperwork and support: Ask for purchase documentation and written confirmation of any remaining or transferable warranty. Verify repair access and parts availability for this specific model before treating a repair as straightforward.
For a used unit, factor transport and installation into the price, along with the possibility of repair costs. For leftover stock, get the seller’s warranty terms in writing rather than assuming the two-year figure on CHOICE’s listing applies. No current price or market comparison is established here.

Fit, energy and price: what to compare
Compare this refrigerator with the actual alternatives available to you, rather than relying on capacity or the old energy claim alone. Check whether the usable layout works for your groceries, whether the appliance fits the kitchen and delivery path, and whether its door can open as needed. Consult the Samsung model support page for manual-based installation and door-reversal guidance, then verify the measurements for your space.
When comparing energy figures, use the same kind of label or test data and account for the year and geography. The 330 kWh/year figure is CHOICE’s listed claim for this model; this article does not independently verify consumption. Weigh the unit’s condition, seller terms, delivery and likely repairs against a newer alternative’s price and coverage. There is not enough model-to-model evidence here for a scored head-to-head verdict.
