The “D” in a Samsung soundbar code such as HW-Q990D is a model suffix associated with the model’s year or generation—not the name of an audio feature. Samsung identifies the HW-Q990D as a 2024 model. To find out what a soundbar actually supports, check the specifications for its complete model code.
Is D a feature on Samsung soundbars?
No. In the cited Samsung examples, D appears at the end of the model code as a year or generation marker. It does not, on its own, tell you whether the soundbar supports Dolby Atmos, has rear speakers, includes HDMI inputs, or uses a particular channel configuration.
Samsung’s Netherlands product page identifies the HW-Q990D as a 2024 Q-series soundbar and lists features including wireless Dolby Atmos, 11.1.4-channel sound, Q-Symphony, and SpaceFit Sound Pro. Those are specifications for the HW-Q990D—not meanings of the letter D. Samsung’s HW-Q990D product page

For the documented models, D indicates a model-year or generation distinction associated with Samsung’s 2024 soundbar lineup. Samsung Australia’s 2024 promotion terms list D-suffix examples including HW-Q990D, HW-Q930D, HW-Q800D, HW-Q700D, HW-S800D, and HW-S801D. This evidence supports interpreting D as a suffix in the cited examples; it does not establish a universal Samsung codebook for every soundbar family, region, or year. Don’t use the suffix alone to infer a model’s age or capabilities beyond what Samsung states for that exact product.
Why you need the full model code to check features
Soundbars sharing a D suffix can have different configurations. For example, Samsung Australia’s specification document for the HW-S800D/XY lists a 3.1.2-channel design, ten speakers, a wireless subwoofer, and eARC. When comparing models, use the full code and check the specifications for the region where the soundbar is sold. Look specifically for:
- Channel configuration and speaker count
- Whether a subwoofer or rear speakers are included
- Supported audio formats and features
- HDMI connections and eARC support

Use that complete code when searching Samsung’s regional product page or manual. A code such as HW-Q990D identifies a specific model; the final letter alone is not enough to establish its feature set.
