Choose based on your phone first. Samsung Galaxy SmartTag2 is the clear fit for someone who uses a compatible Samsung Galaxy phone and wants SmartThings Find, UWB-assisted close finding, and a replaceable battery. Tile is the alternative to investigate when you do not want to be tied to Samsung, but its exact model, phone support, battery design, and service terms must be checked on the current product page for your country. The two products do not share one finding network, and a Bluetooth range figure is not the same thing as a guarantee that a lost item will be recovered.

The short answer

There is no universal winner. SmartTag2 is the more straightforward recommendation for a Samsung Galaxy owner because Samsung specifies the phone, account, app, and SmartThings Find requirements and documents the tag’s UWB capability. A reader with another phone should not buy it on the assumption that every feature will work. Investigate the exact current Tile model instead, and confirm its supported operating systems, battery arrangement, range specification, and any paid-service conditions before ordering.

Why your phone ecosystem matters

A Bluetooth tracker has two separate jobs. Nearby, it establishes a direct Bluetooth connection with your phone so an app can show that the tag is close, play a sound, or guide you toward it. When the tag is outside your phone’s direct connection, recovery depends on the tracker’s finding service and other participating devices detecting the tag and reporting its location. Those are different systems, so a nominal Bluetooth distance cannot predict the chance of finding an item left across town.

SmartTag2’s Samsung requirements

Samsung’s current U.S. product listing requires a compatible Galaxy device, a Samsung account, the relevant app, and registration in SmartThings Find. The supported-device list and footnotes can change, so check them immediately before purchase. UWB functions require a Galaxy phone with UWB hardware; owning a SmartTag2 alone does not add UWB to a phone that lacks it.

Tile requires a model check

The available Tile/Life360 compliance records identify Mate model T1801A and Pro model T1701N. Those documents establish model identifiers, not a complete current retail catalog or proof that every model remains available in every country. Do not infer one Tile model’s operating-system support, battery, dimensions, water rating, or subscription terms from another. Use the live listing for the exact model and region.

What SmartTag2 actually offers

Specification or feature What Samsung states How to interpret it
Wireless technologies Bluetooth Low Energy 5.3 and Ultra-Wideband BLE handles ordinary proximity; UWB-assisted precision requires a compatible Galaxy phone
Bluetooth distance Up to 120 m A manufacturer maximum under stated test conditions, not a guaranteed connection through walls or in every environment
Battery Replaceable CR2032 You can replace the coin cell instead of discarding the tag when the battery is exhausted
Battery life Up to 500 days in typical usage An estimate; frequent alerts, temperature, radio conditions, and use patterns can change actual life
Ingress protection IP67 Resistance to dust and temporary water immersion under the rating’s test conditions; not a promise of protection in every situation
Finding software SmartThings Find Registration and a Samsung account are part of the setup requirement
Close-finding extras UWB-assisted precision and AR-assisted finding are described by Samsung Availability depends on the phone model, software, permissions, and environment

Samsung’s Mobile Press announcement describes BLE, UWB, AR-assisted finding, and SmartThings Find registration. Treat the current regional product page as the authority for live compatibility and specifications because announcement material can remain online after product requirements change.

What is—and is not—established about Tile

Tile is the broader-platform alternative described in a Tom’s Guide comparison dated April 16, 2026. That description is useful for the ecosystem decision, but the review’s range and alarm observations are hands-on results under its own conditions, not guarantees for every Tile model, phone, building, or software version.

Samsung SmartTag2 (2023) Bluetooth + UWB, IP67 Water and Dust Resistant, Findable via App, 1.5 Year Battery Life - Black (International Version)
  • Find your things with ease: The SmartThings Find app uses Bluetooth and ultra-wideband (UWB) technology to locate and keep track of your stuff
  • Water and Dust Resistant: IP67 rating offers protection against dust and water immersion between 15 cm and 1 meter for up to 30 minutes
  • Compatible with Galaxy Devices Only.

The currently available compliance documents identify Mate T1801A and Pro T1701N. They do not establish a complete lineup, current generation names, regional stock, exact phone-version support, battery life, battery replaceability, water rating, service requirements, or network reach. Those unknowns matter more than a familiar model name when you are deciding what to buy.

Questions to answer on a Tile product page

  • Which exact model and generation is being sold in your country?
  • Does its app support your current iPhone or Android version?
  • Is the battery replaceable, and which battery does the manufacturer specify?
  • What local Bluetooth range is published, and under what test conditions?
  • Are any finding, sharing, alert, or history features tied to a subscription?
  • What water, dust, dimensions, attachment, and warranty details apply to that model?

How the finding experience differs

Finding an item nearby

For either product, the phone must be close enough to communicate with the tag. Walls, vehicles, metal objects, radio interference, and the tag’s orientation can reduce practical distance. Samsung’s “up to 120 m” figure is therefore best treated as a ceiling from a controlled specification, not as a room-to-room promise.

SmartTag2 adds UWB-assisted precision on a supported Galaxy phone. UWB can provide directional and distance information for close finding, while AR-assisted views are intended to help identify the item’s position. The phone must contain the required UWB hardware, and the app must have the permissions needed for the feature.

SAMSUNG SmartTag2 (2023) Bluetooth + UWB, IP67 Water and Dust Resistant, Findable via App, 1.5 Year Battery Life - White

For Tile, do not assume that a model offers the same close-finding method as SmartTag2. Confirm the feature on the exact current listing and check whether your phone supports it.

Finding an item that is out of Bluetooth range

Once the tag is no longer directly connected to your phone, the app’s finding network becomes the important factor. A participating device may detect the tag and send an updated location through the service. Network reach depends on how many participating devices are present where the item is, whether they can communicate, and whether the tag and service are operating normally.

Neither Samsung’s 120 m specification nor a reviewer’s range observation tells you how likely a tag is to be recovered in a particular neighborhood, airport, school, or rural area. Treat direct range and community-network recovery as separate buying questions. The available Tile material does not provide a comparable, current network-size or recovery-rate figure.

Battery ownership and durability

SmartTag2: a replaceable CR2032

Samsung specifies a replaceable CR2032 coin cell and estimates up to 500 days under typical use. “Up to” describes a manufacturer estimate, not a guarantee. Cold weather, repeated ringing, frequent location checks, and radio conditions can shorten runtime. Keep a compatible replacement cell available and follow the tag’s battery-door instructions rather than forcing the housing.

Tile: never generalize from one model

Tile products do not have one universal battery design that can safely be applied to the entire brand. The evidence available here does not establish current battery type or life for every model. Read the exact model’s battery section before buying, especially if you plan to keep a tracker on keys or luggage for years.

Physical conditions

SmartTag2’s IP67 rating is a useful documented distinction, but it still describes laboratory test conditions. Check that the battery door is properly closed and avoid treating any tracker as indestructible. For Tile, verify the current model’s ingress rating and attachment design; do not assume it matches SmartTag2.

Decision guide: which one fits your situation?

Choose SmartTag2 when all of these are true

  • Your primary phone is a compatible Samsung Galaxy device.
  • You are willing to sign in with a Samsung account and register the tag in SmartThings Find.
  • You want UWB-assisted close finding and your phone is UWB-enabled, or you accept using BLE-only features on a non-UWB-compatible Galaxy device.
  • A replaceable CR2032 and Samsung’s documented IP67 rating matter to your ownership plan.

Investigate Tile when one of these is true

  • Your phone is not a Samsung Galaxy model and you do not want a Samsung-specific tracker.
  • You prefer a tracker service that is not centered on SmartThings Find.
  • The exact Tile model available in your market provides the phone support, battery design, attachment method, and service terms you need.

Pause before buying either product

  • You need a guaranteed live location rather than an approximate last-seen or network-reported location.
  • You have not checked whether your phone, account, app version, and permissions meet the requirements.
  • You are comparing products using only a quoted maximum range.
  • You need a specific battery life, subscription arrangement, or water rating that the current model page does not document.

Setup checklist

Set up Galaxy SmartTag2

  1. Confirm that your Galaxy phone appears on Samsung’s current compatibility list and that it has UWB hardware if you want UWB-assisted features.
  2. Install or update the required Samsung finding app and sign in to your Samsung account.
  3. Turn on Bluetooth and the permissions requested by the app, then keep the tag close to the phone during pairing.
  4. Register the tag in SmartThings Find and give it a meaningful name such as “house keys” or “camera bag.”
  5. Test the ring function while the tag is nearby, then test the close-finding view if your phone supports it.
  6. Record the battery type and inspect the battery door before attaching the tag to an item you will carry outdoors.

Set up a Tile tracker

  1. Identify the exact model number and generation on the packaging or product page.
  2. Confirm the current app, iOS or Android support, battery specification, and any service terms for your market.
  3. Install the current Tile app, create or sign in to the required account, and follow its pairing prompts with the tag nearby.
  4. Name the tag and test its sound and last-known-location functions before attaching it permanently.
  5. Read the model’s battery-replacement or end-of-life instructions and save the support page for future reference.

Troubleshooting before you return a tracker

The tag will not pair

  • Move the tag within a few centimetres of the phone and replace a weak battery if applicable.
  • Confirm Bluetooth, account sign-in, app permissions, and the current app version.
  • Remove a previous pairing only through the app’s supported reset process; repeatedly removing batteries can damage a battery door or interrupt setup.
  • Check the model and region. A product imported from another market may have different support requirements.

The app says the tag is nearby, but you cannot see it

  • Use the sound function and search room by room, checking bags, pockets, drawers, and the underside of furniture.
  • Move slowly because walls and metal containers can make the signal appear inconsistent.
  • For SmartTag2, use UWB or AR-assisted guidance only if the phone and software support it and the required permissions are enabled.

The last location is old

A last-known location is not a live GPS fix. The tag may be out of range, powered down, shielded, or in an area with little network participation. Check the timestamp and retrace the item’s last confirmed movement instead of treating the displayed point as proof that the item remains there.

Battery life is shorter than expected

Compare your use with the manufacturer’s conditions. Frequent rings and location checks consume more power, and temperature can affect coin-cell performance. For SmartTag2, replace the CR2032 with the specified type and close the battery door fully. For Tile, follow the exact model’s instructions; do not assume a battery can be replaced merely because another Tile model allows it.

Buying checklist for a specific listing

  • Phone model and operating-system compatibility are explicitly listed.
  • The exact tracker model and generation are clear.
  • Close-finding technology is identified, including any UWB-phone requirement.
  • Battery type, replaceability, and estimated life are stated for that model.
  • Bluetooth range is labeled as a manufacturer specification or a measured test, with conditions.
  • Water and dust protection, dimensions, and attachment method match your use.
  • Current price, bundle contents, warranty, and any subscription terms are shown for your country.
  • The product can be registered in the account and app you are prepared to use.

Verdict

For a compatible Samsung Galaxy owner, buy Galaxy SmartTag2 when SmartThings Find integration, UWB-assisted close finding, a replaceable CR2032, and the documented IP67 design match your priorities. Samsung’s figures—up to 120 m of BLE distance and up to 500 days of typical battery life—are specifications and estimates, not guarantees.

For everyone else, Tile may be the better direction because it is the broader-platform alternative identified in the April 16, 2026 comparison. Do not choose a Tile model by brand name alone: verify the exact generation, phone support, battery, range, durability, availability, and service terms in your market. If those details are not clear, neither tracker is ready for a confident purchase.
