Samsung’s BM1773 is a V9 QLC enterprise SSD family spanning 16TB to 256TB. A Shenzhen Memory Industry Association report on GMIF2026 described the 256TB model as the world’s smallest 256TB SSD in an enterprise context. Samsung also presented the PCIe 6.0 PM1763 for high-throughput AI and HPC systems, its V10 BV-NAND architecture with more than 400 word lines, and zNAND-O, a developing NAND design for edge and on-device AI.

What Samsung announced

The announcements cover three different layers of storage technology rather than one consumer drive. The BM1773 is the capacity-oriented product family, using V9 QLC NAND and scaling from 16TB to 256TB. The PM1763 is the performance-oriented enterprise SSD, built around a PCIe 6.0 interface for AI and high-performance-computing servers. V10 BV-NAND is a newer flash-memory architecture intended to increase density and I/O efficiency, while zNAND-O is still described as a next-generation development technology.

Kevin Yoon, Samsung Memory China CVP and CTO, summarized the product strategy: “With these two SSDs, we will drive both the performance and capacity markets.”

BM1773: Samsung’s 256TB capacity SSD

What the 256TB claim means

The BM1773 family covers 16TB, 32TB, 64TB, 128TB and 256TB capacities according to the GMIF2026 report. That report calls the 256TB version the world’s smallest 256TB SSD. The wording is attributed to that 2026 event report and refers to an enterprise SSD; it is not a claim that the drive is the smallest 256TB device in every possible form factor or market category.

  • PM883 MZ7LH3T8HMLT 3.84TB SATA 6Gb/s 2.5-Inch Enterprise SSD

BM1773 is intended for shared capacity in AI and server-storage infrastructure. Its V9 QLC designation identifies it as a high-density enterprise NAND product, not a consumer desktop SSD. The announcement does not establish endurance ratings, sustained-throughput figures, exact dimensions, power draw, cooling requirements, pricing or shipping dates.

Where BM1773 fits

  • Primary goal: maximize usable storage density for shared AI and server data.
  • Capacity range: 16TB to 256TB across the BM1773 family.
  • Workload position: capacity-focused rather than the highest-throughput option in Samsung’s announcement.
  • Availability: regional launch timing and orderability were not stated in the cited 2026 material.

PM1763: the performance-focused alternative

Samsung positions PM1763 for high-throughput AI and HPC servers. It uses PCIe 6.0, separating it from BM1773’s capacity-first role. Samsung reported sequential performance of 28,400MB/s read and 21,900MB/s write for a 16TB PM1763 configuration. Those figures apply to that specified configuration; they should not be generalized to every capacity or system design.

PM1763 is therefore the relevant choice when accelerator pipelines and HPC jobs are constrained by storage bandwidth. BM1773 is the more relevant line when the limiting factor is the amount of shared data that can be kept in the server-storage tier. Samsung has not published, in the cited announcements, a directly comparable BM1773 throughput result.

What “400+ layer V-NAND” means

Samsung’s V10 BV-NAND architecture exceeds 400 layers, also described as more than 400 word lines. Samsung says it uses advanced three-stack HARC Merge technology to build that many word lines. HARC, or high-aspect-ratio channel processing, addresses the manufacturing challenge of forming deep, uniform structures as vertical stacks become taller.

V10 also uses wafer bonding. The memory cells and peripheral circuits are manufactured on separate wafers and then bonded vertically. This approach lets Samsung optimize the two parts independently while using the available silicon area more efficiently.

Samsung reports that V10 delivers 58% higher bit density than the previous generation. It also reports I/O above 4.8Gbps, a gain of more than 33% over the prior generation. These are V10 BV-NAND architecture figures; they should not be treated as BM1773 specifications, because BM1773 is identified in the announcement as a V9 QLC family.

zNAND-O and its edge-AI purpose

zNAND-O is presented in Samsung’s FMS announcement as a developing high-performance NAND solution built on V-NAND. Samsung describes four-layer and eight-layer versions, combining high space efficiency, improved I/O performance and low latency for edge AI.

The GMIF2026 report adds that zNAND-O is designed for on-device AI and can be co-packaged with a machine-processing unit through UCIe. That arrangement targets short data paths between processing and memory, which is useful when an edge device must run AI models without constantly reaching a remote server.

How to interpret the announcements for a server deployment

  1. Start with the bottleneck. If the system needs the largest shared storage pool, evaluate the BM1773 capacity range. If jobs are waiting on storage bandwidth, evaluate the PCIe 6.0 PM1763 instead.
  2. Match the number to the configuration. Treat 28,400MB/s read and 21,900MB/s write as PM1763 results for the reported 16TB configuration, not as universal drive-level guarantees.
  3. Confirm platform compatibility. The cited announcements do not provide BM1773 form-factor or interface details, and they do not state PM1763 power, cooling or host-platform requirements. Obtain those specifications before designing a server or storage chassis.
  4. Separate announced technology from shipping products. V10 BV-NAND describes a flash architecture, and zNAND-O remains a development technology. Neither announcement supplies a retail ordering path or firm regional delivery date.
  5. Build the business case from vendor quotes. Capacity, endurance, power, cooling, support terms and pricing are not established by the cited material, so total-cost calculations require Samsung’s final datasheets and a system-level quotation.

Availability and buying caveats

The 2026 announcements establish product positioning and selected technical figures, but they do not establish retail pricing, endurance, exact form factors, shipping dates or regional availability for BM1773 or PM1763. They also do not establish that either SSD is stocked through a particular marketplace. Buyers should request the final product brief, qualification list, warranty terms and power specifications before placing an infrastructure order.
