Samsung Separated Apps is an enterprise Knox feature that lets an organization isolate selected third-party apps from confidential work apps and data on a managed device. It is meant to let employees use approved services, such as travel or rideshare apps, while limiting those apps’ access to company information. It is managed by the organization, not designed as a private vault or a general-purpose app-cloning tool.
What Samsung Separated Apps does
Samsung describes Separated Apps as a sandboxed area or isolated partition for selected third-party apps. On enterprise-managed Android devices, administrators can use it to keep apps that are not fully vetted separate from other apps and data. Samsung’s 2022 explanation of Knox data separation gives the example of allowing employees to use travel services on company phones without granting those services access to confidential work data.
Samsung’s March 25, 2026 Knox overview places Separated Apps among Knox Platform for Enterprise’s device-management capabilities. Samsung says the feature lets IT administrators keep out apps that have not been fully vetted from a cybersecurity perspective. The exact apps and policies depend on the organization’s configuration.

Samsung’s 2024 security explainer describes an isolated partition as one possible configuration. That describes the design; it is not a guarantee that every configuration eliminates every security risk.

Who controls it, and can your employer see it?
For a managed device, the organization’s IT team configures Separated Apps through enterprise mobility-management tools, including Knox Service Plugin. Samsung states that the organization’s MDM, EMM, or UEM system has visibility and control over the apps and data in this area. It is therefore not a private space hidden from the employer that manages the phone.
Samsung’s Knox Platform for Enterprise white paper describes a sandboxed folder for authorized third-party apps on company-owned, business-only phones. A related Samsung government-security explanation describes using controlled third-party apps while preventing them from interacting with agency apps or data.

How it differs from Work Profile, Secure Folder, and app cloning
| Feature or approach | What it is for |
|---|---|
| Samsung Separated Apps | An administrator-controlled Knox capability for isolating selected third-party apps on enterprise-managed devices. |
| Android Work Profile | Android’s work-and-personal separation model, as distinguished from Separated Apps in Samsung’s explanation of data separation. |
| Secure Folder | The official sources cited here do not provide a detailed direct comparison with Separated Apps, so the two should not be treated as the same feature or as replacements for one another. |
| Ordinary app cloning | Running two copies of a personal app or account is not the enterprise security purpose Samsung gives for Separated Apps. |
The useful distinction is the goal and who manages the separation: Work Profile separates work from personal use; Separated Apps isolates selected third-party apps under enterprise policy. The available Samsung descriptions do not support claims that these options are equivalent in encryption strength or device-wide privacy.

Do you need it, and should you remove it?
If your employer manages the phone
Ask your IT administrator why Separated Apps is enabled, which apps are covered, and what policies apply. The organization controls the managed configuration, and disabling or removing a component could affect that setup.

If it is your personal phone
If you only noticed a Separated Apps listing or update, its documented purpose is enterprise app isolation. Samsung’s reviewed materials do not explain why the component appears on a particular unmanaged phone or give a universal removal procedure. Availability and the effect of disabling or removing it may vary with the device, software version, region, and management policy. Check with Samsung support or your device administrator for guidance specific to your phone rather than assuming it is safe to remove.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why it may appear on a Galaxy phone
Samsung’s enterprise documentation explains what the feature is for, but does not establish why it would appear on any particular personally owned device. A visible app entry alone is not enough to determine whether the phone is enrolled in management or whether the component is active. If you are unsure whether your phone is managed, check with the organization that issued or configured it; Samsung Community users have also asked what the app is for and whether it is necessary, but forum questions are not official troubleshooting guidance.
