Samsung Secure Folder and Android’s Private Space both create a protected area, but neither is simply a universal per-app password. Secure Folder is a Samsung Galaxy feature for selected apps, files and personal data. Private Space is Google’s separate Android profile, available on Android 15 and later, where you install apps that can be hidden when the space is locked. The right choice depends on your phone, software version and whether you need protected content, separate app installations or only an authentication prompt.
The short answer
On a supported Galaxy phone or tablet, Secure Folder places chosen apps, files and information inside a Samsung-managed protected area. You unlock that area with a PIN, password, pattern or, where supported, a fingerprint. Apps in Secure Folder can operate separately from their copies outside it, and an app may use a different account inside the folder if the app permits it.
Google’s Private Space, documented for Android 15 and later, is a separate Android profile. You install an app into that profile rather than moving the existing installation into it. When Private Space is locked, its apps can be hidden from the launcher, recent-apps view and parts of Settings. Google also lets you hide the space itself from the bottom of the app list.

What Samsung Secure Folder does
A protected container for more than apps
Secure Folder is designed as a private area on supported Galaxy devices. You can place apps, photos, documents and other files there, then protect the area with its own lock method. It is useful when the information itself matters as much as the application: for example, keeping work documents, personal scans or a second messaging account away from the ordinary app list.
The apps inside are not merely shortcuts to the copies in your normal profile. Samsung describes them as able to operate independently. If an application supports multiple accounts, you can sign in to one account in the regular profile and another in Secure Folder. That behavior is application-dependent; Secure Folder does not force every app to support two accounts.
Availability and setup
Samsung says Secure Folder appears only on supported Galaxy models. On current software, start in Settings and look under Security and privacy or More security settings, then select Secure Folder. The exact labels and location vary by Android release, One UI version and carrier. Searching Settings for “Secure Folder” is often faster than following an old screenshot.
If the option is absent, Samsung says the device may not support the feature. Do not assume that installing a separate app will recreate Samsung’s protected system area. Check the model’s support documentation and software version first.
Adding content and managing the folder
After setup, Secure Folder provides controls for adding or managing apps and files. Adding an app normally creates or enables its Secure Folder copy; it does not turn the ordinary installation into the same instance. Files placed in the folder are managed separately from files outside it, so verify which copy you are opening before editing or sharing.
Samsung’s controls include lock type, auto-lock, notifications, app management, account management, settings and restoration from a previous backup. The available controls can change with software updates, so use the labels shown on your device rather than assuming that a guide for another One UI release matches your screen.

Hiding, locking and encryption
You can hide Secure Folder from the Apps screen and, on supported versions, from the quick panel. Hiding reduces casual discovery; it does not make the data non-existent. Someone who knows the device and its account credentials may still be able to reveal the feature through Settings.

Secure Folder also has an Encrypt action documented by Samsung. While the folder is encrypted, its apps and notifications stop operating. Samsung’s support wording is explicit: “All apps and their notifications will stop working.” Decrypting the folder allows the apps to run and notifications to resume. Treat this as a deliberate availability trade-off, not as a background setting that leaves apps functioning normally.
Version-specific relock behavior
Lock choices are version-sensitive. Samsung says that on Android 16 with One UI 8, the Each time I leave an app auto-lock choice was removed, the default became When screen turns off, and a Lock and exit action was introduced. Older releases can show different choices. If your folder stays unlocked longer than expected after an update, open Secure Folder settings and review the current auto-lock option instead of relying on an older tutorial.
Backup limitations
Samsung’s current guide says Secure Folder no longer supports creating new backups. The same settings still include restoration from a previous backup. These statements describe two different operations: do not assume that a new backup can be made, and do not conclude that every older backup is unusable. Before resetting a phone or deleting the folder, check whether the content exists elsewhere and whether your specific software offers the restoration option.
What Android Private Space does
A separate Android profile
Google describes Private Space as a separate space for hiding and organizing apps. It is available on Android 15 or later; Google’s official guide states, “Private space is available on Android 15 or later.” Availability can still vary by device implementation and software build.
Private Space works as a separate Android profile. Installing an app there installs that app in the private profile. It is not the same installation as the copy in the main space, and Google Help says app data cannot be moved from the main-space app into its Private Space counterpart. You should therefore expect to sign in again and configure the private copy separately.

Setup and a separate lock
On a supported phone, open Settings → Security & privacy → Private space and follow the on-screen setup. Google allows a dedicated lock for Private Space. A separate PIN or password makes the boundary clearer than reusing the device unlock method, although the practical protection still depends on keeping that credential private.
Google also recommends considering a dedicated Google Account when you want stronger separation. An account used only in Private Space can reduce accidental mixing of app data, contacts or synchronisation with the main profile. Whether an individual app offers its own account separation remains that app’s decision.
What is hidden when it is locked
When Private Space is locked, Google says its apps can be hidden from the launcher, recent apps and Settings. You can additionally hide Private Space so it does not appear at the bottom of the app list. This is useful against casual browsing of an unlocked phone, but hiding is not the same as making the profile undetectable.
Google Help warns that Private Space can be uncovered through computer access, including ADB commands and device logs, or by apps. Do not describe it as invisible or as protection against a determined forensic examination. It is a device-level privacy boundary intended for ordinary use, not a guarantee that no trace can ever be found.

Which one fits your privacy need?
Choose Secure Folder for files plus apps on a Galaxy device
Secure Folder is the more natural fit when you want one protected destination for documents, images and applications. It is also the practical choice when you need a second app instance on a supported Galaxy phone and the app allows separate sign-ins. The ability to manage files inside the same protected area is a meaningful difference from a profile that is primarily organized around apps.
Choose Private Space for Android’s profile separation
Private Space is appropriate when your phone runs Android 15 or later and you want apps installed under a distinct Android profile. It gives you a clean separation from the main installation and can hide the private apps from common interface surfaces while locked. Plan for a fresh app setup: the main-space app’s data does not move into the private copy.

Use a manufacturer app lock only when a prompt is all you need
If your goal is simply to require authentication before opening one or two existing apps, your phone maker’s app-lock feature may be closer to that need than either protected space. Because “app lock” is not a single Android-wide specification, verify whether it locks the existing app, creates a duplicate, hides notifications, supports files, and relocks after the screen turns off. Do not assume that behavior from another brand or an older model.
Migration, accounts and data: what to expect
Moving an existing app into Private Space
Private Space does not convert the main-space installation. Install the app from inside Private Space, then complete its setup there. Google says the app data from the main-space copy cannot be moved into the Private Space copy. For an account-based service, signing in again may restore server-held information, but local settings, downloads and offline files may not follow. Check the app’s own export or cloud-sync tools before deleting the original copy.
Adding an app to Secure Folder
Secure Folder lets you add and manage apps within the folder, but the exact result depends on the app. Some apps can run as independent copies with separate accounts; others may limit duplicate installations or share information through the same online account. Test the specific app with non-sensitive data before relying on it for a work or personal separation.
Backups and device resets
Do not treat either feature as a universal backup system. Samsung says new Secure Folder backups are no longer supported, although restoration from a previous backup is still shown. Google’s Private Space Help focuses on profile separation and the inability to move app data from the main installation; it does not establish a general backup promise. Export important files using the app’s supported method and keep an additional copy before a reset, account change or feature removal.

Hiding is not encryption of the entire phone
Both features reduce casual access by placing content behind a lock and removing it from normal views when locked. They do not turn the whole phone into an anonymous device. Notifications, account activity, backups, file shares and connected computers can still create information outside the protected area depending on your settings and the app.
Locking can affect availability
Secure Folder’s Encrypt option intentionally stops its apps and notifications until you decrypt it. That can prevent background syncing, alerts and time-sensitive messages. If you need an app to remain available, use the ordinary lock and auto-lock controls instead and confirm how your One UI version behaves.

Private Space is not guaranteed to withstand technical inspection
Google specifically notes that computer access such as ADB commands, device logs or apps may reveal Private Space. Someone with a high level of access, debugging capability or control of the unlocked device may learn that the profile exists. Use a strong device credential, keep developer and debugging access disabled unless needed, and regard Private Space as a practical privacy feature rather than a forensic-proof vault.
Setup checklists
Secure Folder on a supported Galaxy phone
- Open Settings and search for Secure Folder, or check Security and privacy / More security settings.
- Start setup and choose the available lock method: PIN, password, pattern or a supported fingerprint option.
- Add the apps and files you want kept in the protected area.
- If you need account separation, sign in inside Secure Folder and confirm that the app supports independent accounts.
- Review notifications, auto-lock and visibility settings. On Android 16 with One UI 8, look for the current choices and the Lock and exit action.
- Before deleting or resetting anything, verify how you will preserve the files. Samsung’s current guide does not support creating new Secure Folder backups.
Private Space on Android 15 or later
- Open Settings → Security & privacy → Private space.
- Complete setup and choose whether Private Space should use a dedicated lock.
- Install apps from within Private Space. Treat each installation as a separate profile copy.
- Use a dedicated Google Account if keeping profile data separate is important to you.
- Enable the option to hide Private Space when you do not want it shown at the bottom of the app list.
- Test sign-in, notifications and the app’s own export or sync options before removing the main-space copy.
Troubleshooting
Secure Folder is missing
Confirm the phone is a supported Galaxy model, install the latest available system update, and search Settings for the exact feature name. Samsung says unsupported devices do not show Secure Folder in Settings. Carrier customizations and software versions can also change the menu path.
Private Space is missing
Check the Android version first. Google documents Private Space for Android 15 and later, and a device maker may still vary the implementation. If the phone meets the version requirement but the menu is absent, consult the manufacturer’s current support page for that model rather than assuming that every Android device exposes the same controls.

An app appears empty after moving it
This is expected when you install a fresh Private Space copy: Google says data cannot be moved from the main-space installation. Sign in again or use the app’s supported export and restore process. In Secure Folder, check whether you opened the independent folder copy and whether the app supports a second account.
Notifications stopped in Secure Folder
Check whether Secure Folder is encrypted. Samsung says encryption stops all apps and their notifications until the folder is decrypted. If you need alerts, decrypt it and review the ordinary notification and auto-lock settings.
The folder relocks differently after an update
Read the current Secure Folder auto-lock choices on the device. Samsung changed the choices in Android 16 with One UI 8, removing Each time I leave an app, setting When screen turns off as the default and adding Lock and exit. A tutorial written for an earlier release may no longer describe your phone.
Bottom line
Secure Folder is Samsung’s broader protected container for apps, files and data on supported Galaxy devices. Private Space is Google’s Android profile for separately installed apps on Android 15 and later. Neither should be treated as a universal “app lock,” and neither guarantees total secrecy against technical inspection. Check your model and software, decide whether you need protected files or a separate app profile, and verify migration, notification and backup behavior before moving sensitive data.
