Samsung Internet’s Secret mode can keep ordinary browsing history, cookies, and search records from being saved in the browser’s usual local history. It does not make browsing anonymous: Samsung says activity and data may still be visible to websites, your internet service provider, apps, and the phone manufacturer. Think of it as a way to reduce traces on your phone, not to hide activity from everyone else.
What Secret mode keeps off your phone
Samsung says Secret mode does not save browsing history, cookies, or search records in the usual browser history. Samsung’s developer documentation also describes history, cookies, cache, saved login data, and autofill data as browsing data that is not left behind. This is a description of browser data behavior, not a guarantee that no other device traces or records can exist.
Samsung Support Canada says cookies and browsing history for sites visited in Secret mode are erased from the phone as soon as all Secret mode tabs are closed. Closing one tab while others remain open is not the stated cleanup point.

Who may still see your browsing activity
Samsung’s US support guide warns: “Your activity and data may still be visible to websites, your internet service provider, apps, and phone manufacturer.” A site can therefore still receive activity as you use it, and Secret mode does not prevent your network provider or other relevant parties from observing activity.

The practical distinction is where the privacy protection applies: Secret mode limits what is retained in the browser’s local history, while it does not promise to conceal browsing from outside parties.
What can remain saved in Secret mode
Secret mode is not necessarily a no-save zone. Samsung allows users to save pages and bookmarks within Secret mode; Samsung says these items are visible only in that mode. Its developer documentation describes saved pages and bookmarks as stored in a separate space with encryption and user authentication. That implementation description should not be read as a claim that all browsing activity is encrypted end to end or hidden from websites and network providers.

Which Secret mode settings are worth checking
Samsung’s US guide lists several settings under Secret mode. They add local access controls or change browser behavior; they do not make the mode anonymous.
- Use password: Adds a password requirement for Secret mode data.
- Allow screenshots in Secret mode: Controls whether screenshots can be taken while using the mode.
- Stay in Secret mode after closing the browser: Controls whether the browser returns to Secret mode after it is closed.
- Smart anti-tracking: Provides anti-tracking configuration, distinct from hiding activity from your ISP or the device maker.
- Reset Secret mode: Resets Secret mode settings and data.
Samsung’s separate Knox documentation says biometric enforcement for Secret mode is available on managed devices and requires enterprise mobility management (EMM) or unified endpoint management (UEM). That is an enterprise-device capability, not a general setting users should expect on every phone.

How to find Secret mode settings
Samsung’s current US support instructions document this path. Menu names and availability can differ by Samsung Internet version, region, or device.
- Open Samsung Internet and tap Tools.
- Tap Settings, then Personal browsing data.
- Tap Secret mode settings and review the available controls.
In Samsung’s guide, the tab manager’s mask icon identifies Secret mode. The guide also says Secret mode terminates when the Browser app is closed, while its “Stay in Secret mode after closing the browser” control changes what happens when it is opened again.

Samsung says Secret mode is restricted for Samsung accounts registered as child accounts; age restrictions vary by country. If the option or a control is missing, the installed browser version, region, account status, or device management may affect availability.

When Secret mode is useful
Use it when you want to reduce the browsing history and cookie traces left in Samsung Internet on the phone, especially on a device other people may use. Close all Secret mode tabs to trigger the documented clearing of cookies and browsing history. Do not rely on it to conceal visits from websites, your internet service provider, apps, or the phone manufacturer.
