On most Samsung Galaxy phones and tablets, press the Power/Side button and Volume Down together, then release promptly. The screen flashes and a preview or toolbar may appear. Button locations and available options vary by model and software, but this is the quickest method to try first.
Take a screenshot with the buttons
- Open the screen you want to capture.
- Briefly press the Power/Side button and Volume Down at the same time, then release both. Samsung describes a flash as the capture indicator. Button placement can vary by device. Samsung’s Galaxy screenshot guide covers the standard method.
- Use the preview or toolbar, if shown, to crop, edit, share, or start a scrolling capture.
On Galaxy devices with a physical Home button, Samsung Canada instructs users to press Power and Home together. See Samsung Canada’s instructions. If your buttons or steps differ, consult the manual for your model and regional variant.
Choose another way to capture the screen
These alternatives depend on your model, settings, or assistant setup. They are optional; the button shortcut does not require them.
Use Palm swipe
- Check for the setting at Settings > Advanced features > Motions and gestures > Palm swipe to capture, and turn it on if available.
- Swipe the edge of your hand across the display to capture.
Menu names and availability vary. If the option is missing, your device may not support the gesture. Samsung says Palm swipe is unavailable while the keyboard is showing. Its motions and gestures guide describes the feature and limitation.

Ask an assistant
If the relevant assistant is set up and available on your device, Samsung documents the voice requests “Hey Bixby, take a screenshot” and “Hey Google, take a screenshot.” Assistant availability and setup determine whether these commands work.
Use Screen write with a compatible S Pen
On supported devices, remove the S Pen, open Air command, choose Screen write, annotate if desired, and save to Gallery. This is useful when you want to mark up the capture; it is not needed for an ordinary screenshot. S Pen functions vary by model. Samsung’s Galaxy tablet screenshot guidance explains the option.

Try the Tasks Edge panel
Samsung also documents a Take screenshot shortcut in the Tasks Edge panel. If the panel is configured on your device, use that shortcut; it may need to be added first. See Samsung Canada’s guide for this option.

Capture a long page with Scroll capture
- Take a normal screenshot while viewing content that continues beyond the screen.
- When the screenshot toolbar appears, tap the Scroll capture icon, shown as two downward arrows.
- Tap the icon again to extend the capture farther down the page, then stop when you have the portion you need.
The control appears only when Samsung’s device detects content extending beyond one screen. Some apps and websites may not support scrolling capture, so the icon may not appear even on a compatible Galaxy device. See Samsung’s screenshot guidance.

Find, edit, or share the screenshot
Open Gallery > Albums > Screenshots to locate saved captures. Samsung also documents finding them in My Files > Images. If a preview or toolbar is available immediately after capture, use it to crop, annotate, or share before opening Gallery. These paths are described in Samsung Canada’s guide and Samsung’s Galaxy screenshot guide.

The button shortcut does not capture
- Press both buttons together and release promptly rather than holding them down.
- Check whether a bulky case makes the buttons hard to press. Samsung Australia suggests temporarily removing an obstructive case; its guidance is for Australian device variants: Samsung Australia’s screenshot help.
- If the button positions or behavior differ, check the manual for your exact model and regional version.
Palm swipe does nothing
- Confirm that Palm swipe to capture exists in settings and is enabled.
- Swipe with the edge of your hand, and make sure the keyboard is not open.
- Some Galaxy devices do not support the gesture because of hardware limitations. Samsung cites the Tab S6 Lite as one tablet example; see Samsung Canada’s instructions and Samsung’s gesture guide.
Scroll capture is missing
First check that the content continues beyond the screen. If it does and the icon still is not shown, the app or website may not support the feature.

A particular screen will not capture
Some apps and screens block screenshots for privacy or security. Samsung also notes that available features and settings can differ by model, carrier, and software version, so a method that works on one Galaxy device may not be available on another. See Samsung’s support guidance.
