To increase screen timeout on a Samsung Galaxy phone, open Settings > Display > Screen timeout and select a longer option from the menu. Samsung’s US support guidance lists durations up to 10 minutes, but available choices vary by model and software version. A longer timeout is convenient, but it uses more battery.
Change the screen timeout
- Open Settings.
- Tap Display, then Screen timeout. If the labels differ, search Settings for “Screen timeout.”
- Select a longer duration from the options shown on your phone. Samsung’s US guidance lists up to 10 minutes, but your device’s menu is the final guide because choices can vary by model and software version. Samsung US explains the setting and navigation path, and Samsung Canada notes that only durations listed in the menu can be selected.
What the timeout controls
Screen timeout is the period of inactivity before the main display turns off. It is not a brightness control: changing the timeout does not stop the screen from dimming, and brightness settings do not extend the inactivity timer. Samsung describes the timeout as a power-saving feature. Samsung’s support guidance explains the setting and its battery tradeoff.
Choose between a longer timer and viewing detection

To look for the viewing feature, check your phone’s settings for Keep screen on while viewing; on older software, look for Smart stay. Samsung’s US support page describes how the feature uses the front camera. It is a different approach from setting a longer fixed inactivity interval.

A longer timeout means the display can remain on longer when you leave the phone idle, which uses more battery. Samsung Canada recommends one minute or less as a battery-conscious choice; that is guidance, not a measured battery-life guarantee or a requirement for every user. Choose a duration that fits how you use the phone. Samsung Canada’s guidance does not give a specific percentage or number of minutes of battery life saved by a particular setting.

If the screen still turns off
- Check the available options: Search Settings for “Screen timeout” if the menu path or wording differs. The durations available on your phone determine what you can select.
- When it turns off while you are looking at it: Look for Keep screen on while viewing, or Smart stay on some older software, if your device supports it.
- When a case is attached: If the option is available, inspect Settings > Advanced features > Accessories for an Auto screen on and off setting. Samsung says this option appears only with certain cases or accessories. Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance covers this setting.
- When only the locked screen goes dark quickly: The lock screen can turn off sooner than the main display’s timeout and may have separate behavior. Changing the main screen timeout does not necessarily change it. Samsung Canada explains this distinction.
Can you turn screen timeout off completely?
Samsung’s support guidance describes finite timeout choices rather than a “never” option. Samsung Japan explicitly says the timeout cannot be set to “none”; the exact options remain device- and region-dependent, so check the menu on your phone. Samsung Japan’s guidance states this limitation.
