To turn off a Samsung Galaxy S24, press and hold the Side button and Volume down together until the power menu appears. Tap Power off, then tap Power off again to confirm. Samsung documents this button sequence for newer Galaxy phones.
Turn off the S24 with its buttons
- Press and hold the Side button and Volume down at the same time for a few seconds, until the power menu appears.
- Tap Power off.
- Tap Power off again to confirm. The phone will shut down. Samsung’s power instructions describe this method.
Use Quick settings instead
If you would rather not use the buttons, swipe down from the top of the screen with two fingers to open Quick settings. Tap the Power icon near Settings, choose Power off, and tap Power off again to confirm. This opens the same shutdown menu.
Why holding the Side button alone may not work
On newer Galaxy phones, the Side button can be configured to launch Bixby or another digital assistant when held. In that case, a long press may not open the power menu. Use Side plus Volume down or the Quick settings Power icon instead. Samsung explains the behavior in its guidance on powering off Galaxy phones without a Power key.

If the S24 is frozen or unresponsive
A long hold of Side and Volume down is a recovery step for a completely frozen phone, not the usual menu-based shutdown. Samsung says to hold the buttons until the device shuts down or restarts; this can take up to 60 seconds. Follow Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance.
If the phone opens Maintenance Boot Mode, use the volume buttons to highlight Normal Boot, then select it with the Power or Bixby button. If it still will not turn off, Samsung recommends requesting service.

Which shutdown method should you use?
