Samsung’s Mobile Experience division has reportedly found that Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 runs beyond thermal targets and loses processing speed during prolonged heavy workloads while being validated for the unreleased Galaxy S27 Ultra. Seoul Economic Daily reported on October 16, 2026, that Samsung asked Qualcomm to fix the problems by a mid-October deadline. If the chip still fails Samsung’s requirements, the company may switch to its own Exynos 2700, according to industry-source reporting.
What Samsung’s reported test problem actually is
The allegation concerns sustained performance, not a published failure in peak benchmark speed. During extended, demanding workloads, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 allegedly exceeded Samsung’s temperature limits and then reduced its operating performance to control heat. That behavior is commonly called thermal throttling: the processor lowers clocks or other operating parameters after reaching a thermal or power limit.
These findings reportedly surfaced during validation of the Galaxy S27 Ultra, which has not been officially announced. Neither Samsung nor Qualcomm has confirmed the reports in the cited material, and no test log has been released.

Why Qualcomm is facing a reported mid-October deadline
Seoul Economic Daily said Samsung asked Qualcomm for fixes by a mid-October deadline. SamMobile reported the same broad validation concern on October 16, 2026. In practical terms, such a deadline would give Qualcomm a short window to adjust silicon behavior, firmware, power-management settings, or guidance for the phone’s cooling design before Samsung locks production decisions.

The reporting describes a possible ultimatum rather than a confirmed contract condition. It does not say what penalties Qualcomm would face, whether Samsung has formally rejected the chip, or whether engineering changes have already been delivered. The deadline could also apply to a specific validation milestone rather than the date on which Samsung must make a public announcement.
Qualcomm’s public specifications and independent benchmark context
Qualcomm officially announced the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 on September 22, 2026. The company positioned both as premium Android smartphone platforms for agentic artificial intelligence, gaming, camera processing, and connectivity. The announcement named HONOR, iQOO, Motorola, OnePlus, OPPO, REDMI, RedMagic, vivo, and Xiaomi as launch partners; Samsung was not listed among those named partners.

Android Authority reported a 19% improvement over Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 in 3DMark Wild Life Extreme rasterization when testing a Qualcomm reference phone on September 24, 2026. That is a result from Qualcomm’s reference hardware and a graphics benchmark, not a measurement of a Galaxy S27 Ultra. A short or moderate benchmark run can show strong peak performance while a longer loop exposes heat limits, so the result neither disproves nor confirms Samsung’s alleged sustained-load problem.
Could the Galaxy S27 Ultra use Exynos 2700 instead?
The reported fallback is Samsung’s Exynos 2700. Seoul Economic Daily and SamMobile say Samsung may use it if Qualcomm cannot meet thermal and performance requirements. That remains a contingency, not an announced product decision.

There is currently no controlled, public comparison between Exynos 2700 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. The available reports provide no Exynos clock speeds, graphics scores, power measurements, modem results, battery tests, artificial-intelligence throughput, or software-build details. It is therefore not possible to say that Exynos 2700 is faster, cooler, or more efficient.

What “overheating” means in this report
“Overheating” in the headlines should not be read as evidence that phones are catching fire or becoming unsafe. The specific claim is that the processor repeatedly exceeded internal temperature thresholds during sustained workloads and then lost speed. A threshold breach can lead to throttling without indicating a safety failure, but the missing measurements make the severity impossible to quantify from the reports alone.

Phone performance also depends on chassis size, vapor-chamber or other cooling hardware, firmware limits, display resolution, ambient temperature, game or benchmark settings, and whether the device is charging. Without those conditions, a result from one validation build cannot be generalized to all phones using the chip.

- Qualcomm responds to Samsung’s validation feedback. The response could involve silicon revisions, firmware changes, power-management tuning, or recommendations for the phone’s cooling system; the reports do not identify which approach is being pursued.
- Samsung repeats sustained-load tests. Engineers would need to check temperature behavior and performance retention over long workloads rather than relying only on peak scores.
- Samsung chooses a platform. If the Snapdragon solution meets requirements, it could remain under consideration. If not, the reported alternative is Exynos 2700.
- Official product details settle the question. Samsung’s announcement and independent tests of retail hardware will be needed to establish the final chip, regional variants, thermals, and performance.
What buyers should conclude now
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 is publicly positioned as a high-end mobile platform, and a Qualcomm reference phone produced a 19% 3DMark Wild Life Extreme rasterization gain over the previous generation. Separately, industry sources say Samsung found sustained-load thermal and performance problems during Galaxy S27 Ultra validation and gave Qualcomm a mid-October window to address them. Those statements can both be true: strong short-run benchmark performance does not guarantee stable speed during long workloads.
