To turn down the volume with a Samsung remote, move the Volume control downward. Move it upward to make the sound louder; pressing the control may mute the TV instead.
Lower the volume with the rocker or Volume button
Find the control marked VOL or Volume and move it down. On many slim Samsung Smart Remotes, it is a small rocker or movable button rather than a pair of large keys. Samsung’s instructions for the Smart Remote say to “Move the Volume button up or down to increase or decrease sound.” Samsung Support
Pressing the volume control is a separate action: on the Smart Remote covered by Samsung’s guide, a press mutes the sound. If the TV goes silent after a press, move the control up or down to adjust the level.
If the volume control has no effect
Remote designs and pairing steps vary by TV and remote model. Start with basic checks, then consult the manual for your exact model before trying a button combination or menu path.

- Check whether other remote buttons work. If none do, check the battery or charge state and make sure no button is stuck.
- For a battery-powered remote, Samsung’s U.S. troubleshooting guide recommends removing the batteries and holding Power for eight seconds as a reset step. See Samsung’s troubleshooting instructions.
- If the remote has lost its connection, re-pair it using the instructions for your specific TV and remote. Samsung’s regional guidance describes holding Power and Volume Up on the models it covers; do not assume that combination applies to every model. Samsung Smart Remote pairing guidance.
- If other buttons work but volume does not, check whether the issue happens across different TV apps and input sources. Also check the setup of any connected audio device.
Check whether the remote is controlling a soundbar
If the TV’s Sound Output is set to a compatible soundbar, the Samsung TV remote may adjust or mute that soundbar rather than the TV’s built-in speakers. Samsung documents this setup with an optical cable or an HDMI ARC connection; menu wording and device support can vary. Samsung’s soundbar connection and control guidance.
If the remote is missing or broken
Match a replacement to the TV model
Samsung sells replacement remotes through its parts website and advises searching by the TV or projector’s model number. Use that number to check fit instead of assuming one remote works with every Samsung set. Samsung replacement-remote guidance.

Check universal-remote compatibility
Samsung says most universal remotes work with its TVs or projectors, but you should confirm that the remote explicitly supports Samsung. A universal remote may not include every Samsung device function, and its setup instructions depend on the remote maker. Samsung’s guidance on replacement and universal remotes.
