On Samsung remotes that include the four color keys, A is red, B is green, C is yellow, and D is blue. Those letters are a technical mapping for the colored-key signals; they are not four permanent shortcuts with the same action everywhere. The screen, app, or TV feature you are using decides what a color key does.
What the A, B, C and D buttons mean
Samsung’s Smart TV platform documentation maps the lettered keys to four color-key events:
| Letter | Color | Platform key event |
|---|---|---|
| A | Red | XF86Red |
| B | Green | XF86Green |
| C | Yellow | XF86Yellow |
| D | Blue | XF86Blue |
This table tells you which signal a button sends. It does not say that red always opens one menu, green always confirms an action, or blue always launches a particular service. Samsung uses the same color-key signals in different parts of the Smart TV interface, and each feature can assign its own command to them.
Think of the buttons as four context-sensitive controls. The television or app displays a legend when the keys are available, such as a colored label beside an option. Press the matching color key only when the current screen gives that instruction. If no instruction is visible, the key may have no action in that feature.

Why one color can do different things
The active screen determines the meaning of a color key. Samsung’s Q9FN-series user manual describes the buttons this way: “Use these colored buttons to access additional options specific to the feature you are using.” That wording is important: the option belongs to the feature, not to the color itself.
For example, a TV setting page could use a color key for an additional menu, while a broadcast-information panel or an app could use the same key for an entirely different option. The A/B/C/D labels remain the same, but the command associated with each color is supplied by the interface currently on screen.
This is why memorizing a rule such as “A means back” or “D means tools” causes problems. Such a rule may appear to work in one menu and fail in another. Samsung’s platform-level mapping identifies the key color; the individual application or feature supplies the action.

When a screen shows red, green, yellow, or blue labels, match the label to the corresponding letter or color on your remote. If the screen does not show a color instruction, do not assume that pressing a key will produce a universal result. The model-specific J6200 manual reproduction likewise tells users to use A/B/C/D according to the directions shown on the TV screen.
Expect the result to change by app or input
Changing from a TV channel to a settings panel, guide, media screen, or another app can change the available color-key commands. A key that worked on one screen can appear inactive on the next. That behavior is normal for context-sensitive controls and does not by itself indicate a defective remote.

Samsung remote layouts are not all the same
Do not assume that every Samsung television has four dedicated buttons marked A, B, C, and D. Samsung states in its Q9FN documentation that remote images, buttons, and functions can differ by model. The physical design also changed across generations.
| Remote design | How the color controls appear | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Dedicated color-key layout | Separate A/B/C/D or red/green/yellow/blue keys | Press the letter or matching color when the screen prompts you. |
| Q9FN-series Smart Remote example | A Color/Number button | Pressing it alternates the colored buttons and a virtual numeric pad on that model. |
| Other model generations | Different combinations of labeled, shared, or virtual controls | Use the instructions for that television’s exact remote; do not copy a sequence from another model. |
On the official 2018 Q9FN Series remote, the Color/Number button is a mode switch. “Each time you press this button, the colored buttons and the virtual numeric pad are displayed alternately,” the manual explains. In practice, you may need to press that control once to expose the color choices and again to return to number entry. This is a description of the Q9FN remote, not a universal instruction for every Samsung Smart Remote.

Older Samsung manuals show separate A/B/C/D controls. A reproduced manual for the PN43E450A1FXZA, for example, documents an older layout with those controls. That example supports the general point that Samsung’s button arrangements vary by model; it does not establish how a current television will be laid out.
How to use a color key correctly
Use this procedure whenever a Samsung screen asks for a colored-button action:
- Identify the active feature. Note whether you are in live TV, a guide, a settings page, media playback, or an app. The feature determines the command.
- Look for a color legend. Read the labels shown on the TV screen. A red, green, yellow, or blue prompt is the instruction that matters for that screen.
- Locate the control on your remote. On a remote with dedicated keys, use A/red, B/green, C/yellow, or D/blue. On a Q9FN-style remote, press the Color/Number control if necessary to switch from the virtual number pad to the colored controls.
- Press the requested key once. The screen should carry out the option displayed beside that color. Avoid pressing several colors in sequence unless the interface asks for another selection.
- Read the new prompt. If the screen changes, use its updated legend rather than relying on what the previous screen used the color for.
- Check the exact manual if the layout is unclear. Search the television’s model number in Samsung’s documentation and use the remote illustration and button descriptions for that model.
This method separates two questions that are often confused: which letter corresponds to a color, and what that color does in the current feature. The first answer is stable on the documented platform; the second is supplied by the screen.

What to do when pressing A, B, C or D appears to do nothing
A color key can appear unresponsive for several ordinary reasons that do not require a fixed shortcut mapping.
- No color command is active. If the current screen shows no red, green, yellow, or blue instruction, that feature may not use the keys at that moment.
- The remote is in another control mode. On the Q9FN Smart Remote, the Color/Number button alternates between color controls and a virtual number pad. If the number pad is displayed, switch modes before looking for a color action.
- You are following instructions for a different model. Samsung warns that button layouts and functions differ. A sequence from an older manual or another series may not apply to your television.
- The app has its own behavior. The same platform key event can be interpreted differently by different features. Follow the app’s on-screen legend instead of a general internet shortcut list.
Start by returning your attention to the screen: identify the feature, find its legend, and confirm that the remote is presenting the color controls. If the result is still unclear, consult the manual for the exact TV and remote model. The J6200 manual’s instruction to follow on-screen directions is a useful model-specific reminder, not a promise that every Samsung interface uses the keys in the same way.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to identify the right Samsung manual
Model-specific documentation is the safest reference because Samsung has released remotes with different physical controls and operating conventions. Find the model code on the television’s information label or in the TV’s system information, then match that code to the manual. Confirm that the manual’s remote illustration resembles the one in your hand.
When reading a manual, look for sections named “Remote Control,” “Buttons,” “Color/Number,” or “Using the remote.” Give priority to the instructions for your exact series and year. The official 2018 Q9FN Series manual is authoritative for the Q9FN remote it describes, while a third-party reproduction of a J6200 manual is best treated as model-specific corroboration rather than a current, universal Samsung rule.
If a remote is lost or damaged, identify the television model before ordering a replacement. Samsung’s warning about differing buttons and functions means that a remote that physically fits or powers on the TV may still lack the expected color-control arrangement. Compatibility should be checked against the model’s documentation, not inferred from the presence of A/B/C/D labels on a listing.

Common misconceptions about the colored buttons
“A, B, C and D are four permanent shortcuts.”
They are not. The documented mapping is A-to-red, B-to-green, C-to-yellow, and D-to-blue. The action attached to each color belongs to the feature currently using the remote.
“Every Samsung remote has four physical color buttons.”
They do not. Some remotes have dedicated keys, while the Q9FN Smart Remote uses a Color/Number control to alternate colored controls with a virtual number pad. Other generations use different layouts.
“A button must work because another Samsung menu used it.”
Not necessarily. A color key can be active in one screen and unused in another. The absence of a response is expected when the current feature has not assigned an option to that key.
“The letter is more important than the color.”
The letter and color identify the same platform key pairing: A/red, B/green, C/yellow, and D/blue. Use whichever label the physical remote and on-screen prompt make easiest to match.

| What color is A? | Red. |
| What color is B? | Green. |
| What color is C? | Yellow. |
| What color is D? | Blue. |
| What does a color key do? | The action assigned by the active TV feature or app. |
| Why can’t I find four buttons? | Your model may use a shared Color/Number control or another remote layout. |
| What should I follow? | The color legend on screen and the manual for your exact model. |
The practical rule is simple: use the A/B/C/D mapping to identify the color, then let the current Samsung screen tell you the action. That approach works across the documented layouts without pretending that Samsung assigned one permanent shortcut to each button.
