For most Samsung refrigerators, start with 38°F for the refrigerator and -2°F for the freezer. Samsung relays USDA guidance to keep refrigerated food below 40°F and frozen food below 0°F; your model’s manual and control-panel guidance take precedence if they differ. Because the display may not match the temperature in every part of the compartment, verify conditions with a thermometer before deciding that food is being stored safely.

What temperature should a Samsung refrigerator be?

Samsung’s typical recommended settings are 38°F for the refrigerator and -2°F for the freezer. Samsung’s US Support page attributes the safety thresholds to the USDA: refrigerated food should stay below 40°F, and frozen food below 0°F. The typical settings provide some margin below those thresholds, but they are not a substitute for your model’s instructions.

Some Samsung panels use bars rather than degrees, and recommendations can vary by model. Samsung notes that some models’ recommended setting is three illuminated bars. Check the manual for your refrigerator if its display or guidance does not match the temperatures above. Samsung’s temperature-setting guidance explains the general recommendations and directs owners to model-specific instructions.

How to change the temperature on your Samsung refrigerator

The control path depends on the refrigerator’s panel and generation. Identify the control type you have, then use the matching method; do not assume that one button sequence applies to every Samsung model.

Family Hub models

On supported Family Hub refrigerators, temperature controls are available through the SmartThings app. Some older Family Hub models use Fridge Manager on the refrigerator’s display. The names and available controls may differ by model. Samsung’s control instructions cover these variations.

Panels with Fridge and Freezer buttons

On models with dedicated Fridge and Freezer buttons, use the button for the compartment you want to adjust and follow the display prompts or the instructions in the manual. Some models also include Power Cool or Power Freeze, which temporarily increases cooling or freezing; availability and operation vary.

Panels with arrow buttons and a menu

On some panels, use the arrow buttons to select Fridge, Freezer, or FlexZone, then change the setting with the panel controls. The exact sequence depends on the model, so follow its manual if the menu labels or buttons differ from this description.

How to check the actual temperature

The display represents an average, and Samsung says the back and bottom of a compartment can be colder. To check the refrigerator, place a refrigerator thermometer in a glass of water near the middle of the compartment and leave the doors closed for up to eight hours before reading it. For the freezer, place the thermometer between frozen packages; do not put it in water.

How to use Samsung crisper-drawer humidity controls

Many Samsung crisper drawers have humidity controls. Choose the setting with the fruits or vegetables in the drawer in mind, and check your model’s manual for the specific control and its options. Samsung does not provide one universal produce-by-produce setting chart for every drawer, so avoid applying a setting recommendation from a different model as if it were universal. Samsung’s refrigerator care guidance describes the humidity-control feature.

Cleaning and replacing the water filter

Deep-clean the refrigerator every six months

Samsung recommends a deep clean every six months. Follow your model’s manual for cleaning instructions, especially for removable parts and areas around water or electrical components. Samsung’s maintenance guidance outlines its care recommendations.

Replace the filter and reset its reminder

Samsung recommends replacing the water filter every six months and resetting the filter reminder after replacement. Filter location and fit vary by refrigerator. Samsung lists filter codes HAF-CIN, HAF-QIN, and HAFCU1; the correct one depends on your model. Check the existing filter’s code or your refrigerator manual before purchasing rather than choosing by appearance alone.

Use Samsung’s water-filter replacement guide to identify the filter and follow the replacement and indicator-reset steps.

What to check when cooling or ice production falters

The refrigerator is warmer than expected

If you recently changed the temperature, allow up to 28 hours for the appliance to reach its setting before treating the reading as a persistent problem. Hot food can raise the compartment temperature, according to Samsung; let food cool appropriately before storing it. Check that the door seals are clean, since Samsung identifies seal care as part of cooling troubleshooting. For ongoing cooling trouble, use the model’s manual and Samsung’s cooling troubleshooting guide.

The ice maker is making little or no ice

Samsung says the freezer must be at 0°F or colder for ice production. Its ice-maker troubleshooting guide specifies a minimum water pressure of 20 psi; low pressure can also produce small or shattered cubes. Samsung recommends dumping unused ice every other week to help limit clumping.

If these checks do not resolve the issue, consult the model-specific manual and Samsung’s ice-maker troubleshooting guidance. Avoid forcing a stuck ice bucket or attempting an improvised defrost; follow the instructions for your model or contact Samsung support or service.
