If your Samsung refrigerator is not making ice, first check the freezer temperature, ice-maker setting, bucket seating, and water supply. A failed ice-maker assembly is only one possibility. Use the Test button only as directed for your model, and call for service if the test produces no response after a power cycle or the ice maker is frozen over.
Start with the symptom and your refrigerator model
Samsung refrigerators vary in ice-maker location, controls, and bucket design. Before removing a bucket or cover, find the model number and consult the user manual for the correct procedure. Samsung treats ice production and dispensing as separate problems, so identify which issue you have:
- No ice: Check temperature, whether the ice maker is on, bucket seating, and water supply.
- Too little ice: Check the temperature, water flow, and filter condition.
- Ice is present but will not dispense: Troubleshoot the dispenser separately from ice production.
- Unusual ice or a stuck bucket: Check model-specific guidance; do not force a frozen or stuck bucket.

Check temperature, settings, and bucket position
Confirm the freezer is cold enough
Samsung says the freezer must reach 0°F or lower for ice production, including on models with an ice maker in the refrigerator compartment. If the displayed temperature is warmer, address the cooling issue first. Also check that the freezer door closes properly.

Make sure the intended ice maker is on
Check the model’s Ice Off/Ice On control. Depending on the refrigerator, the setting may be on the control panel, in Family Hub’s Fridge Manager, or in SmartThings. If your refrigerator has two ice makers, confirm the one you expect to produce ice is enabled.
Check the bucket
For a refrigerator-compartment ice maker, make sure the bucket is fully seated and locked. Keep objects other than ice out of it: an item in the bucket can cause the ice maker to register that it is full.

Use the Test button as a diagnostic—not a universal reset
Follow the instructions for your exact model before removing the bucket or operating the Test button. On most models, Samsung says the button becomes visible after the ice bucket is removed. Do not press it repeatedly when the tray is full; Samsung warns that doing so can cause overflow or jamming.
- Remove the bucket only if your model’s user manual says how to do so.
- Press and hold Test until you hear a chime. Samsung says this can take up to 10 seconds.
- Allow the test to run: Samsung gives an approximate duration of six minutes for a refrigerator-compartment ice maker and about 30 seconds for a freezer-compartment ice maker.
- Observe whether the mechanism moves and whether the water valve hums and supplies water at the end.
- If there is no chime, power-cycle the refrigerator for two minutes, then retry once as directed.
If there is still no reaction after the power cycle, Samsung recommends requesting service. The timing and steps are general Samsung guidance; your model’s instructions take precedence. See Samsung’s ice-maker reset instructions.

If the test does not fill, check water flow and the filter
Samsung specifies a minimum water pressure of 20 psi. On a refrigerator with a dispenser, its flow check is whether at least 6 ounces (three-quarters of a cup) dispenses in less than 10 seconds.
- Make sure the household water-supply valve is fully open.
- Check that the water line is not pinched or kinked.
- If the dispenser flow is weak, Samsung says low pressure or an old filter may be responsible. Compare flow with the filter removed only if the filter instructions describe that check.
- If replacement is needed, choose a filter compatible with your exact refrigerator model; a new filter is not a universal fix.
If the ice maker has never worked properly since the water line was adjusted, Samsung advises confirming that pressure is at least 20 psi and recommends contacting a plumber for help. Follow Samsung’s water-pressure and filter troubleshooting guidance.

- Samsung’s reset guidance reports repeated chimes.
- The ice maker is frozen over, or the bucket is stuck.
- An error code appears; follow the error guidance for your model.
Do not force out a stuck bucket or use a hair dryer to defrost it. Samsung warns that these actions can damage the refrigerator and advises service for a frozen ice maker. See its guidance for stuck or frozen ice makers.
