On most Samsung refrigerators with physical controls, press and hold Filter Reset (3 sec)—or the button that carries that secondary label—for three seconds. Samsung says the control may be labeled Alarm, Water Filter, or Ice/Water, depending on the model. Family Hub models use a touchscreen menu instead. Reset the indicator after replacing the compatible filter; resetting it only restarts the reminder timer.
Reset the light on a physical control panel

If the filter is due, replace it with a cartridge verified for your refrigerator’s model before resetting the reminder.

Look for Filter Reset (3 sec) on the panel. It may be printed as a secondary function on another button; Samsung identifies Alarm, Water Filter, and Ice/Water as possible controls.

Press and hold the identified control for three seconds. Check whether the indicator turns off or returns to its normal status.

If the control label or result differs, consult the manual for your exact refrigerator model rather than trying unrelated button combinations.
Panel labels vary. For example, Samsung’s US guide for the RF28R7351*/RF28R7201* family identifies a control labeled Ice Maker / Filter Reset; that example is not a universal control name. See Samsung’s RF28 panel guide.
Reset a Family Hub refrigerator
For Family Hub models covered by Samsung Canada’s instructions, use the screen: Apps → Fridge Manager → Fridge Settings → Water Filter → Reset → Proceed. Menu availability can vary by model. See Samsung Canada’s Family Hub reset steps.

What the filter light means
The indicator is a replacement reminder driven by a timer, not a measurement of the filter’s condition. Samsung says it generally activates after about six months. Water quality and how much water the dispenser is used can mean a filter needs replacement sooner or later, so use the reminder alongside your model’s instructions and actual use.
Resetting clears or restarts the reminder; it does not replace or clean the cartridge. If the light has come on and the filter has not been changed, replace it before resetting. Samsung’s replacement guide explains the reminder and replacement process.
Choose a filter that fits your exact model
Do not select a cartridge by brand name alone. Samsung says filter types differ among refrigerator models. Find the refrigerator’s model number and confirm compatibility using Samsung’s filter lookup or the model manual before buying. Samsung Canada gives HAF-CIN, HAF-QIN, and HAFCU1 as examples of internal filter types; none should be assumed to fit every model or market.

Compare a candidate cartridge against the refrigerator’s exact model compatibility, cartridge family or shape, and the market or region for which it is sold. The official guidance does not establish a universal performance ranking among filter options. Check Samsung Canada’s compatibility guidance.
Replace and flush the cartridge
Samsung Canada’s replacement instructions recommend shutting off the water supply and dispensing water until flow stops to relieve pressure. Remove the old filter, insert and lock the compatible replacement, reset the indicator, and turn the supply back on. Follow the refrigerator’s own manual if its model-specific procedure differs.
After installation, Samsung Canada recommends dispensing and discarding about seven minutes of water—approximately 10–12 large glasses—for the models covered by that guide. Do not drink the flush water. Read the complete Samsung Canada replacement steps.

If the light will not reset

The three-second hold has no effect: Check whether the panel uses a secondary button label, a paired-button action, or an on-screen menu. Use the manual for the exact model; the common sequence is not universal.

Your refrigerator has a touchscreen: Look for the Water Filter reset option in its refrigerator settings. For covered Family Hub models, follow the menu path above.

You are unsure which cartridge to install: Locate the model number and verify the cartridge in Samsung’s model-specific compatibility information before replacement.

The light is on but the filter has not been changed: Replace the filter first. Clearing the timer alone does not restore the cartridge.
Samsung’s replacement and reset instructions and the refrigerator’s model manual are the appropriate references when a panel behaves differently.
