There is no responsible single winner until the LG OLED model, screen size and market are identified. For dark-room movie watching, LG OLED is the stronger technology starting point because each pixel is self-lit and independently switched, allowing very dark scenes without a shared LCD backlight. The Samsung QE50QN80H is a 50-inch Mini LED LCD alternative aimed at buyers who want Samsung processing, HDR10+ support and gaming features in a bright-room-friendly LCD design.
Gaming requires extra caution. Samsung’s UK specification page for the 2026 QE50QN80HAUXXU lists a 50Hz display refresh rate, while also listing VRR and 4K at 120Hz. It separately says that Motion Xcelerator 144Hz and FreeSync Premium Pro do not apply to the 50-inch size. LG’s published 2026 gaming figures of up to 165Hz VRR apply to specified G6 OLED models and sizes, not to every LG OLED. Compare the exact regional models and input modes before buying.

First, define which televisions you are comparing
“LG OLED” is a category, not one television. LG sells multiple OLED lines and sizes, and the first-generation or model year, screen size and country can change refresh-rate and other features. A 42-inch model may not have the same gaming specification as a 77-inch model, and a US specification cannot automatically be applied to a UK television.
The Samsung side is more precise: Samsung’s UK product page identifies QE50QN80HAUXXU as the 2026 50-inch QN80H Neo QLED 4K TV. It lists 3,840 × 2,160 resolution, a 50Hz display refresh rate, Quantum Mini LED contrast, HDR10+ Adaptive/Advanced, HDR10+ support, Filmmaker Mode and Tizen. If a retailer uses a different suffix, country or year, treat it as a different specification until the manufacturer’s page confirms otherwise.

For a fair comparison, write down these details for both products before looking at prices:
- Full model number and market (for example, UK or US).
- Screen size and model year.
- Number and version of HDMI inputs.
- Advertised VRR range and maximum refresh rate at the resolution you will use.
- HDR formats supported by your streaming services, console and PC.
- Current local price and return policy.
Without those details, “QN80H versus LG OLED” can accidentally compare a 50-inch UK LCD with a very different LG model from another market.
Movies: where OLED has the clearest advantage
Black level and shadow contrast
LG’s official UK buying guide describes OLED pixels as self-lighting and individually switchable, saying they can turn on and off independently to deliver very dark blacks and what LG calls “infinite contrast.” That is a description of the OLED architecture, not an independent head-to-head measurement of a particular LG set against the QN80H.

The practical implication is straightforward: in a dark film scene, an OLED pixel can be switched off while a nearby pixel remains bright. An LCD television, including a Mini LED model, uses a backlight behind the liquid-crystal panel. Mini LED divides that backlight into many zones, but each zone still covers more than one pixel. Bright objects can therefore affect nearby dark areas through blooming or raised blacks. How visible that is depends on the exact panel, local-dimming algorithm, scene and viewing environment; no matched measurement for the QE50QN80H and a named LG OLED is available here.

If your priority is night-time cinema in a dim or dark room, start with the LG OLED candidate. The reason is the pixel-level control, not a claim that every LG model wins every picture-quality category.
Brightness and reflections in a bright room
There is no directly comparable luminance or reflection test in the available specifications. Do not infer a universal bright-room winner from the words “Mini LED” or “OLED.” A television’s result depends on panel size, picture mode, anti-reflection treatment, window placement and how much ambient light reaches the screen.
For a sunlit living room, inspect the exact television in person if possible, or find a measurement for the precise model and size from a trustworthy test. Look for sustained brightness in the picture mode you will actually use, not only a short-lived highlight figure. Also check whether your seating position puts windows directly behind you; reflections can matter more than a headline brightness number.

The Samsung UK listing advertises HDR10+ Adaptive and Advanced, HDR10+ support and Filmmaker Mode. HDR10+ can be useful when the movie or service supplies HDR10+ metadata, but your source must actually provide that format.

LG’s cited material shows Dolby Vision on some LG models and lineups, but it does not establish the complete HDR format list for the particular LG OLED you may buy. Check the exact model page and the apps, disc player, console or streaming box you use. A format label is valuable only when it matches your content sources.
Picture processing and viewing position
Samsung lists its own picture processing and Filmmaker Mode on the QN80H page. Filmmaker Mode is intended to preserve a film’s original presentation rather than adding aggressive motion processing. LG OLED models also differ in processing and picture modes, so compare settings on the exact models rather than assuming every OLED behaves identically.
OLED’s self-lit design also supports consistent dark-scene contrast across the screen. For a group watching from wide seating angles, verify the panel’s measured viewing behavior for the chosen LG and Samsung models; the available product facts do not provide a matched viewing-angle test.

What the 50-inch Samsung page actually says
The QE50QN80HAUXXU page lists VRR, ALLM, Game Bar and HGiG, and states that 4K at 120Hz is supported. However, the same page lists a 50Hz display refresh rate and explicitly says:

- 4K 144Hz is available only with PC-connected content.
These statements are not a guaranteed 144Hz console specification. They indicate that Samsung’s QN80H family headline features are narrowed for this size and source. Before buying, confirm which HDMI input, resolution and picture mode deliver the refresh rate you need. If a retailer advertises “144Hz QN80H” without identifying the size and connection, ask for the exact regional specification.
What LG’s published 165Hz figure means
LG’s US 2026 gaming guide lists four HDMI 2.1 ports, ALLM and VRR up to 165Hz for specified G6 OLED models and sizes. That is useful evidence for those named G6 sets, but it cannot be generalized to every LG OLED or substituted for the specification of a C-series, B-series or another size. A different LG model may have a different maximum refresh rate, port count or VRR range.
Console checklist
PlayStation and Xbox consoles commonly target 4K at 120Hz rather than 144Hz. For either television, verify the following in the exact model’s manual and on-screen information panel:

- The television does not reserve a required feature for a different size or region.
Samsung’s 50-inch listing supports VRR and 4K/120Hz but excludes FreeSync Premium Pro at that size. For LG, use the exact model’s HDMI and VRR table rather than the G6 maximum as a category-wide promise.

PC checklist
PC gaming makes the distinction between 120Hz and 144Hz more important. Your graphics card, cable, game resolution and operating-system display settings all affect the available mode. On the Samsung, connect the PC to the input identified for the highest PC refresh rate, enable VRR in the television and graphics-driver control panel, then confirm the negotiated mode in the operating system. The product page’s 4K/144Hz statement is specifically tied to PC-connected content, while 144Hz Motion Xcelerator and FreeSync Premium Pro are marked unavailable for 50 inches.
On an LG, confirm that the selected size is one of the models covered by the published G6 figures if 165Hz matters to you. Otherwise, treat 165Hz as a G6-series example, not as an LG OLED standard.

Sound and smart features
The QN80H’s UK specification lists 30W, 2-channel audio and Dolby Atmos support. Atmos support means the television can accept or process Atmos content; it does not establish that the built-in speakers create a convincing immersive field. If film sound matters, budget and connection-plan for a soundbar or receiver only after checking the television’s audio outputs and the equipment you already own.

How to make a fair buying decision
Choose the LG OLED direction when
- You watch mainly in a dark room and care most about black scenes and shadow separation.
- You can identify a specific LG model whose brightness, ports and HDR formats fit your sources.
- Your gaming requirement matches that model’s documented HDMI and VRR modes.
Choose the Samsung direction when
- You specifically want a 50-inch Samsung Mini LED LCD and its Tizen interface.
- HDR10+ support matches your films, streaming services or playback hardware.
- You have checked the 50-inch gaming restrictions rather than relying on QN80H family advertising.
- The Samsung’s measured bright-room performance and local price suit your room better than the chosen LG OLED.
Pause the purchase when
- The LG listing does not show a full model number, size and country.
- A retailer promises 144Hz without stating whether it means PC input, console input or a different QN80H size.
- You need Dolby Vision, HDR10+ or a particular VRR mode but cannot find it in the exact model’s manual.
- The comparison uses a Samsung UK specification against an LG US specification without acknowledging the regional difference.
Pre-purchase and setup verification
- Record the exact SKUs. Photograph or copy the model suffix from the retailer and manufacturer’s page.
- Match the market. Use the specification page for the country where the television will operate; tuner, apps and features can differ.
- Check every gaming source. Look up the console or PC resolution, refresh rate, VRR and HDR combination you intend to use.
- Verify the input. Use the HDMI port identified for 4K/120Hz or the highest PC refresh mode, then enable Game Mode, VRR and ALLM as appropriate.
- Confirm the signal. After connecting, open the console or PC display information and verify the actual negotiated resolution and refresh rate rather than trusting the cable label or retailer headline.
- Test your content. Play a dark film scene, a bright daytime scene and a fast game from your normal sources. Check for reflections, blooming, motion artifacts and whether HDR engages.
- Plan audio separately. Decide whether the built-in speakers are adequate before adding equipment; Dolby Atmos support alone does not answer that question.
Verdict
For movies, a correctly identified LG OLED is the more compelling first choice when you watch in a dark room and value pixel-level black performance. For gaming, neither the generic phrase “LG OLED” nor the QN80H family name is specific enough to settle the question. The Samsung QE50QN80H 50-inch model has useful VRR and 4K/120Hz claims but also size-specific exclusions for 144Hz Motion Xcelerator and FreeSync Premium Pro, while LG’s up-to-165Hz figure applies only to specified G6 models.
The defensible purchase decision is therefore a matched comparison: Samsung QE50QN80HAUXXU or the correct local equivalent against one named LG OLED of the same size and market, using that pair’s actual HDMI, VRR, HDR, brightness and price information. If you cannot name the LG model, you do not yet have a complete head-to-head comparison.
