The Samsung HW-Q990B is the more complete package out of the box: it includes a subwoofer and separate rear speakers in an 11.1.4-channel system. The Sonos Arc is a standalone soundbar with eleven internal speakers, including two dedicated height channels; you can add other Sonos products later. The right comparison depends on whether you want a bundled surround system or a bar you can expand over time.
What do you get with each soundbar?
These products are not equivalent bundles. Samsung specifies the HW-Q990B as an 11.1.4-channel system that includes a subwoofer and rear speakers. Sonos describes Arc as a soundbar with eleven internal speakers. A Sub and surround speakers are optional additions to an Arc setup, so compare their cost and configuration separately rather than treating the standalone bar as a complete surround bundle.

Which is better for Dolby Atmos?
Both manufacturers list Dolby Atmos support, but a format logo does not by itself guarantee that your TV and source will deliver Atmos to the soundbar. Check that your television has an available HDMI ARC or eARC port, supports audio passthrough for the formats you use, and is connected to a compatible source device.

Samsung HW-Q990B
Samsung lists HDMI eARC and wireless Dolby Atmos transmission for selected 2022 Samsung TVs. That wireless feature is not a general substitute for checking compatibility: with other televisions, the connection and audio-format support of the TV and source chain still matter.
Sonos Arc
Sonos lists HDMI ARC/eARC. Its specifications identify eARC as necessary for certain formats, including Dolby TrueHD and some multichannel formats. If your television has optical audio output only, Sonos lists an optical audio adapter, but an optical connection may not carry the same formats as eARC.

How much room and placement do they require?
Arc measures 44.96 inches wide, according to Sonos. Samsung’s regional Q990B material lists a bar around 48.5 inches wide; check the exact SKU before ordering. Measure the usable width of the console or wall space, not just the TV, and make sure the bar will not obstruct the screen or remote-control sensors.

The Q990B also requires places for its separate rear speakers and subwoofer, along with access to power where needed. Arc keeps the main hardware in one bar when bought alone, although adding optional speakers and a Sub also adds placement considerations.

What setup and ecosystem features differ?
Samsung
Samsung lists Q-Symphony, which coordinates the soundbar with compatible Samsung TVs, and wireless Dolby Atmos transmission for selected 2022 Samsung televisions. Check compatibility with your specific TV model; these features should not be assumed to work across all brands or generations.

Sonos lists Trueplay room tuning, Speech Enhancement, Night Sound, and streaming integration. Trueplay requires a supported iOS device. These are software and ecosystem features rather than additional included surround speakers.

Is the Samsung Q990B worth it, or should you choose Sonos Arc?
Choose based on the system you want and the space you can support, not channel counts alone. Samsung identifies the Q990B as a 2022 product generation, so treat it as an older model rather than an automatically current flagship. Its value depends on verified local availability and price; current stock and retailer offers are not established here.
- Choose the Q990B configuration if you want a subwoofer and separate rear speakers included in the package, and you have suitable placement and power access.
- Choose Sonos Arc if you want a standalone bar with the option to expand within the Sonos system. Compare the price of any Sub or surround speakers you intend to add before weighing it against Samsung’s bundled hardware.
- Check your TV first if a particular audio format or a brand-specific feature is decisive. Confirm ARC/eARC, passthrough support, source-device output, and the compatibility requirements of the feature you want.
Samsung’s specifications describe the Q990B package; Sonos’s page describes Arc and its features. Neither establishes a controlled head-to-head listening result. Channel counts and feature lists therefore cannot prove which will sound better in a particular room.
