No: Samsung’s support guidance does not identify Power saving mode as a cause of battery damage. The feature is designed to extend the time you can use a Galaxy device between charges by reducing background activity and, depending on your settings, limiting selected features. The tradeoff is functional: performance may decrease, and some apps may update or send notifications later.
What Power saving mode changes
Power saving mode is a software setting for stretching current battery runtime, not a battery-repair or battery-lifespan setting. Samsung says the mode reduces background activity and may limit features to help a Galaxy device last longer before it needs charging. What it restricts depends on the device, software, region, and options you enable.
Possible restrictions on some configurations include turning off Always On Display, limiting CPU speed or screen brightness, disabling 5G, and limiting apps or the Home screen. Samsung’s examples are not a universal list for every Galaxy phone. Samsung Singapore describes examples of Power saving options; Samsung also notes that screens and settings can vary by country in its Canada instructions, last updated May 23, 2026.

What you may notice while it is on
The main downside is that restricted background behavior can affect how quickly apps and features work. Samsung warns that some tasks may take longer to complete or update, and background apps may not receive updates or send notifications while Power saving mode is enabled. Depending on the active options, background access to Wi-Fi or mobile data—and location services—may also be limited.

That means a messaging, email, navigation, or other app that needs timely background activity could behave differently. If an app’s alerts or updates matter, check whether it is restricted and whether your Galaxy’s Power saving options allow the background activity it needs. The exact controls depend on the model and software. Power saving mode is not the same as Battery protection
Power saving mode aims to give you more use from the charge you already have. Battery protection addresses charging behavior, which Samsung discusses separately in its battery-care guidance. Samsung UK says that keeping a battery at 100% for a long period can reduce its lifespan and describes Battery protection controls; this is not a warning about Power saving mode. The Galaxy S23 series manual likewise lists Power saving and Protect battery as separate settings, but menus and controls can differ across models.

Use Power saving mode when getting more runtime matters more than immediate background updates or full performance—for example, when you cannot charge soon. It is reversible, so you can turn it off if an app or feature is not behaving as you need.

- Open your Galaxy phone’s Settings and go to Battery or the battery controls within Device care. The route and label vary by model and software.
- Open Power saving and switch it off. If a particular app is the problem, review the available app or background-activity restrictions rather than assuming every Galaxy device has the same controls.
Samsung’s device instructions cover Power saving alongside separate options such as Maximum power saving, sleeping apps, Light performance mode, and Device care; availability and menu names vary by device and country.
