You can change the background effect after taking a photo in Portrait mode on a compatible Samsung Galaxy phone. Open the image in Samsung Gallery and look for its background-effect editing control. If the image was taken in ordinary Photo mode, an “Add Portrait Effect” option may appear on some devices, but Samsung does not document it as a universal feature.
Edit the background effect on a Portrait mode photo

Open the picture in the Samsung Gallery app.

Look in the photo view for a control to edit the background effect. Depending on the Gallery version, you may find it by tapping the photo’s Details or information icon (i) and checking the available suggestions or background-effect controls.

Adjust the available effect and save your changes using the controls shown on your phone.

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold6 user guide says, “You can also apply a background effect and edit it after taking a picture.” The documented editing applies to pictures captured in Portrait mode; the guide does not promise that every Galaxy model or Gallery version has identical controls.

Can you add the effect to a regular photo?
Possibly, but it depends on the device and software. A Samsung Members community post reports a Gallery option called “Add Portrait Effect” for an ordinary photo with a person in it. That community report is not confirmation of current, universal support. If the option is missing, the available official guidance does not establish a workaround that applies to all Galaxy phones.
Portrait effect is not the same as Portrait Studio
Changing background blur or another background effect is different from using Portrait Studio. Portrait Studio applies AI-generated visual styles, such as cartoon or painting looks, rather than simply adjusting background blur. Samsung says Portrait Studio requires Android 14 and One UI 6.1.1 or higher, with availability varying by device and software version. See Samsung’s Portrait Studio guidance for its feature details.

Why the control may be missing

The photo was not taken in Portrait mode. Samsung documents post-capture background-effect editing for Portrait mode pictures. An option for ordinary photos is not guaranteed.

Your model or software version differs. Samsung notes that features, settings, and menu options can vary by device and software version. Check whether a software update is available, then look again in Gallery. Samsung’s support guidance describes this variation.

The original image did not separate the subject clearly from the background. Samsung says blur may not apply properly in insufficient light, while the device or subject is moving, or when the subject is thin, transparent, similar in colour to the background, or when the subject or background is plain. Editing cannot be assumed to restore clean separation in every image. See the Galaxy Z Fold6 user guide.
If the photo was taken in regular Photo mode and no portrait-effect option appears, check your Galaxy model and software version before looking for device-specific instructions. The available Samsung guidance does not establish one universal Gallery path for adding blur to ordinary photos.
