To back up new Samsung photos to OneDrive, use Camera backup in the OneDrive app—not Samsung Gallery sync. Microsoft ended direct Samsung Gallery syncing on September 30, 2026. Photos and videos already uploaded remain in OneDrive, but they no longer appear in Samsung Gallery through the old connection.
Set up OneDrive Camera backup on your Samsung device
Microsoft’s current workflow uses the OneDrive app to upload newly captured photos and videos. The documented menu path is below; labels can vary by app version, Android version, and locale.
- Open the OneDrive app on your Samsung phone or tablet.
- Sign in to the Microsoft account where you want the backup stored. It may be different from your Samsung account.
- Tap your account profile in the upper-left area, then choose Camera backup.
- Confirm the correct Microsoft account and turn Camera backup on.
- When prompted, allow OneDrive to access photos and videos. Microsoft advises allowing access to all photos and videos for background backup to work correctly.
- Check that the account has available storage quota and the device has an internet connection.
Once enabled with the required access, Camera backup uploads new photos and videos automatically. If the menu label differs, look in the OneDrive app’s account or profile settings for Camera backup.

| Approach | What it did or does | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Former Samsung Gallery sync | Linked Samsung Gallery with the OneDrive Gallery folder and mirrored changes, including deletions. | Discontinued September 30, 2026. Historical availability varied by device, carrier, market, and account type. Microsoft’s transition guidance and Samsung Australia’s notice describe the cutoff. |
| OneDrive Camera backup | Uploads new photos and videos from the device through the OneDrive app. | Requires the intended Microsoft account, photo and video access, available quota, and connectivity. See Microsoft’s setup instructions. |
Microsoft’s transition notice also says new users could no longer link Samsung Gallery to OneDrive starting May 1, 2026. That earlier restriction and the September 30 end date are service-change milestones; the current setup for new uploads is Camera backup.

Find photos that were already in OneDrive
Files already stored in OneDrive remain there and can still be viewed or downloaded using the OneDrive app or onedrive.com. Their disappearance from Samsung Gallery after the cutoff does not mean OneDrive deleted them. Microsoft says existing cloud files remain safe and unchanged; Samsung Australia also said previously synced photos and videos remain accessible in OneDrive.
If you want a cloud-stored image to appear inside Samsung Gallery again, that is a separate local-download and display task. The transition guidance identifies OneDrive as the place to continue viewing and managing those files; it does not say the former Gallery link can be restored.

Know how the old sync handled deletions
The discontinued Gallery integration was a two-way sync: changes made in Samsung Gallery or in the linked OneDrive Gallery folder could be reflected on the other side, including deletions. Microsoft’s warning applies to that legacy connection. Do not assume Camera backup has identical deletion behavior; the current transition instructions describe it as a replacement upload workflow, not as the same two-way sync. Before deleting an item that was synced through the old setup, confirm an original copy exists where you intend to keep it. See Microsoft’s legacy sync guidance.

Historical Samsung instructions used Gallery > Menu > Settings > Sync with OneDrive or Cloud sync, followed by Microsoft account sign-in. Samsung’s US guidance described personal OneDrive accounts, while Microsoft said the legacy feature was limited to certain carriers, device models, and markets and did not support work or school accounts. Those differences explain why older guides and menu labels may not match across devices; they do not change the discontinuation date. Use the OneDrive app’s Camera backup setting for new uploads. Troubleshoot photos missing from OneDrive
Check these items in order when a newly taken photo does not appear in the cloud:
- Microsoft account: In OneDrive, confirm Camera backup is using the account where you expect to find the file.
- Camera backup setting: Open the profile menu and verify Camera backup is turned on.
- Photo and video permission: Check Android’s app permissions for OneDrive and grant the required access. Microsoft recommends access to all photos and videos for background backup.
- Storage quota: Make sure the Microsoft account has room available. Exceeding the quota can prevent uploads.
- Internet connection: Check that the device is online and has a strong connection.
- Existing library location: For older files that used to show in Samsung Gallery, check OneDrive or onedrive.com; the discontinued link no longer displays them in Gallery.
Microsoft’s current transition and troubleshooting information is available in its Samsung Gallery and OneDrive changes guide.
