To back up photos and videos on a Samsung Galaxy, use Google Photos or OneDrive camera roll backup for an automatic cloud copy, or use Samsung Smart Switch to make a local backup on a PC or a compatible SD card. Samsung Gallery’s direct OneDrive sync ended on September 30, 2026; existing OneDrive files remain available, but new uploads need to be set up through the OneDrive app. Check that a recent photo is visible in the destination before deleting files or resetting your device.

Choose where your Samsung photos will be backed up

The right method depends on whether you want an ongoing cloud upload or a separate local copy. Cloud services need an account and internet access; Smart Switch creates a local backup session. You can use more than one destination for photos that would be difficult to replace.

Method Backup type What to check
Google Photos Automatic cloud backup of photos and videos Correct Google account, backup status, and available account storage
OneDrive camera roll backup Automatic cloud upload through the OneDrive app Correct Microsoft account and camera roll backup setting
Smart Switch to a PC Local backup session; Samsung lists photos among transferable data PC connection, completion status, and access to the backup
Smart Switch to an SD card Local backup session on supported devices Whether your exact Galaxy model accepts an SD card and the card’s capacity
Samsung Cloud Backup of selected Galaxy data and settings Which items your device and region support; do not assume it includes the whole photo library

Samsung and Microsoft instructions note that menus and supported features can differ by model, software version, country, and carrier. Follow the closest matching options on your device. Samsung’s overview of backup methods is at Methods to Back Up and Restore Data to Galaxy Devices.

Back up Samsung photos to Google Photos

Google Photos is a cloud option for keeping photos and videos with your Google account. Samsung’s Gallery support page describes Google backup controls through Galaxy settings, but menu names can vary. You can also inspect backup status directly in the Google Photos app.

Keep backing up to OneDrive after Gallery sync ended

Samsung Gallery’s direct sync with OneDrive ended on September 30, 2026. Microsoft says that files already backed up remain accessible through OneDrive.com and OneDrive apps, even though they no longer appear in Samsung Gallery after the change. To continue uploading new photos and videos to OneDrive, use camera roll backup in the OneDrive app—not a newly enabled Gallery sync.

Make a local backup with Smart Switch

Smart Switch can back up Galaxy data to a PC or, on supported devices, an SD card. Samsung lists photos among the transferable data, but the available screens and data can differ by model and software version. A local backup can complement cloud storage and does not depend on completing a cloud upload.

Samsung’s Smart Switch guide covers PC and SD card backups and notes model and software variation: How to transfer and backup data using Smart Switch on a Galaxy phone.

Know what Samsung Cloud does—and what it may not

Samsung Cloud backs up selected Galaxy data and settings, but its supported items depend on country, carrier, operating system, and phone version. Inspect the backup categories on your device rather than assuming Samsung Cloud includes every photo in Gallery.

Samsung says automatic backup in the described flow requires the device to be charging, the screen off, and Wi-Fi connected. It also says files larger than 1 GB cannot be backed up through that flow. Check the categories and conditions shown on your own device before relying on Samsung Cloud for photos. See Samsung’s Samsung Cloud backup and restore guide.

Verify the backup before deleting or resetting anything

A backup is useful only if the copy exists and you can access it. After the initial upload or local backup session, check the destination separately:
