Samsung phone volume problems usually come down to the wrong sound channel, a mute or routing setting, an obstructed opening, or a fault with a button or speaker. Identify what is silent first—media, calls, ringtone, or notifications—then follow the matching checks below. Samsung notes that menu names and layouts vary by model and software version; use Settings search if a path does not match your phone.
First identify which sound is affected
Galaxy phones control media, ringtone, notification, system, and in-call volume separately. A side-button press may change a different channel than you expect, and call volume is adjusted while a call is active.
- Media is quiet: Play a video or song and check its playback volume.
- The other caller is quiet: Test a call at the earpiece and on speakerphone.
- Calls do not ring: Check ringtone volume, sound mode, and call-specific settings.
- Notifications are silent: Check notification volume, Do not disturb, and the app’s own notification settings.
- The volume key does not work: Check for obstruction or a stuck button and test it with Samsung Members diagnostics.
Try more than one audio source. If sound works through headphones but not the phone’s speaker, that points toward a different cause than silence across every output.

For calls
Make or answer a test call, then press Volume up while the call is active. This changes in-call volume; changing media volume before or after the call may not.

For media, ringtone, and notifications
For media, start playback and adjust its slider. To raise ringtone volume, stop media playback and disconnect headphones first: Samsung notes that active media or connected headphones can prevent the side buttons from raising ringtone volume.
For separate controls, open Settings > Sounds and vibration > Volume and inspect the available sliders. The exact labels can differ by device and software version.
Check mute, sound mode, and interruption settings
Sound mode and Mute all sounds
Open Settings > Sounds and vibration and check whether the phone is set to Sound, Vibrate, or Mute. Also check Settings > Accessibility > Hearing enhancements > Mute all sounds. When Mute all sounds is enabled, it can silence all audio, including the other caller’s voice, and Samsung says volume cannot be adjusted while it is on.

Do not disturb and Modes and Routines
Check Settings > Notifications > Do not disturb, including its schedule and exceptions. Do not disturb can allow configured exceptions, so inspect those settings if you want to keep it enabled but expect calls or alerts to sound.
Also check Settings > Modes and Routines for a mode such as Sleep or Relax that may have changed sound behavior. If incoming calls are specifically not arriving, check Airplane mode as well.
Check where audio is being routed
Sound may be playing through a connected device rather than the phone’s built-in speaker. Disconnect wired headphones and temporarily turn Bluetooth off, then test again. If only one app sends sound to an unexpected output, check Settings > Sounds and vibration > Separate app sound, if available.

Check the app’s own volume and tone settings, too. A custom ringtone or notification set inside a third-party calling or messaging app is not necessarily controlled by the phone’s default ringtone setting.
Inspect the receiver, speakers, and accessories
Temporarily remove a case if it covers a speaker, microphone, receiver, or vent. Check whether a screen protector covers the earpiece. The openings vary by model, so identify the layout of your exact phone before removing or replacing an accessory. Samsung says blocked vents can cause crackling or low sound on some models.
If the phone is wet, power it off and dry its exterior with a soft, clean cloth. Samsung’s regional guidance advises against heat or salt water. Do not put sharp objects or liquids into the phone’s openings.

Restart, update, and check for app conflicts
- Restart the phone. A restart can clear a temporary software problem. The button combination varies; Samsung documents holding Side and Volume down for more than 7 seconds to restart certain devices, not every Galaxy model.
- Install available updates. Check for phone software and relevant app updates, then test the same sound again.
- Use Safe mode if the issue began after installing an app. Test audio in Safe mode. If the problem disappears, investigate recently downloaded apps one by one. If it remains, a downloaded app may not be the cause.
Test volume keys and choose the right next step
If a key feels stuck, does not click normally, or fails to respond, check that the case is not pressing or blocking it. Samsung Members can run diagnostics for physical buttons. Samsung’s Singapore support guidance also recommends checking for obstruction and updating the software before considering a settings reset.
If the phone still has a volume or sound problem after the checks above, consider Settings > General management > Reset > Reset all settings, if that path is available on your device. Samsung says this reset does not delete personal data, but you will need to review preferences afterward.

It erases data, so back up the phone first. If you proceed, test sound before restoring apps so you can tell whether the original problem has returned.
Contact Samsung support or an appropriate service provider if diagnostics indicate a hardware fault, a button is stuck, the phone has liquid damage, or sound remains faulty after the software and routing checks. Avoid opening the phone or attempting a generic repair when the cause has not been diagnosed.
