To dictate on a Samsung Galaxy phone, open an app with a text field, tap that field to display the keyboard, then choose the keyboard’s voice-input or microphone control. On the Galaxy Z Fold6 interface documented by Samsung, that control is selected from the keyboard button on the navigation bar. Speak, check the inserted words, and then edit, save, or send the text.

If the microphone control is missing, enable Keyboard button on navigation bar under Settings > General management > Keyboard list and default. The exact controls can differ with Galaxy model, One UI version, carrier, region, selected keyboard, and input language.

What dictation on a Samsung phone actually does

Keyboard dictation converts speech into text in the text field that currently has focus. You can use it in a message, email, note, search box, form, document, or another app that accepts keyboard input. It is an input method, not an audio recording feature: the result should appear as editable characters in the field.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The control may not be drawn directly inside the Samsung Keyboard. In the Galaxy Z Fold6 EU English user manual, Samsung shows a keyboard button on the navigation bar that lets you change text-input methods; selecting the microphone or voice-entry option starts dictation. Other Galaxy phones and software versions may place the selector elsewhere or use a different keyboard.

Samsung’s manual also warns that “Some features may not be available depending on the carrier or model.” Treat the Z Fold6 procedure below as a documented example, not a promise that every Galaxy device has identical labels or locations.

Before you start

  • Use a Galaxy phone with a keyboard available and an app that contains an editable text field.
  • Connect to the network conditions required by the voice-input method you have selected. The supplied Samsung documentation does not establish a universal offline mode, so do not assume dictation will work without the service or language resources your phone uses.
  • Choose an input language supported by the selected keyboard. Samsung states that text entry is not supported in some languages and directs users to select a supported input language.
  • Keep the microphone opening clear. A case, protective film, or debris can interfere with speech recognition.
  • Install available software updates and restart the phone if voice recognition behaves unexpectedly.

How to dictate with Samsung Keyboard

1. Open a text field

Launch the app where you want the words to go. Tap the message area, note body, search field, or other editable box. The on-screen keyboard must appear before you can choose a keyboard input method.

2. Open the input-method selector

On the Galaxy Z Fold6 interface described in Samsung’s EU English user manual, tap the keyboard button on the navigation bar. Select the microphone or voice-entry option. The button is a way to change text input methods, so it may not look like a microphone until the selector is open.

If your phone shows a microphone icon directly on the keyboard, tapping that icon may begin the same kind of keyboard dictation. Because Samsung changes layouts between models and One UI releases, follow the label shown on your device rather than assuming the Z Fold6 arrangement is universal.

3. Speak at a normal pace

With voice entry active, say the words you want inserted into the focused field. Pause briefly when you need punctuation or a change of thought, then watch the text appear. Dictation is most useful when you keep the phone’s microphone unobstructed and speak clearly enough for the selected language.

4. Review before using the text

Read the transcription in the field. Correct names, numbers, punctuation, capitalization, and words that sound alike before you send a message, save a note, submit a form, or publish anything. Samsung’s documentation establishes the voice-entry control but does not promise a universal transcription-accuracy percentage or identical behavior on every model.

If the keyboard button or microphone is missing

Enable the navigation-bar keyboard button

  1. Settings
  2. General management
  3. Keyboard list and default
  4. Turn on Keyboard button on navigation bar.

Return to a text field and check the navigation bar again. If your phone does not use these exact labels, search Settings for “keyboard button,” “input method,” or “keyboard list,” then inspect the keyboard and navigation options shown for that software version. The menu path can vary by model, One UI version, carrier, region, and selected keyboard.

Check which keyboard is selected

Voice input belongs to a keyboard or input method. If you have changed from Samsung Keyboard to another keyboard, its microphone control and settings may be different. Open the keyboard’s own settings or the device’s default-keyboard page and confirm which keyboard is active before troubleshooting a missing Samsung control.

Do not confuse an app’s recording button with dictation

Some apps display a microphone for recording an audio message. That control records or sends sound; it does not necessarily place recognized words into the active text field. For text dictation, first tap the editable field and then use the keyboard’s voice-input method.

Google voice typing on a Galaxy device

Samsung also documents Google voice typing on Galaxy tablets. Its tablet support instructions say to open an app that uses the keyboard, tap the microphone icon, and speak. The same article lists customization under Settings > Language and input > On-screen keyboard > Google voice typing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those instructions are tablet-focused, so use them as evidence that Samsung supports Google voice typing on Galaxy devices, not as a guaranteed phone menu path. On a phone, the wording and location can differ. If you select Google voice typing as the active input method, look for its microphone control after tapping a text field and consult the options shown on your own device.

Question Samsung Keyboard voice input Google voice typing
Where does dictation start? On the documented Z Fold6 interface, through the navigation-bar keyboard button and its microphone or voice-entry option; some models show a keyboard microphone directly. Samsung’s tablet guidance starts from the microphone icon after opening an app that uses the keyboard.
What must be selected? Samsung Keyboard or its voice-entry option must be available as the active input method. Google voice typing must be available and selected in the device’s keyboard settings.
Are settings identical on every Galaxy device? No. Samsung states that features can vary by carrier or model, and the manual’s path is specific to its documented interface. No. The cited instructions are for Galaxy tablets and should not be treated as a universal phone path.
Language support Use an input language supported by the keyboard; Samsung says some languages do not support text entry. Availability depends on the languages and options exposed by Google voice typing on that device.
Accuracy, latency, privacy, or offline ranking Not established by the cited Samsung documentation. Not established by the cited Samsung documentation.

Neither set of Samsung sources supplies a fair head-to-head test of accuracy, delay, privacy, or offline behavior. Choose based on which keyboard is already configured, where its controls appear, and whether it offers the input language you need rather than relying on an unsupported performance ranking.

Language, model, and regional limits

Voice-input menus are not guaranteed to match across the Galaxy range. A foldable phone, tablet, and conventional phone can use different navigation layouts; a carrier build can expose different features; and a One UI update can move a setting. The safest procedure is to begin from a focused text field and inspect the active keyboard’s input-method controls.

Language support is equally important. If a language is unavailable for text entry, switching microphones or repeating the same phrase will not solve the problem. Open the keyboard’s language list, select a supported input language, and then try dictation again. Do not assume that every language offered for the keyboard has identical voice-recognition support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold6 manual is an EU English document whose PDF revision filename indicates 2024-08-14. It is useful for identifying the documented control, but its labels should be treated as an example when your phone uses another regional build or software release.

Troubleshooting weak or failed recognition

The microphone icon is not visible

  1. Tap an editable text field so the keyboard is definitely open.
  2. Check the navigation bar for the keyboard button or input-method selector.
  3. If it is absent, open Settings > General management > Keyboard list and default and enable Keyboard button on navigation bar when that option exists.
  4. Confirm which keyboard is selected and open that keyboard’s input settings.
  5. Check that the language selected for text entry is supported.

These checks address the documented Samsung control. They cannot guarantee that another model or software version uses the same path.

Speech is recognized poorly

  • Inspect the microphone opening and remove debris. Samsung advises checking for blockage from dirt, a cover, or protective film.
  • Move to a quieter location and speak clearly while keeping the phone’s microphone unobstructed.
  • Install pending software updates, then restart the phone.
  • Verify that the keyboard’s input language matches the language you are speaking.
  • Review the inserted text instead of sending or saving it immediately; recognition quality is not a substitute for proofreading.

The Samsung troubleshooting guidance used for these checks concerns calls and voice-command recognition broadly, not a dedicated Samsung Keyboard dictation fault. It therefore provides reasonable microphone diagnostics, not proof that every dictation failure has the same cause.

Dictation works in Safe mode but not normally

Samsung recommends testing microphone behavior in Safe mode when a third-party app may be interfering. If recognition works in Safe mode and fails during a normal start, an installed app could be involved. Remove or disable recently installed apps one at a time, restart normally, and test after each change. Safe mode is a diagnostic comparison, not a guarantee that a particular app is responsible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Only one app fails

Try dictation in a second app with a basic editable text field. If the microphone works elsewhere, inspect the problem app’s permissions, keyboard choice, and text-entry behavior. A recording control inside that app is not evidence that keyboard dictation is enabled there.

The phone does not recognize the requested language

Open the active keyboard’s language settings and choose a supported input language. If the language is not offered for text entry, Samsung’s documentation indicates that the keyboard cannot provide text entry for it on that configuration. Carrier, model, and regional differences can affect which choices appear.

Keyboard dictation versus Bixby messaging

Keyboard dictation puts spoken words into whichever text field is focused. Bixby messaging is a different workflow: you can ask Bixby to compose a text message for a contact rather than manually opening a field and selecting a keyboard input method.

Samsung says Bixby does not automatically send the dictated message. Review the composed message and tap Send yourself. Samsung also notes that Bixby messaging may not work when Samsung Messages is not the default messaging app. If Google Messages is used, Samsung specifies that the Text on Galaxy devices option must be enabled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use keyboard dictation when you need speech-to-text in any compatible field, such as a note, search box, form, or email. Consider the Bixby workflow only when your goal is specifically to compose a message for a contact and your messaging-app configuration meets those requirements.

A practical dictation routine

  1. Open the destination app and tap the exact field that should receive text.
  2. Confirm that the expected keyboard appears.
  3. Open the keyboard’s microphone or voice-entry control, using the navigation-bar keyboard button if your interface places it there.
  4. Speak one sentence or phrase at a time, watching for obvious recognition errors.
  5. Pause and edit names, numbers, punctuation, and sensitive information.
  6. Only after proofreading, send, save, or submit the text.

This routine prevents the most common category error: starting an audio recording when the goal is editable text. It also keeps the final decision—sending or saving—under your control.

What Samsung’s documentation does and does not establish

The cited Samsung materials establish that Galaxy devices can offer keyboard-based voice input, that the Z Fold6 example exposes it through a navigation-bar keyboard button, and that Google voice typing is documented as an alternative on Galaxy tablets. They also provide microphone checks such as clearing obstructions, updating software, restarting, and trying Safe mode.

They do not establish one universal menu path for every Galaxy phone, a complete supported-language list, a guaranteed transcription-accuracy rate, a universal offline mode, or a winner between Samsung Keyboard and Google voice typing on accuracy, speed, or privacy. Those details depend on the device and configuration shown on your own screen.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I dictate into a note or search box, not just a text message?

Yes. Keyboard dictation works wherever the app presents an editable text field and the selected keyboard offers voice input. Tap that field first so the keyboard and its input controls appear.

Why does the Samsung manual’s menu path look different from my phone?

The documented path comes from a Galaxy Z Fold6 EU English interface. Samsung says feature availability can depend on the carrier or model, and One UI, region, and selected keyboard can change labels and locations.

Does Bixby send a dictated message automatically?

No. Samsung says you review the message and tap Send. Bixby messaging also has specific default-messaging-app requirements.
