If your Samsung Galaxy is locked to a mobile network, ask the carrier or retailer that originally supplied it to check whether it qualifies for an unlock. Whether unlocking is free depends on that provider’s policy and your phone’s eligibility. A factory reset will not remove a network lock—and can erase your data.
First, identify what “locked” means
Samsung phones can display different kinds of locks, and each has a different solution. A new SIM that triggers a network-unlock message points to the original carrier or retailer. A request for a PIN, pattern, or password is a screen-lock issue. A request for the Google account previously used on the phone after a reset is Google Factory Reset Protection (FRP), an ownership check.
- Carrier or network lock: The phone is restricted to a provider’s network. Samsung’s guidance is to contact the provider or retailer that supplied it. Samsung: Why is my Galaxy phone network locked?
- Screen lock: You cannot get past the phone’s PIN, pattern, or password. This is not a carrier unlock; a reset may be necessary if no configured remote-unlock method is available.
- Google FRP: After a reset, Android may ask for the Google account previously associated with the device. This is not a carrier lock. Samsung: Google device protection on your Samsung Galaxy
How to request a free carrier unlock
- Check the exact prompt. If inserting another provider’s SIM produces a network-lock message, treat it as a carrier issue. A SIM-card PIN prompt is different; Samsung covers SIM PINs and network unlock codes separately in its SIM and network-unlock guidance.
- Contact the original provider or retailer. Samsung says it does not lock devices to a particular network and directs customers to the original provider or retailer for network unlocking. Ask that provider to check eligibility and explain its process.
- Have the requested details ready. The provider may ask for account and device information. Share an IMEI only through an appropriate private channel, not a public forum.
- Check compatibility before switching. An unlocked phone is not guaranteed to work with every carrier. Ask the destination carrier whether it supports your exact Galaxy model and its network bands. See Samsung’s guidance on moving a Galaxy phone to a different service carrier.
- Follow the provider’s instructions and test the new service. After the unlock is completed, test with the new SIM or eSIM as directed. A factory reset is not part of Samsung’s stated network-unlock route.
When is a Samsung phone unlock free?
There is no single free-unlock rule for every Samsung phone. Requirements are set by the carrier, and providers may unlock eligible devices for free, charge, or not offer unlocking. Check with the provider that supplied your handset rather than assuming another carrier’s policy applies.
T-Mobile US as one policy example
T-Mobile’s US SIM Unlock Policy says eligible devices are unlocked free of charge. Its general criteria include that the device was sold by T-Mobile, is not reported lost, stolen, or blocked, and is associated with an account in good standing; additional plan-specific requirements apply. For postpaid service, the policy lists at least 40 days active on T-Mobile’s network on the requesting line. These are T-Mobile US policy terms, not universal Samsung or carrier requirements, and T-Mobile says its policy may change without notice. Check the current T-Mobile SIM Unlock Policy before relying on them.

Why a factory reset is not a network unlock
A reset addresses device access or software state; it does not replace the original carrier’s network-unlock process. Samsung warns that a factory reset deletes personal data stored on the phone, so back up what you can first. A reset through Recovery may also trigger Google FRP, which asks for the Google account previously registered on the device. If the phone is asking for a screen code or Google account
Forgotten PIN, pattern, or password
This is a screen-access problem, not a carrier restriction. If no remote unlock method was configured and a reset is required, consider the data-loss consequences before proceeding. Samsung’s factory-reset instructions explain the reset route.

Google account requested after reset
Enter the Google account previously associated with the phone. If you cannot verify the account, Samsung points owners to support or an authorized service center; proof of purchase may be appropriate. Do not confuse this ownership check with a network unlock.
Can you unlock a Samsung phone without the original carrier?
For a carrier network lock, Samsung’s documented route is to contact the original provider or retailer. If you cannot reach them, Samsung support may help clarify where to direct the request, but the available guidance does not establish a universal alternative process. Avoid treating unofficial unlock-code services as guaranteed solutions, and do not attempt to bypass FRP.
