For a straightforward copy to a Windows laptop, connect your unlocked Samsung Galaxy phone with a data-capable USB cable, allow access if prompted, select Transferring files or MTP on the phone, then copy files from the phone in File Explorer. This is a manual copy; you do not need Smart Switch for ordinary files.
Transfer files with a USB cable and File Explorer
- Connect the phone. Unlock your Galaxy and connect it directly to the laptop with a USB cable that supports data transfer. Samsung notes that some cables only charge. Match the cable ends to the ports on both devices; Samsung gives USB-C-to-USB-C and USB-A-to-USB-C as examples. Samsung’s cable guidance is for Australian variant devices, so check your own model and region.
- Allow file access and select the USB mode. Tap Allow if the phone asks for permission to access data. If no prompt appears, open the phone’s notification shade, tap the USB connection notification, and choose Transferring files or MTP. The exact wording can vary by model and software.
- Open the phone on Windows. Launch File Explorer and select the phone from the sidebar or connected devices. Browse its internal storage to find the files you want.
- Copy the files. Select the items and copy them into a folder on the laptop. Keep the phone connected until the copy finishes; do not unplug it during an active transfer.
Samsung’s US guide describes this drag-and-drop workflow as supporting up to 100 files at a time, with a maximum individual file size of 512 MB. It also says that the described method does not move entire folders and leaves the phone’s original photos unchanged. These are limits and behavior for that documented workflow, not guarantees for every Galaxy model, software version, or transfer method. Samsung’s US guide to sharing and transferring files with Windows has the details.
If Windows charges the phone but shows no files
Charging alone does not confirm that the cable and connection are ready for file transfer. Check these causes in order:

- Unlock the phone and tap Allow if an access prompt appears.
- Open the USB notification and change the connection mode to Transferring files or MTP.
- Check that both cable ends are fully seated, then try a different USB port on the laptop.
- Try another cable known to carry data. Samsung Support explicitly cautions: “Not all USB cables can transfer data.” Samsung’s Australian cable troubleshooting page also describes reinstalling the device driver through Smart Switch for some detection problems.
Choose a different transfer method when it fits better
A cable is usually the simplest option for a one-time manual copy to Windows. Other routes are useful for different goals:

| Frequent access to recent phone images on Windows | Link to Windows | Samsung describes it as a way to sync and display recent images. Availability depends on the phone and its software; it is not the same as browsing and copying any file you choose. |

| Send a file over Bluetooth | Bluetooth | Samsung documents a Windows receive-file workflow, but warns that Bluetooth transfers may be slow and unreliable. |

| Keep a cloud copy or access files across devices | Cloud storage | This requires the relevant account and app, network access, and enough available storage. |
Samsung’s pages for Windows sharing options, Smart Switch, and Smart Switch compatibility describe availability and supported workflows. Check the current instructions for your device before relying on a feature or menu label.

The detailed ordinary file-browsing steps above are for Windows File Explorer. Samsung supports Smart Switch backup and restore workflows for compatible Windows and Mac computers, but that does not establish that ordinary file copying follows the same steps in Mac Finder. Samsung lists Chromebook as incompatible with the Smart Switch computer app. For Mac file browsing or Chromebook alternatives, check current guidance for the particular phone, computer, and software rather than assuming Windows instructions apply.
