To take better pictures with a Samsung phone, start with the basics: clean the camera glass, find helpful light, choose the right lens, tap to focus, and hold the phone steady. Use Photo mode for most everyday scenes, Night mode for dim scenes with little movement, and Pro mode only when manual control solves a specific problem. Galaxy camera menus and features differ by model and software version, so the names and paths below may not match every phone.

How do I take better pictures with my Samsung phone?

  1. Clean the lens. Wipe fingerprints, dust, and smudges from the camera glass; residue can make glare more noticeable, especially around bright lights. Samsung’s camera troubleshooting guide lists lens cleanliness among factors that affect image quality.
  2. Look at the light before framing. Favor soft or indirect light where possible. If a bright lamp, window, or the sun is shining directly into the lens, shift your angle; strong direct light can cause glare and make parts of an image too bright or too dark.
  3. Choose a camera lens for the composition. Select the phone’s available standard or ultra-wide camera when it fits the scene rather than relying on heavy digital zoom. Lens choices vary by model; Samsung’s Galaxy camera app guide explains lens selection on supported phones.
  4. Focus deliberately. Tap the subject on screen if the camera offers touch focus. If the result is soft, check focus, shooting distance, subject movement, and whether the phone moved before assuming the camera is faulty.
  5. Steady the phone. Hold it with both hands and pause as the shutter fires. For a long exposure, use a stable surface or tripod; a timer or remote shutter can reduce movement caused by pressing the shutter.
  6. Take another frame when the moment matters. A second shot gives you another chance if the subject blinks or moves during capture.

Which Galaxy camera mode should I use?

Approach Best fit Trade-off or requirement
Photo Everyday scenes and quick shots The camera automatically adjusts settings; manual control is limited.
Night Dim scenes where the subject is mostly still Capture may take longer, and movement during multi-frame processing can make a subject less sharp.
Pro A scene that needs a deliberate exposure, focus, or color adjustment You must choose settings and manage their trade-offs; controls differ by phone.
Expert RAW Supported phones and photographers intending to edit RAW files Requires a compatible device and a more involved editing workflow.

Start with Photo mode unless you have a reason to change it. Samsung describes Photo mode as automatically adjusting options to the surroundings, though resolution and available modes depend on the device. Check your Camera app if a mode or control described here is missing.

When does Night mode help?

Try Night mode for a dim, mostly still scene. Samsung says the mode combines multiple images; its support page describes combining 30 images, but that is a description of Samsung’s processing method, not a guarantee of the same result on every Galaxy phone. Keep the phone still through the on-screen capture timer and until the capture finishes. A moving person, pet, or vehicle can still blur while the phone combines frames.

Night mode’s location varies. It may appear under More on some phones, while supported newer software may place Night shot controls within Photo mode. Samsung also documents a One UI 8.5 interface change that can integrate Night mode into Photo mode and, on supported setups, offers a setting to restore it as a separate mode. If you cannot find it, check your phone’s Camera app and software rather than assuming the feature is absent.

What does Pro mode change?

On supported Galaxy cameras, Pro mode can expose controls such as ISO, shutter speed, exposure value, focus, and white balance. Use a manual adjustment only when it serves the scene: a faster shutter can help freeze movement, while a slower shutter can brighten a stationary scene but makes blur from subject or camera movement more likely. Raising ISO can help in low light, but Samsung warns that higher ISO can add image noise.

Pro mode is not automatically better than Photo mode. It asks you to make decisions that automatic exposure usually handles for you. If the automatic result is already suitable—or the scene is moving quickly—staying in Photo mode is often the more practical choice.

When is Expert RAW worth using?

Expert RAW is an optional workflow for supported Galaxy phones when you want more editing latitude and are prepared to work with RAW files. Samsung says the app is available for Galaxy S20 and later, can be downloaded from Galaxy Store, and saves both JPEG and 16-bit Linear DNG RAW. Availability of the app and specific features depends on the exact model and software; check Samsung’s Expert RAW support page before planning a particular workflow.

Samsung describes astrophotography and multiple-exposure options for narrower combinations of devices, software, and settings. Those special options are available only at 12 MP according to the same support information. Expert RAW adds little value if you do not intend to edit DNG files; for a quick share, the ordinary Photo workflow is simpler.

How can I photograph a night sky or other still scene?

For a stationary scene where you want a long exposure, Pro mode may give you more control than Night mode. Samsung photographer Marilyn Hue describes particular photographs made with an 8-second shutter, ISO 50, white balance 4300, and focus at infinity, as well as another 30-second exposure. These are settings from specific photographs, not universal recommendations; the right exposure depends on the scene and phone. Hue, quoted by Samsung, says, “In low-light photography, we are able to see intense colors as well as fine detail that our eyes cannot.” Samsung’s low-light photography guide provides the examples.

Long exposures require the phone to stay still. Samsung recommends a tripod and remote or timed shutter for night-sky photography. A timer helps avoid movement from tapping the screen; for some shots, a stable surface may be enough. This is optional gear for a specific technique, not a requirement for everyday photos.

How do I fix common Samsung camera problems?

Blurry or soft pictures

  • Clean the camera glass, tap the subject to focus, and check whether you are too close for the selected camera.
  • Consider whether the subject moved or the phone shifted during capture. Stabilize the phone for Night mode or a long exposure.

Dark, washed-out, or uneven exposure

  • Change your angle to a strong light source and look for indirect light.
  • If the automatic exposure is unsuitable, adjust exposure in a mode that offers the control. Difficult lighting can also make focusing or exposure less reliable.

Glare or streaks around lights

  • Clean the lens and try a different shooting angle.
  • Avoid pointing directly at a strong light source when possible; Samsung notes glare may be more noticeable at night or at high zoom.

Dark bands or flicker under indoor lighting

Samsung attributes these effects to lighting frequency and suggests adjusting shutter speed in Pro mode; its troubleshooting guidance gives 1/120 second or lower as a direction to try. That value is not a guaranteed fix for every light or Galaxy model. See Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance for the device-specific context.
