If your Samsung phone will not cast, first identify whether you mean mirroring the whole screen with Smart View or sending video from a casting-enabled app. Then check that the TV is on, both devices use the same Wi-Fi network, and the TV accepts the connection. Compatibility, unstable network conditions, outdated software, VPN settings, or protected content can also prevent Smart View from working.
First, identify what you are trying to cast
Samsung uses Smart View for mirroring the phone’s screen to a compatible TV or receiver. App casting is different: you start playback in an app and use that app’s cast control, whose location varies by app. A TV appearing in a streaming app does not necessarily mean Smart View is available, and a Smart View problem does not by itself explain an app’s playback or account issue.
To mirror the full screen
Open Smart View from the Galaxy phone’s Quick Panel, select the TV, then follow any on-screen permission or PIN prompt.
To cast from an app
Open the app, start or select the content, and use its cast control if available. The receiver and content must support that app’s casting method.

Work through these checks in order
- Make sure the TV is on and visible. Open Smart View on the phone and select the TV. If it is missing from the list, refresh the list and check that the TV is powered on.
- Confirm both devices use the same Wi-Fi network. Check the network name on the phone and TV; being on different networks can stop Smart View discovery and mirroring.
- Accept the TV’s connection request. After selecting the TV, approve its on-screen permission request. Some setups may ask for a PIN. If the TV rejects the connection, check its connection and external-device permission settings.
- Verify model compatibility. Smart View is not available on every Galaxy device or receiver. Samsung’s documented Smart View workflow requires support for the relevant screen-mirroring capability, including Miracast. Check the specific phone and TV or receiver models rather than assuming any smart TV will work. - Check network conditions and VPN settings. An unstable connection can cause errors. If you see a VPN setting error, Samsung advises disconnecting from the VPN and trying again.
- Update and restart. Check for available software updates for both the phone and TV, then restart each device and retry. TV update menu names vary by model.
- Check whether the content is protected. Samsung says DRM-protected content cannot be mirrored through Smart View. If the screen mirrors but a particular protected video does not, use the provider’s supported TV app or casting method if available.
Samsung’s screen-mirroring guide also describes the distinction between Smart View and app casting. For unusual device behavior that persists after these checks, Samsung’s UK guidance points to submitting an error report through Samsung Members.
If Smart View is unavailable, choose another connection method
For a non-smart TV, Samsung lists a Chromecast device or an HDMI adaptor as possible alternatives. They are not interchangeable: Chromecast is for casting from compatible apps, while HDMI is a wired connection that requires the particular phone and adapter to support video output. Samsung’s general guidance does not establish wired video-output support for every Galaxy model, so verify the exact phone model, connector, and adapter requirements before buying or connecting one. These alternatives do not resolve every Smart View compatibility issue or protected-content restriction.

Why the exact phone and TV models matter
Feature availability and menu labels can differ by Galaxy model, TV model, software version, and region. Samsung’s regional guidance—including its Hong Kong Smart View instructions—notes regional or model variation. Check the support information for both devices if Smart View is missing or the receiver never appears.
