On a supported Samsung Galaxy phone, open Settings → Sounds and vibration → Sound quality and effects to try Dolby Atmos, Equalizer and Adapt sound. These controls can make playback suit your content and preferences, but they do not guarantee better sound for every listener or device. If the menu is missing, search Settings for “Sound quality and effects” or the feature name; Samsung notes that screens and availability vary by model, carrier and software version.
Find the sound controls
Go to Settings → Sounds and vibration → Sound quality and effects. The names or available options may differ by phone and software version. Samsung’s US audio-features guide and Saudi Arabia guide describe the menu; the latter was updated April 28, 2026. If you cannot find it, use the Settings search field.
Try Dolby Atmos with familiar audio
Turn on Dolby Atmos, then replay a familiar song, video or spoken recording with the effect both on and off. Samsung describes modes including Auto, Movie, Music and Voice; choose one that matches what you are listening to and compare. On some US Galaxy phones, you can also toggle Dolby Atmos from Quick Settings and press and hold its icon to see advanced choices. The result depends on the content, output device and your preference. If Galaxy Buds are connected, the Sound quality and effects menu may show 360 Audio in place of Dolby Atmos, according to Samsung’s troubleshooting page. Do not assume that an option missing from your phone is available under a different name.

Choose an Equalizer preset—or adjust gently
Open Equalizer and compare its presets with the Normal setting. Samsung lists Normal, Pop, Classic, Jazz, Rock and Custom; Custom lets you adjust the sound manually. Presets are starting points, not rankings. Listen to the same passage at a similar volume before and after a change, and keep adjustments small enough that you can tell what each one does. There is no single best equalizer curve established for every song, phone speaker or pair of headphones.
Personalize headphone sound with Adapt sound
Adapt sound offers age-group profiles and a custom profile based on an on-screen hearing test. Follow the prompts in the menu and preview the result against your usual listening. Samsung says wired or Bluetooth headphones are needed to preview a profile or complete the hearing-test steps described in its US guide. If the phone asks you to connect headphones, do so before continuing; without them, these headphone-specific steps may not be available.

Check headphone-dependent options only if you use headphones
UHQ upscaler is a separate option for connected headphones, not a prerequisite for Dolby Atmos or Equalizer. Samsung’s Canada guide, last updated July 10, 2025, says UHQ upscaler is used with connected headphones; Samsung’s US guidance names wired Type-C headphones for the relevant headphone actions. The control may not appear on every model. Check that your wired or Bluetooth accessory is compatible with your phone before troubleshooting its absence.
Keep separate app sound in mind
If audio from one app needs to play on a different device than the phone’s other audio, look for Separate app sound in the same general sound settings area. Samsung’s regional menu guidance covers this feature, but its labels and availability can vary. It routes an app’s audio to a selected output; it is not an equalizer or a general sound-enhancement setting.

Compare settings without guessing
- Use a familiar track, video or voice recording and keep the output device and volume consistent.
- Toggle Dolby Atmos or select a content mode, then compare the same passage with the effect off.
- Try one Equalizer preset at a time; if you use Custom, make modest adjustments and listen again.
- If using headphones, create or preview an Adapt sound profile and compare it with the profile disabled.
- Try UHQ upscaler only if the control is present and headphones are connected.
Samsung documents what these controls do and how to reach them, not a measured improvement that applies to every listener. The useful choice is the setting that sounds clearer or more pleasing to you on your phone, with your content and output device.
