Samsung Package Installer is the Android system installation flow that handles apps on a Galaxy phone or tablet. It is part of the device software—not the APK file and not usually a separate app you need to download. When you open an APK, Package Installer may show a prompt to install it.
What Samsung Package Installer does
Android’s PackageInstaller provides functions for installing, upgrading, and removing app packages. An app package may be a single APK or a set of split APKs. Package Installer is the system function that processes the package; it is not the app being installed.
Seeing Package Installer in an install prompt or in device software is not, by itself, evidence of malware. The prompt can appear during a normal installation. Whether an installation succeeds depends on the source permission, security controls, device policies, and whether the package is valid and compatible.
Why an APK may be blocked on a Galaxy device
Samsung says Galaxy devices are set by default to prohibit installations from sources other than Google Play and Galaxy Store. As Samsung puts it, “By default, your Galaxy phone or tablet is set to prohibit apps from being installed from sources other than the Play Store and Galaxy Store.” Samsung’s current US support instructions describe permission for the particular app handling the APK, such as a browser or file manager.

The source app may not have permission
If Android says the source is not allowed, the setting applies to the app that opened or downloaded the APK. Search Settings for Install unknown apps, select that source app, and review its permission. Grant it only if you trust the source and have decided to proceed. This permits that source app to install packages; it does not certify any APK as safe.
Auto Blocker or another policy may intervene
Samsung’s Auto Blocker support guidance says the feature can block installations from unauthorized sources. Samsung states that Auto Blocker is on by default on Galaxy devices released with One UI 6.1.1; that default should not be assumed for every Galaxy model or software version. A work or school device may also have a separate administrator policy. Check your device’s security settings and consult model-specific support rather than treating every blocked install as the same problem.

The APK may be invalid or incompatible
A source permission does not resolve every installation failure. The package may be damaged, intended for a different Android version or device architecture, or otherwise incompatible. Read the exact error and check the APK’s origin and device compatibility before changing security settings.

How to allow a trusted source when you choose
- Open the APK using the browser, file manager, or other app that downloaded or opened it.
- If prompted that installation is not allowed, open Settings and search for Install unknown apps.
- Select the specific source app and review the permission. If you trust the APK and want to continue, enable permission for that source.
- Return to the APK and follow the installation prompt. If Auto Blocker or another policy still prevents the install, review the relevant device setting or contact the device administrator; do not assume that turning off protection is necessary or safe.
- Afterward, return to the source app’s permission and turn it off if you no longer need that app to install packages.
Settings names and locations vary by Galaxy model and One UI version. Samsung’s current support page uses Settings search; an older Galaxy S9/S9+ Android Oreo guide describes granting permission to the specific app used to open the APK. Use the instructions for your model and software version rather than relying on an old fixed menu path.

Does Package Installer grant an app access to your data?
No. Installing an app and granting its runtime permissions are separate processes in Android 10 and later. An installation prompt does not mean the app has automatically received access to sensitive data such as your location, camera, or contacts; review permission requests separately when you use the app. See Android’s Android 10 privacy changes for the distinction.
Why does Package Installer keep appearing, and can you delete it?
A prompt can recur if you repeatedly open an APK, retry an installation, or encounter a blocked or unsuccessful install. Identify which app opened the package and check the error, its source permission, Auto Blocker, and any device policy. The available evidence identifies Package Installer as part of Android’s package-installation capability, not an APK or an ordinary app users should remove. Do not try to delete or disable a core installation component to silence a prompt; address the APK or the setting that triggered it instead.

What sideloading means for security
Installing an APK from outside an official app store is commonly called sideloading. Samsung warns, “Your phone and personal data are more vulnerable to attacks from unknown apps.” Samsung’s support guidance recommends caution, and its 2021 Samsung Insights article advises turning off a source app’s install permission after a specific installation when appropriate.

- Use an APK only when you trust its publisher and where it came from.
- Do not treat permission to install as proof that a file is safe.
- Keep the source-app permission off when you do not need it.
- If the source, package, or compatibility is uncertain, do not bypass a security block just to complete the installation.
