Samsung One UI and other Android phones use the same basic widget idea, but they do not present the same widget experience. On both, an app supplies a compact, at-a-glance view that you can place on a Home screen, move, and sometimes resize. Galaxy phones add Samsung-documented surfaces and organization options, including Home screen widget stacks and, on supported software and models, Lock screen and Always On Display widgets. A phone’s launcher, model, One UI or Android version, and the app itself determine which controls you actually see.
The short answer: the widget model is shared, the surfaces are not
Android defines a widget as a view supplied by an app and displayed by a host such as a launcher. That division explains most differences. The app developer declares the widget’s layout, supported dimensions, and resize behavior; the phone’s host decides where it can appear and how the user reaches it.
Samsung Galaxy phones run Android with Samsung’s One UI launcher and Samsung-specific surfaces. Consequently, a Galaxy user may see stack controls, Lock screen widget settings, or Always On Display options that are absent from another Android phone. Conversely, an Android phone from another manufacturer may offer its own launcher features that Samsung does not. “Android widgets” therefore describes a platform capability, not one universal screen or menu.

Samsung Developer summarizes the purpose this way: “Widgets can also be added to the Home screen for quick access to information without entering an app.” The widget is a shortcut view, not a replacement for the full application; tapping it can open the app for actions the compact view cannot perform.

Adding a Home screen widget
On a Samsung Galaxy
- Go to the Home screen page where you want the widget.
- Touch and hold an empty area until the Home screen editing controls appear.
- Tap Widgets.
- Browse the app list, then tap an app to see its available widget designs and sizes.
- Touch and hold the chosen widget and drag it to the desired Home screen location, or use the add command shown by your One UI release.
- Complete any setup prompt, such as selecting an account, list, location, or data source.
The exact labels can move between One UI releases, but the entry point is the Home screen’s empty-space long press. If an app is installed but absent from the widget picker, check that the app is enabled and updated, then restart the launcher or phone. Some apps provide no widget at all.
On another Android phone
- Open the target Home screen page.
- Touch and hold an empty area.
- Tap Widgets (the label may be inside a customization menu).
- Select the app, choose one of its widget types, and drag it onto the grid.
- Answer the widget’s configuration prompt, if one appears.
This is the platform’s common workflow, not a guarantee about every launcher. A manufacturer may use a plus button, a dedicated widget drawer, or a different edit mode. If the long-press gesture does nothing, try pinching inward on the Home screen or opening the launcher’s settings.
Resizing and appearance controls
Why one widget resizes and another does not
Resize support belongs to the individual widget. Android’s widget provider declares sizing and resize behavior; the launcher then offers handles only when the provider and current host support them. A calendar widget may expand from a compact agenda to a wider month view, while a single-purpose control may have a fixed footprint.

Dragging a handle changes the occupied grid cells; the widget may redraw its content at breakpoints chosen by its developer. If no handles appear, changing the Home screen grid or moving the widget will not create resize support.

Customization is separate from resizing
A widget can be resizable yet offer no visual settings, or it can offer color, transparency, theme, or content choices at a fixed size. Samsung’s documented examples include widget customization settings that can contain color or transparency options. Those settings are supplied by the app and can differ between widget types from the same app.
On non-Samsung Android, look for a configuration screen immediately after placement or a long press followed by Settings, Customize, or a pencil icon. The wording and controls come from the app and launcher, so a guide for one manufacturer should not be treated as a platform-wide menu map.
Stacks: Samsung’s documented organization option
What a Galaxy stack does
One UI lets you combine compatible Home screen widgets into a stack. The stack occupies one area while containing multiple widgets; you swipe across it to change the visible widget. This is useful when several at-a-glance panels need the same Home screen space.
To create one, enter Home screen edit mode, add or select a widget that supports stacking, and use the stack or combine command exposed by your One UI version. You can then swipe through the stack and edit its members from the stack controls. The available command depends on widget compatibility and software release.

Automatic rotation caveat
Samsung’s support page states that automatic rotation is not available on One UI 6.1.1 or higher. Do not assume a stack will cycle on a timer; manual swiping is the dependable behavior described by Samsung. A different Galaxy release or regional support page may show different controls, so check the version installed on the phone.
What “Android supports stacks” would mean
There is no single stack behavior shared by every Android launcher. Google’s general help documents adding and resizing widgets, but it does not establish Samsung’s stack implementation as a universal Android feature. Another launcher may supply its own grouping mechanism, while a third may offer only separate widgets. Compare the launcher actually installed on the phone rather than treating Samsung’s capability as an Android baseline.
Lock screen and Always On Display widgets
Galaxy Lock screen surfaces
Samsung documents a separate Galaxy path for Lock screen widgets. On supported models and software, you edit the Lock screen, open the widget area, and choose from the apps Samsung makes available there. These are not automatically the same widget layouts offered on the Home screen; the app must provide a compatible surface and Samsung must enable it for that release.

A widget shown in an older tutorial may therefore be renamed, moved, or unavailable after an update. Region, model, security policy, and One UI version can also affect the list.

Always On Display
Some Galaxy devices and software versions expose widget information through Always On Display. Availability is conditional, and an Always On Display element may be a Samsung-specific presentation rather than the full Home screen widget. Check the phone’s Lock screen and Always On Display settings for the controls supplied with that model.
Why this is not a universal Android promise
Google’s general widget instructions address Home screens. Google also documents At a Glance on some Android-device lock screens, but that does not establish universal third-party Lock screen widgets across Android phones. A non-Samsung phone may have a lock-screen information panel, no third-party lock-screen widgets, or a manufacturer-specific alternative.

The app provider controls the widget definition
The developer packages each widget with a provider declaration. That declaration identifies the widget’s layouts, minimum dimensions, resize modes, update behavior, and any configuration activity. An app update can add, remove, rename, or redesign a widget without the operating system changing.
The launcher controls placement
The host launcher maps the provider’s minimum size onto its own grid. A five-column grid gives a widget different proportions from a four-column grid; edge margins, folders, gesture areas, and free space also matter. The launcher decides whether a widget can span pages, enter a stack, or appear in a special surface.

The device and release add policy limits
Model-specific hardware, battery policies, enterprise restrictions, regional firmware, and One UI or Android updates can alter what is offered. Two Galaxy phones on different One UI releases can show different Lock screen options, just as two non-Samsung phones can expose different Home screen menus while running the same Android major version.
Troubleshooting when a widget is missing or wrong-sized
The app does not appear in the widget picker
- Confirm the app is installed, enabled, and updated.
- Open the app once and complete its initial sign-in or permission prompts.
- Restart the phone or launcher, then reopen the widget picker.
- Check whether the app actually publishes a widget; installation alone does not require one.
The widget cannot be resized
- Long-press the widget and look for resize handles.
- If handles are absent, treat the widget as fixed-size; changing launcher settings cannot add provider support.
- If handles exist but movement stops, make room on the grid or try another Home screen page.
- After an app update, remove and re-add the widget if its layout has changed.
A Galaxy stack or Lock screen option is absent
- Verify the phone model and One UI version, because Samsung scopes these features to supported software and devices.
- Install pending system and app updates, then check the relevant Home screen, Lock screen, or Always On Display editor again.
- Confirm that the particular app supplies a compatible widget; Samsung cannot expose a surface the provider did not create.
- Do not rely on an older screenshot: Samsung’s newer guidance uses Brief widgets, and supported apps can change.
The widget shows stale or limited information
Open the full app to check account, permission, connectivity, and sync status. The compact widget may intentionally show less content than the app. Battery-saving or background restrictions can also delay updates; the correct setting depends on the phone and app, so change those restrictions only when the app’s own support guidance calls for it.
How to decide what applies to your phone
- Identify the phone model and installed One UI or Android version.
- Identify the active launcher; a third-party launcher can replace the manufacturer’s Home screen behavior.
- Check the app’s widget list and configuration screens.
- Test the Home screen first, then separately inspect Lock screen and Always On Display editors if the phone offers them.
- When comparing instructions, match the region and software release of the guide to the phone in hand.
For a Galaxy owner, One UI is the relevant host experience: Home screen widgets are familiar Android widgets with Samsung’s stack and lock-screen additions where supported. For another Android owner, start with the platform’s common add-and-resize workflow, then follow the manufacturer launcher’s rules. The app, host, device, and version—not the word “Android” alone—determine the controls visible on screen.

What developers and advanced users should remember
A widget is a contract between provider and host. The provider supplies layouts and declares minimum and responsive dimensions; the host allocates space, handles touch interaction, and may expose the widget on additional surfaces. Samsung can provide a stack or Lock screen presentation only for providers and releases that support that surface. Android’s implementation documents explain the contract, but they do not force every launcher to expose identical UI.
This model also explains why a screenshot-based tutorial ages quickly. A launcher redesign can rename Widgets, a One UI update can change stack behavior, and an app update can remove a size or configuration option. Use the phone’s current editor as the final authority, and treat platform documentation as the definition of supported behavior rather than a promise that every model shows every feature.
The Bottom Line
Samsung One UI does not use a different kind of widget from Android; it is a Samsung host for the Android widget system. The practical differences are Samsung’s documented stacks and supported Lock screen or Always On Display surfaces, plus the menus and limits imposed by a particular Galaxy model and One UI release. On any Android phone, the app provider and launcher decide whether a widget can resize, where it can appear, and which controls you get.
