For most Galaxy owners, keep Samsung One UI Home unless you can name a specific feature or layout you need from another launcher. One UI Home is Samsung’s official Galaxy home app, with Samsung’s Home and Apps screens, full-screen gesture support and a setting to lock the home layout. A third-party launcher replaces that experience and can add a different workflow—for example, Microsoft Launcher offers a customizable feed and layout import—but compatibility and default-app behavior vary by phone and Android version.
There is no reliable universal winner. Choose the launcher that fits your preferred layout, workflow and device support, then verify that Android keeps it selected as the default home app.
What a launcher controls
An Android launcher is the app that presents your home screen, app list, icons, widgets and related navigation behavior. Changing launchers changes the surface you use every time you return Home; it does not replace Android itself or remove your installed apps.
Android permits only one launcher to be the active default at a time. You can install several, but the phone must know which one should open when you press Home or use a home gesture. The exact settings labels and available controls differ by manufacturer, Android release and software configuration.

Samsung One UI Home: what you get
Samsung’s official Galaxy home experience
Samsung describes One UI Home in its official Google Play listing as “the official Samsung launcher for Galaxy.” The listing describes neatly arranged icons and separate Home and Apps screens. That arrangement is familiar to Galaxy owners and is the least disruptive choice if your current folders, widgets and app-screen organization already work for you.
Samsung also lists full-screen gestures and an option to lock the home layout so icons and widgets cannot be moved accidentally. According to that listing, the described features require Android 9.0 Pie or later. The listing was updated on September 5, 2019, and Samsung warns that available features can differ by device or operating-system version. Treat the listing as a documented baseline, not a complete specification for every current One UI release.
Why staying put can be the sensible choice
- Your existing Home and Apps screens already match how you find and launch apps.
- You rely on Samsung-specific behavior and do not want to recreate folders, widgets or page order.
- You would rather avoid troubleshooting a default-home setting after a system update or reboot.
- You do not have a clearly defined third-party feature that solves a problem for you.
Keeping One UI Home also gives you a known fallback: the launcher that shipped with your Galaxy. That does not prove it is faster, more private or better for battery life than every alternative; the available documentation does not establish those comparisons.

A replacement, not an add-on
Installing another launcher changes the app Android uses for the home experience. You may see a setup prompt asking whether to use it once or always. If no prompt appears, the launcher’s support instructions generally direct you to the phone’s default-app settings and the Home app or launcher entry.
The old launcher normally remains installed and its data remains on the phone, but Android still uses one default launcher at a time. Microsoft’s support documentation says there is no easy toggle that lets Android use two launchers simultaneously; switching requires selecting a different default.

Capabilities differ by product
Third-party launchers are not one standardized category. One may focus on a compact app list, another on extensive icon and grid controls, and another on an information feed. Those differences are product-specific. Do not assume that a feature documented for one launcher is available in every alternative.
Microsoft Launcher is a useful concrete example. Microsoft describes a customizable feed that can show calendar items, to-do lists and Sticky Notes. It supports starting with a new arrangement or importing a prior home-screen layout. Microsoft lists Android 7.0 or later as the requirement. It also explicitly says the launcher does not reproduce your PC’s home screen, so installing it should not be understood as mirroring the Windows desktop on your phone.

Choose according to the problem you are solving
Stay with One UI Home when familiarity is the priority
Use One UI Home if your main requirement is a predictable Galaxy interface. This is especially practical when your home pages contain carefully arranged widgets, work folders or shortcuts that you do not want to rebuild. Samsung’s documented layout-lock option can also help if accidental rearrangement is the nuisance you are trying to eliminate.
Staying does not mean you are accepting every possible limitation of every Samsung release. It means the replacement cost is not justified unless an alternative addresses a concrete need. If you only want a new wallpaper, widget or icon arrangement, try changing those within your current home setup before replacing the launcher.
Try a third-party launcher when it provides a specific workflow
A replacement is worth testing when its documented function directly matches your routine. Microsoft Launcher, for example, is relevant if you want calendar, to-do and Sticky Notes information in a feed or want to import an existing layout instead of rebuilding every page manually.
Define the desired outcome before installing: “I need a feed containing my daily tasks,” “I want a different app-list structure,” or “I need to restore a saved arrangement.” A vague goal such as “make my phone faster” is not supported by the available comparative evidence and makes it difficult to judge whether switching helped.

Do not switch solely on broad performance claims
Neither Samsung’s listing nor the cited launcher support pages provides a controlled comparison of launch speed, battery drain, privacy, gesture latency or long-term reliability. Those qualities can depend on the Galaxy model, One UI build, widgets, animations and other installed apps. Treat online claims that one launcher is universally faster or smoother as unverified for your phone unless you test under comparable conditions.

Compatibility checks before you install
Confirm the Android requirement
Check the launcher’s current store listing or support page for its minimum Android version. Microsoft documents Android 7.0 or later. Samsung’s documented One UI Home features are described for Android 9.0 Pie or later, with device and OS variation. Your Galaxy may have a newer requirement or a feature set that differs from either baseline.
Check whether your phone permits a third-party default
Google’s Android Help notes that home-screen procedures vary by device. On many phones, the relevant control is under Settings > Apps > Choose default apps > Home app, but Samsung may use different wording or place the control elsewhere in a particular One UI release. If the launcher does not become default after installation, search Settings for default apps, Home app or launcher rather than assuming the installation failed.
Some operating-system configurations also restrict setting a work-managed launcher as default. Microsoft’s support guidance calls out this kind of restriction. If the phone is managed by an employer or school, an administrator policy may be the reason the selection is unavailable.
Expect manufacturer-specific exceptions
Niagara’s support documentation reports that Xiaomi devices running HyperOS 2.0 and later may block third-party defaults through the ordinary path and require an alternative method. That is a Xiaomi-specific vendor report, not evidence of the same behavior on Samsung phones, but it illustrates why generic Android instructions cannot be assumed to work everywhere.
Niagara also reported on December 16, 2025, that a Samsung issue could cause the default home screen to revert. Its recommended response was to select Niagara again in system settings and reboot if necessary. This is a time-sensitive support report about a particular issue, not proof that every Galaxy phone regularly resets its launcher.

How to switch safely
1. Record your current arrangement
Before changing anything, take screenshots of each home page and note which widgets, folders and shortcuts matter. This gives you a visual reference if the new launcher cannot import the arrangement or if you decide to return to One UI Home.
2. Read the launcher’s requirements and migration notes
Confirm the minimum Android version, whether layout import is supported, and whether any feed or account features require separate permissions or sign-in. Do not infer those details from another launcher’s documentation.

After installation, open it and complete its setup screens. If Android asks whether to use the launcher once or always, choose the option that makes it the default only when you are ready to test it. If you choose “Just once,” Android may continue opening the previous launcher.
4. Set it as the default Home app if necessary
When no prompt appears, open your phone’s default-app settings. A common path is Settings > Apps > Choose default apps > Home app; labels vary by Galaxy model and software version. Select the installed launcher, then press Home or use your normal home gesture to verify that it opens.
5. Rebuild or import your layout
Use the launcher’s import option if it documents one. Microsoft Launcher supports importing a prior home-screen layout. An import may not reproduce every Samsung widget or shortcut exactly, so compare the result with the screenshots you made and add anything missing manually.

6. Test the tasks you perform most
- Return Home from an app and open the app list.
- Open your most-used folders and widgets.
- Use your preferred navigation mode, including gestures if you rely on them.
- Lock and unlock the phone, then restart it once to check whether the default persists.
- Check any work profile or managed-app behavior that matters to you.
7. Keep One UI Home as your fallback
Do not uninstall or disable One UI Home while evaluating another launcher. If the replacement fails to start, loses its default status or lacks a required widget, return to the same Home app setting and select One UI Home.

Troubleshooting common switching problems
The launcher opens once but not afterward
You likely selected a one-time launch option or Android did not save the default. Reopen the Home app setting, select the launcher again and press Home. If the choice disappears after a reboot, check for device-management policies and consult the launcher’s support page for your Android build.
The phone keeps returning to One UI Home
First, manually reselect the third-party launcher under the default Home app setting. A reboot may be required in some reported cases. If the behavior repeats, document the Galaxy model, One UI version and Android version before contacting the launcher’s support team; those details determine whether the issue is a known software-specific problem.
The imported layout looks incomplete
Layout import is not a universal migration standard. Recreate missing folders or widgets from your screenshots, and check whether a Samsung-only widget has a replacement supplied by the new launcher or its companion apps. If rebuilding takes longer than the benefit you expected, switch back to One UI Home.
Gestures behave differently
Samsung’s listing mentions full-screen gestures for One UI Home, but gesture behavior can vary with Android navigation mode, device software and the replacement launcher. Test navigation before committing to the new setup. If a gesture you depend on is inconsistent, the practical fix may be returning to One UI Home rather than changing several system settings.

Bottom line: which should you use?
Use Samsung One UI Home when its Galaxy layout, Apps screen and documented controls meet your needs. Try a third-party launcher only when its current, documented feature set solves a defined problem—Microsoft Launcher’s feed and layout import are examples—or gives you a workflow you cannot obtain comfortably in One UI Home.
Before switching, verify the Android requirement, locate your phone’s Home app setting and test the default after a restart. That compatibility check matters more than blanket claims about which launcher is “best,” because the result depends on your Galaxy model, software version, navigation mode and the particular launcher you choose.
