For gaming, choose the Samsung Odyssey G5 (LC34G55T) if its 165Hz refresh rate, tight 1000R curve and FreeSync Premium support are your priorities. Choose the Gigabyte G34WQC for a more flexible desk setup: it is brighter on paper, carries VESA DisplayHDR 400 certification, provides four video inputs, includes speakers and has a height-adjustable stand. Both are 34-inch 3440×1440 VA ultrawide monitors, so the decision is less about basic image size and more about motion, curve, HDR expectations, connectivity and ergonomics.
If you searched for “Odyssey G5 or Gigabyte G34WQC?”, the short answer is Samsung for a gaming-first build and Gigabyte for a mixed-use workstation that also plays games. “Gigabyte g34wqc whats better?” The answer is its practical features and brighter, certified HDR specification—not a higher resolution or a fundamentally different panel type.
Quick verdict
| Choose this model | Best fit | Main reason | Main compromise |
|---|---|---|---|
| Samsung Odyssey G5 LC34G55T | Competitive and immersive gaming | Higher maximum refresh, tighter curve and AMD FreeSync Premium positioning | Lower stated brightness, fewer inputs, tilt-only stand and no speakers listed on Samsung’s cited specification |
| Gigabyte G34WQC | Gaming plus work, consoles and several connected devices | Brighter stated output, VESA DisplayHDR 400, four video inputs, speakers and height adjustment | Lower maximum refresh and a less aggressive curve |
The differences are meaningful, but neither monitor is automatically superior for every desk. Their shared 3440×1440 VA format gives both a wide workspace and strong native contrast. Your graphics card still needs to render substantially more pixels than a 2560×1440 display, so refresh-rate advantages matter only when your system can produce high frame rates at this resolution.

Gaming performance: where Samsung has the edge
165Hz versus 144Hz
The Samsung’s higher maximum refresh is its clearest gaming advantage. A 165Hz panel can present a new frame roughly every 6.06 milliseconds, while 144Hz updates about every 6.94 milliseconds. The numerical gap is not dramatic, but it gives the Samsung a little more headroom for fast shooters, racing games and other titles where camera movement is constant.
To see that benefit, your computer must deliver frame rates close to the selected refresh rate. At 3440×1440, demanding games may require a modern midrange or high-end graphics card and sensible quality settings. If your system normally runs between 70 and 110 frames per second, both displays can still look smooth with adaptive sync; the extra ceiling will simply be used less often.
What the 1000R and 1500R curves feel like
A 1000R radius is tighter than 1500R. The Samsung wraps the outer parts of the image more toward your eyes, which can make a wide game view feel more immersive when you sit centrally at a normal desktop distance. It can also reduce the amount you turn your head to inspect the edges.
The Gigabyte’s 1500R shape is gentler. It is usually easier to share with another person, use for spreadsheets and switch between a flat second display and the ultrawide without a strong change in perspective. Some users prefer the less pronounced bend for text-heavy work, while others find the tighter Samsung curve more enveloping in games. Curve preference is personal; a showroom or a return policy is valuable if you have never used a 1000R panel.
Adaptive sync and the “1ms” claim
Samsung describes AMD FreeSync Premium as adaptive-sync technology that reduces tearing, stutter and input latency. In practical terms, variable refresh rate lets the monitor synchronize its refresh timing with changing frame rates instead of displaying a new frame on a rigid schedule.
Both manufacturers list a 1ms MPRT figure. MPRT is a persistence-based measurement or mode, not a guarantee that every transition completes in one millisecond. It does not by itself tell you how much dark-level smearing, overshoot or inverse ghosting you will see. Independent testing from RTINGS evaluates brightness, HDR, response time, input lag, variable-refresh behavior and ergonomics for both models; use those measurements when judging real motion quality rather than treating the vendor response figure as a complete result.

Brightness, contrast and HDR: Gigabyte is the stronger specification
Stated brightness
Gigabyte lists higher typical brightness than Samsung. That gives the G34WQC more stated headroom in a bright room and makes highlights less likely to look subdued when you are not running a calibrated, dark-room setup. Actual brightness can vary by picture mode, unit and measurement method, so treat the figures as specification guidance rather than a promise that every scene will be that bright.
The Samsung’s lower stated output is not automatically a problem for a dim or controlled room. It can be comfortable for long sessions, but users with sunlight on the screen or strong overhead lighting may need to manage room reflections carefully.
HDR10 versus DisplayHDR 400
Samsung lists HDR10 compatibility. Gigabyte lists VESA DisplayHDR 400, a formal certification that includes a 400-level peak-brightness requirement and other display criteria. That certification gives the Gigabyte a clearer baseline for HDR capability on paper.
Neither specification turns these VA monitors into an OLED or full-array local-dimming display. HDR impact depends on peak brightness, black level, contrast behavior, tone mapping and whether the game or video has a good HDR implementation. Without local dimming, bright and dark objects that share a zone are still handled by the same backlight area, so highlights will not have the intensity or isolation of a much more advanced HDR monitor.
For ordinary desktop work, SDR mode is often the more predictable choice. Enable HDR in the operating system only when you have HDR games or video to use, then adjust the display’s brightness and the application’s HDR calibration rather than leaving HDR on by default without checking the result.

Connectivity and desk convenience
Inputs for a PC, console and second computer
The Gigabyte lists two DisplayPort 1.4 and two HDMI 2.0 inputs. That arrangement is useful if you regularly alternate between a desktop PC, a work laptop, a console and another device without swapping cables.
The Samsung lists one DisplayPort 1.4 and one HDMI 2.0 input. It covers a conventional single-PC setup, but adding a console or second computer may require a cable change, an external switch or a dock. For high-refresh 3440×1440 from a PC, use a DisplayPort 1.4 connection and confirm that your graphics card and cable support the required bandwidth.
Speakers
Gigabyte includes 2W×2 speakers. They are convenient for system sounds, video calls and casual playback when you do not want headphones or desk speakers. Built-in monitor speakers are generally a convenience feature, not a replacement for a dedicated audio system.

Stand and VESA mounting
The Gigabyte stand provides 100mm of height adjustment as well as tilt. Height adjustment makes it easier to place the top of the image at a comfortable eye level and can reduce neck strain when the monitor is used for long work sessions.
Samsung’s cited stand specification lists tilt. If the supplied stand leaves the panel too low, a monitor arm is the practical solution. Check mounting hardware before buying: Samsung uses a 75×75mm VESA pattern, while Gigabyte uses 100×100mm. An arm that supports one pattern may need a different plate or adapter for the other.

How the shared VA panel affects your choice
Contrast and dark-room viewing
Both models use VA technology, which generally provides deeper native blacks and higher contrast than a typical IPS gaming monitor. That can improve the look of dark game scenes and widescreen movies, especially in a room where ambient light is low.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesVA panels can also show dark-level smearing in some transitions. The amount depends on the specific panel, overdrive tuning, refresh rate and scene. A manufacturer’s MPRT number does not reveal this behavior, which is why independent response-time and overshoot measurements are more useful than the headline figure.
3440×1440 workspace
The shared resolution gives you a wide 21:9 canvas for a game view, a timeline, two document windows or a browser beside a work application. It is wider than standard 16:9 1440p while retaining enough vertical pixels for most desktop tasks.
Ultrawide support is not universal. Some older games may add side bars, crop the image or require a community fix. Competitive games can also treat a wider field of view differently, so check the titles you play most before assuming every game will use the entire panel naturally.
Setup checklist for either monitor
- Verify the regional model. Read the label or retailer listing carefully and match the complete LC34G55T or G34WQC suffix to the manufacturer’s page for your market.
- Use the appropriate cable. Connect a gaming PC over DisplayPort 1.4 when you want the highest available refresh at 3440×1440. Keep the cable short enough and in good condition to avoid intermittent signal problems.
- Install the panel and check alignment. Place the display directly in front of you. With the Samsung’s tighter curve, a centered position is particularly important; with either model, avoid placing the screen so high that you tilt your head upward.
- Select the refresh rate in Windows. Open Settings → System → Display → Advanced display, select the ultrawide, and choose the highest stable refresh rate offered by the connected port.
- Enable adaptive sync. Turn on the monitor’s adaptive-sync or FreeSync option in its on-screen menu. In your graphics driver, enable the compatible variable-refresh feature and test a game for flicker or dropouts.
- Choose an overdrive level. Start with the middle response setting. If moving objects show bright halos, reduce overdrive; if ordinary transitions remain visibly smeared, try the next setting and compare in a game rather than relying on a static test image.
- Calibrate brightness for the room. Lower brightness for a dark room and raise it only as needed for daylight. Do not confuse a brighter setting with better HDR; it can simply make every SDR window more tiring to view.
- Configure HDR per application. Enable operating-system HDR when playing HDR content, run the game’s own calibration screen, and return to SDR for normal desktop use if colors or text look wrong.
- Test every input you plan to use. On the Gigabyte, label the two DisplayPort and two HDMI connections in your cable layout. On the Samsung, decide which of the single DisplayPort and HDMI connections will remain permanently attached.
- Set up audio separately. Use the Gigabyte’s built-in speakers for basic playback, or connect dedicated speakers or headphones for fuller sound. With the Samsung, arrange external audio before disposing of your old monitor.
Which monitor suits each type of buyer?
Choose the Samsung Odyssey G5 when gaming is the priority
- You play fast-paced games and want the higher refresh ceiling.
- You like a pronounced, wraparound 1000R curve and normally sit centered at the desk.
- Your setup uses one main PC and does not need several permanently connected video sources.
- You already own headphones or separate speakers.
- You are comfortable using a monitor arm if tilt-only positioning is not enough.
The Samsung’s advantages are concentrated in the experience of sitting directly in front of the display and driving it at a high frame rate. They are most valuable when your games and graphics hardware can take advantage of that headroom.
Choose the Gigabyte G34WQC when flexibility matters more
- You combine gaming with office work, study or content consumption.
- Your room is bright and you prefer the model with the higher stated brightness.
- You want a formal DisplayHDR 400 listing rather than HDR10 compatibility alone.
- You switch among a desktop, laptop, console or other HDMI/DisplayPort sources.
- You need height adjustment or want basic audio without adding speakers immediately.
- You prefer a gentler 1500R curve for spreadsheets and shared viewing.
The Gigabyte’s strengths are practical rather than purely competitive: it is easier to integrate into a multi-device desk and asks less of you in terms of accessories.

Buying and compatibility checks
Confirm the exact SKU and region
Product suffixes vary by market. Samsung’s cited specification is for LC34G55TWWPXXU, while other regions use related LC34G55T designations. Before ordering, compare the exact suffix, input list, stand, power requirements and warranty terms shown by the local seller and the regional manufacturer page.
Plan for mounting and cables
If you intend to use a VESA arm, verify that its plate supports the monitor’s pattern and weight. The Samsung’s 75×75mm arrangement and the Gigabyte’s 100×100mm arrangement are not interchangeable without the correct adapter.
For a high-refresh 3440×1440 PC connection, budget for a reliable DisplayPort 1.4 cable. A cable that works at a lower resolution or refresh rate may not remain stable when the monitor is configured at its maximum mode.

Check live pricing and stock
Prices, inventory, warranty coverage and seller status change frequently and can differ by country. Treat any retailer listing, including an Amazon listing reported on August 13, 2025, as time-specific rather than a permanent price reference. Verify the current total cost and return policy immediately before purchase.
What independent testing can—and cannot—tell you
Manufacturer tables establish the intended feature set: panel class, resolution, refresh ceiling, ports, stand and advertised HDR mode. They do not establish every aspect of the viewing experience. RTINGS has reviewed both monitors with measurements for brightness, HDR, response time, input lag, variable-refresh operation and ergonomics. Those measurements are the appropriate evidence for judging real-world ghosting, overshoot, HDR impact and latency.
Because individual units, firmware and settings can vary, use a review’s test conditions as context rather than assuming one measured result applies identically to every monitor. A sensible buying decision combines the official specification with the independent measurements that matter to your games and room.
Final recommendation
Buy the Samsung Odyssey G5 LC34G55T when your priority is a more aggressive gaming presentation: the higher refresh ceiling, tight 1000R wrap and FreeSync Premium positioning. Buy the Gigabyte G34WQC when you want the better all-round desk monitor: higher stated brightness, VESA DisplayHDR 400, four video inputs, integrated speakers and a height-adjustable stand. Since both use the same 34-inch 3440×1440 VA format, neither wins every category; the right choice is the one whose trade-offs match your games, room, devices and ergonomics.
