Short answer: Samsung Neo QLED televisions use an LCD panel with a Mini LED backlight and local dimming. That combination can deliver very bright HDR, deep blacks and no OLED-style permanent burn-in on models such as the QN90D, but it is not flawless. Bright subtitles can produce halos, moving highlights can show transition artifacts, Game Mode reduces HDR brightness, and no manufacturer can promise one universal service life. Your realistic expectation depends on heat, brightness, hours of use, ventilation and the particular model’s backlight design.

This guide explains what local dimming is doing, which HDR formats Neo QLED supports, how burn-in differs from ordinary component failure, what long-term testing says about reliability, and which specifications matter when choosing or setting up a television.

What Samsung Neo QLED local dimming actually does

A Neo QLED is still an LCD television. Its pixels do not emit their own light; a rear LED backlight supplies illumination, and the liquid-crystal layer controls how much light passes through each area of the image. Local dimming divides that backlight into independently controlled zones. The television brightens zones behind highlights and darkens zones behind shadows instead of running the entire backlight at one level.

The result is a higher effective contrast ratio than an LCD with one global backlight setting. A night sky can become darker while a lamp, fire or headlight remains bright. In the Samsung QN90D, RTINGS found that local dimming produced deep blacks and strong contrast with little blooming in its testing. That performance is especially valuable in a room with lamps or daylight, where a very bright backlight helps overcome reflections.

What you will see in real scenes

  • Black level: Dark parts of the picture can look substantially deeper than on a conventional edge-lit LCD.
  • Blooming: A bright object can spill light into nearby dark areas. White subtitles over a black movie scene are a common example.
  • Zone transitions: As a bright object moves, the television must switch neighboring zones on and off. A dim leading edge, a brief halo or a change in brightness can be visible during motion.
  • Room-light performance: High peak brightness and effective dimming generally make Neo QLED a strong choice for bright living rooms.

More dimming zones and more sophisticated processing can reduce the size of halos, but they cannot eliminate the limitation entirely. The LCD layer and backlight are not pixel-level emitters, so a zone may illuminate several neighboring pixels at once.

How good is HDR on Neo QLED?

HDR is one of the main reasons to choose a high-end Neo QLED. In RTINGS’ 2024 QN90D measurements, the set reached 1,223 cd/m² in a hallway-lights scene, 1,041 cd/m² in a yellow-skyscraper scene and 501 cd/m² in a landscape-pool scene when active tone mapping was enabled. Those measurements indicate strong highlight impact in both dark and well-lit viewing environments. They are review-lab results for that model, not a guaranteed output for every screen size or future Neo QLED television.

Supported HDR formats

Format QN90D support What it means
HDR10 Yes The widely used static-metadata format supported by most HDR discs, consoles and streaming services.
HDR10+ Yes Uses dynamic scene or frame metadata so compatible content can adjust tone mapping more precisely.
HLG Yes A broadcast-oriented HDR format used by some live television and recorded programming.
Dolby Vision No Dolby Vision titles must be output by the source in HDR10 or HDR10+ to use an available HDR format on this model.

If your movie library or streaming device labels a title as Dolby Vision, check whether the player can fall back to HDR10 or HDR10+. Without that fallback, the television will not display the title in Dolby Vision. Format support can vary by model year and region, so verify the exact model code before buying.

Why HDR can look dimmer in Game Mode

Processing that improves movie HDR can add latency, so televisions often use a faster Game Mode. On the QN90D, RTINGS measured 515 cd/m², 644 cd/m² and 136 cd/m² in the same three scenes with active tone mapping while Game Mode was enabled, compared with 1,223, 1,041 and 501 cd/m² outside Game Mode. The exact difference depends on the scene and settings, but the trade-off is clear: gaming responsiveness can come with lower HDR brightness.

When comparing sets for console or PC use, look at HDR brightness in Game Mode rather than relying only on the television’s brightest movie-mode number.

Will a Neo QLED TV suffer burn-in?

Permanent OLED-style burn-in is not expected from the LCD-based QN90D. Samsung Canada’s support guidance states, “Fortunately, Samsung QLED TVs are not susceptible to screen burn-in at all.” The explanation identifies static news tickers, channel logos, sports scores and fixed game graphics as typical burn-in risks for emissive displays, with OLED televisions being particularly sensitive.

RTINGS likewise says in its QN90D expected-reliability section that there is “also no possibility of burn-in or image retention.” For a household that leaves a news channel on for many hours, uses a fixed game HUD every day or displays a computer desktop continuously, this is a meaningful advantage over OLED technology.

What the burn-in qualification does not mean

No burn-in does not mean that every part of the television is indestructible. A Neo QLED can still develop a failed LED, power-supply fault, main-board problem, damaged panel, dead input or other electronic defect. Temporary image artifacts caused by a source device, cable or software should also not be confused with permanent burn-in.

Use the television’s normal screen-off or sleep behavior, keep ventilation openings clear and avoid operating it at maximum brightness unnecessarily. Those habits are sensible for heat and component longevity even though they are not burn-in prevention measures in the OLED sense.

How long should a Samsung Neo QLED last?

There is no honest universal lifespan number for every Neo QLED model. Samsung’s warranty term is not a prediction that the panel will fail when that term ends, and a single owner’s hours cannot be converted into a guaranteed date. Usage pattern, ambient temperature, brightness, ventilation, power quality and backlight construction all influence service life.

RTINGS’ accelerated longevity study, updated October 6, 2026, ran for nearly three years and accumulated more than 10,000 hours for most tested televisions. Across 100 televisions, the study recorded 20 complete failures and 24 partial failures. These are results for a test population under accelerated conditions, not a probability that your particular Neo QLED will fail after the same number of hours.

What long-term LCD testing says about uniformity

In a separate 2024 analysis, RTINGS found visible uniformity problems in more than 25% of 82 LCD televisions. The rate was 20% among full-array-local-dimming or direct-lit models and 64% among edge-lit models. Uniformity problems can appear as dirty-screen effect, bands, cloudy patches or uneven brightness, particularly on sports fields, gray test screens and slow camera pans.

That comparison suggests that direct-lit and full-array designs are generally a safer choice for uniformity than edge-lit LCDs, but it does not guarantee a perfect panel. Manufacturing variation means two units of the same model can look different.

Factors that can extend useful life

  • Heat: Leave clearance around the rear and sides instead of sealing the set tightly against a wall or cabinet.
  • Brightness: Use the lowest picture brightness that looks right in your room rather than leaving peak output engaged all day.
  • Duty cycle: A television used a few hours each evening experiences less thermal and backlight stress than one running continuously.
  • Power: A quality surge protector can reduce risk from electrical events, although it cannot prevent every power-related failure.
  • Software: Install official firmware updates when practical, especially if they address HDMI, HDR or stability problems.

Does local dimming have drawbacks?

Local dimming improves contrast by making the backlight uneven on purpose. That same behavior creates the principal trade-offs. Bright subtitles, white menus and stars can produce a glow around themselves, particularly when viewed off-axis or in a dark room. A fast-moving highlight can also reveal the television’s zone-control algorithm as a dim edge, a halo that follows the object or a short delay before the zone reaches its new level.

How to evaluate the trade-off

  • Watch subtitles: Use a movie with white text over black bars and inspect whether the halo is distracting from your normal seating position.
  • Check motion: Look at a moving bright object against a dark background, not only a static contrast pattern.
  • Test viewing angles: Blooming and black-level performance usually change as you move away from the center.
  • Match the room: A bright room can hide minor blooming that becomes obvious in a dark home theater.
  • Compare modes: Dimming strength, contrast enhancement and tone mapping may change between Movie, Filmmaker, Standard and Game settings.

Do not judge a model solely by its zone count. Processing, panel contrast, viewing angle and transition tuning can matter as much as the nominal number of zones, which manufacturers do not always publish consistently.

What should gamers look for?

RTINGS reports that the QN90D has four full-bandwidth 48 Gbps HDMI 2.1 ports, supports up to 4K at 144 Hz and works with variable refresh rate. Those connections are suitable for current consoles and high-end gaming PCs, provided the source device supports the same resolution and refresh rate.

Gaming setup checklist

  1. Connect the console or PC to one of the television’s HDMI 2.1 inputs.
  2. Use a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for 4K high-refresh signals; an older cable may cause dropouts, black screens or a lower negotiated mode.
  3. Enable Game Mode in the television’s external-device or picture settings to reduce processing delay.
  4. Turn on VRR on both the source and television when your game system supports it.
  5. Check HDR brightness in Game Mode and adjust in-game HDR calibration rather than assuming movie-mode brightness carries over.
  6. Test each HDMI input if you use several devices, because a receiver, switch or capture device can limit bandwidth.

The important compromise is that Game Mode on the QN90D is visibly dimmer in HDR than non-gaming modes. Decide whether low latency, peak HDR impact or a balance of both matters most for the games you play.

Is burn-in covered by the warranty?

Coverage is specific to the market, model code and purchase terms. Samsung Singapore’s warranty list dated April 4, 2024 included selected Neo QLED models with five-year screen-burn-in coverage and older selected models with ten-year coverage. That list cannot be generalized to televisions sold elsewhere.

Before purchase, open the warranty document for your country and check the exact model suffix. Confirm whether coverage applies to the panel, the screen-burn-in condition, labor, transport and the full ownership period. Keep the invoice and record the model and serial numbers. A warranty that covers burn-in does not necessarily cover every kind of image defect or electronic failure.

How to choose and set up a Neo QLED intelligently

Before buying

  • Confirm the exact model year, screen size and regional suffix; specifications can differ within the same family.
  • Verify HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG support if those formats matter to your sources.
  • If you own Dolby Vision content, verify that your player can output HDR10 or HDR10+.
  • Prioritize direct-lit or full-array local dimming when uniformity and dark-room contrast matter more than the thinnest cabinet.
  • Check the number and bandwidth of HDMI 2.1 ports against your console, PC, sound system and receiver needs.
  • Read the local warranty terms instead of assuming another country’s burn-in policy applies.

After installation

  1. Provide the clearance specified in the installation manual and keep vents free of dust.
  2. Run the television through its latest official software update.
  3. Choose a picture mode appropriate to the room; avoid maximum backlight output unless the ambient light requires it.
  4. Play a range of real content, including dark films, sports, subtitles and HDR games, before deciding whether local-dimming behavior is acceptable.
  5. Inspect the panel for obvious damage, dead pixels, severe clouding or unusual bands during the retailer’s return period.

Common problems and practical fixes

Halos around subtitles or bright objects

First check whether the effect changes with viewing angle or picture mode. Lowering local-dimming strength or choosing a less aggressive contrast setting can reduce the halo, although it may also raise black levels. If the effect is severe from your normal seat, exchange the panel rather than expecting a firmware setting to make an LCD behave like a pixel-level emissive display.

HDR looks dull in games

Confirm that Game Mode is responsible for the change, then run the console or PC’s HDR calibration again. Verify that the source is outputting HDR and that the HDMI cable and input support the desired signal. A dimmer Game Mode is a documented QN90D trade-off, not necessarily a defective panel.

Black screen or intermittent 4K high-refresh signal

Connect the source directly to an HDMI 2.1 input, replace the cable with a certified Ultra High Speed model and test at a lower refresh rate. Bypass switches, receivers and capture devices during diagnosis; each can reduce available bandwidth or interfere with handshake.

Uneven gray or sports-field images

Check several real scenes and allow the panel to warm up normally. Mild variation is common across LCD televisions, while strong bands or cloudy patches that remain visible in ordinary viewing should be documented with photographs and handled through the retailer’s exchange or warranty process.

Bottom line for prospective buyers

Samsung Neo QLED is a strong fit when you want high HDR brightness, effective contrast and freedom from OLED-style permanent burn-in. The QN90D demonstrates the category’s strengths with bright HDR measurements, four 48 Gbps HDMI 2.1 ports and 4K/144 Hz VRR support. Accept that local dimming can reveal blooming and moving-zone artifacts, that Game Mode reduces HDR brightness, that Dolby Vision is absent on the reviewed model, and that no source can promise a universal lifespan. Choose the exact model and warranty for your region, provide good ventilation and judge the panel with the content you actually watch and play.
