To connect a Samsung monitor, match a video output on your computer to a video input the monitor supports, connect the cable, power on the devices, and select that input on the monitor. HDMI or DisplayPort is usually the simplest choice when both devices have the same port. USB-C works only when both endpoints support video over USB-C; the connector shape alone is not enough.

1. Find a video port on both devices

Look at the monitor’s rear or underside and the computer’s video outputs. Choose a port supported for video by both devices. A direct HDMI-to-HDMI or DisplayPort-to-DisplayPort cable avoids an adapter when available. Samsung describes both HDMI and DisplayPort as carrying audio and video, but port versions and model capabilities vary. Check the monitor’s manual and the computer’s specifications before choosing a cable or expecting a particular resolution or refresh rate. Samsung’s port glossary explains the interfaces and version examples.

  • HDMI: A practical direct connection when both devices have HDMI video ports. Samsung recommends a high-quality, high-speed HDMI cable and advises checking the device manual for its supported HDMI version.
  • DisplayPort: A direct option when both ends provide DisplayPort. Check the monitor manual for its DisplayPort version and confirm the computer supports the desired mode.
  • USB-C: Use it for display only if the computer’s USB-C port and the monitor’s specific USB-C port both support video. Some ports serve data or peripherals rather than display input.

2. Choose the cable or adapter for your setup

Use a cable that fits the ports and supports the display mode you need. HDMI, DisplayPort, and USB-C do not guarantee the same performance: the monitor, computer, port versions, cable, adapter, and settings all affect the available resolution and refresh rate.

Samsung’s U.S. port glossary gives interface examples—not guarantees for every monitor or computer—of HDMI 2.0 up to 4K at 60 Hz, HDMI 2.1 up to 4K at 120 Hz, DisplayPort 1.2 up to 4K at 60 Hz, and DisplayPort 1.4 up to 4K at 120 Hz or 5K at 60 Hz. The glossary also describes USB-C as supporting up to 4K at 60 Hz, but that does not mean every USB-C port or Samsung monitor supports video. The exact model documentation and both connected devices determine what will work. See Samsung’s port glossary and verify your model before buying a cable based on a target mode.

When the ports do not match

An adapter can bridge a specific mismatch—for example, HDMI from one device to DVI on the other—but identify both ports and the signal direction before buying. Samsung cautions that an adapter connection is limited by the weaker connection, so it may not deliver the monitor’s maximum display quality. Samsung’s connection guide covers adapters and basic setup.

USB-C exceptions are model-specific

Do not assume that every USB-C port on a monitor accepts computer video. Samsung’s U.S. gaming-monitor troubleshooting page describes a USB-C connection that functions as a USB hub and says, “Video function is not supported through this input. Please use an HDMI or DisplayPort connection to play content from a PC.” That instruction applies to the peripheral-port case covered on that page, not to every Samsung monitor. Check Samsung’s gaming-monitor guidance for its scope and model-specific details.

For the Smart Monitor M80B specifically, Samsung Singapore says to use a USB-C 3.1 Gen 2 10G cable for proper screen output. Its instructions distinguish the USB-C port for the source device from a separate port for peripherals, and note that USB-C Preference settings affect resolution and data speed. Do not apply that cable requirement or port layout to other Samsung models. Read Samsung’s M80B instructions.

3. Connect the monitor and start the devices

  1. Place the monitor and connect the signal cable to the monitor and computer.
  2. Connect the monitor’s power cable to the monitor and a power outlet.
  3. Turn on the computer, then check the monitor for a picture.

Samsung’s general connection guide says a special driver is not required for the monitor to be ready after connection. Treat that as general setup guidance, not a guarantee for every operating system, feature, or accessory; consult the exact product and computer documentation if a feature needs additional software or setup. Samsung’s setup sequence is model-agnostic guidance, while individual menus and capabilities can differ.

4. Select the right monitor input

If the screen says “Check Signal Cable” or stays blank, make sure the monitor is set to the port you actually used. Use the monitor’s Source button or joystick to open the input list, then choose the matching label—for example, HDMI 1, HDMI 2, or DisplayPort. The available labels and control method depend on the model. Samsung recommends changing the signal source when this message appears. See Samsung’s input-source guidance.

5. Troubleshoot a blank screen or “Check Signal Cable” message

  1. Reseat the cable. Disconnect and firmly reconnect it at both the computer and monitor. Confirm the computer is powered on.
  2. Check the selected input. Set the monitor source to the same physical port where the cable is connected.
  3. Confirm the computer port outputs video. Some computer ports that look like display connectors may not provide the signal you need. Check the computer’s specifications as well as the monitor’s supported inputs.
  4. Verify USB-C video support at both ends. Confirm that the computer port, monitor port, and cable support the required video mode. A USB-C connector alone does not establish display support.
  5. For a DisplayPort issue, check version settings. In one Samsung gaming-monitor troubleshooting case, Samsung advises checking whether the PC supports DisplayPort 1.4, trying a different DisplayPort version setting on the monitor (including 1.1 or 1.2 in that case), reconnecting, and trying another cable or adapter if needed. Menu names and available versions vary by model. Use Samsung’s model-scoped DisplayPort guidance.
  6. Use model-specific USB-C instructions. On the M80B, verify the source-device port and USB-C Preference setting described in Samsung’s M80B support page.
  7. Consult the exact model manual. If the picture still does not appear, use the manual and support page for the monitor’s model number rather than applying another model’s menu steps. Samsung’s glossary directs users to the manual to confirm interface versions. Find the port guidance here.
