If your Samsung monitor displays a picture but stays silent, the cause is usually one of four things: the model has no speakers, the monitor is muted or set to the wrong speaker mode, the computer is sending audio to another output, or the cable/source path is faulty. Start by confirming what your exact model supports, then work through the monitor, source, and connection checks below.
Do not assume that an HDMI socket guarantees sound. Samsung says many newer monitors include speakers, but not every monitor has built-in speakers or supports audio over HDMI. The model code, source device, operating system, and cable type determine which steps apply.
1. Confirm that your Samsung monitor can produce sound
Video and audio are separate capabilities. A monitor can show a perfectly clear image while offering no way to play sound itself. Find the exact model code on the rear label, the original packaging, or the monitor’s on-screen information page, then check that model’s manual and specifications.
Check for built-in speakers
Look for a speaker specification, speaker grilles, or volume controls in the manual. Samsung’s general guidance that “many newer monitors include built-in speakers” is not a guarantee for a particular model. Gaming, business, and older displays may have no internal speakers at all.

Check for an audio-out or headphone jack
Some Samsung monitors do not contain speakers but can pass audio to headphones or powered speakers through a 3.5 mm audio-out jack. In that arrangement, the monitor must receive an audio signal from the source, and you listen through the device connected to the jack. A jack labeled service, microphone, or line-in is not the same as an audio-out connection.
Do not infer audio support from HDMI
HDMI can carry digital audio, but the monitor must be designed to accept and use it. Samsung specifically cautions that not all monitors have speakers or support audio over HDMI. DisplayPort audio is likewise dependent on the monitor and source. DVI or VGA may be available as video alternatives on some equipment, but the supported audio route is model-dependent.
2. Check the monitor’s volume, mute, and speaker selection
Once you have confirmed that the monitor can play or pass audio, use its physical controls or on-screen display (OSD). Menu names differ by model, so use the manual if an item is missing.

Unmute and raise the volume
- Press the monitor’s joystick, menu, or volume button.
- Open the sound or audio section.
- Make sure mute is off and raise the volume above zero.
- Play a known audio clip while adjusting the level.
A monitor can retain a mute state after a headset, console, or different input was used. Check the mute indicator again after switching inputs.

Select the internal speakers when appropriate
Models with a Speaker Select setting may offer internal/TV speakers and external speakers as separate choices. Select the built-in or TV speaker option when you want sound from the monitor itself. If external speakers are selected while none are connected, the monitor can show Not Available or remain silent even though the source is sending audio.
Check the active input
Verify that the monitor is displaying the same HDMI or DisplayPort input connected to the source you are testing. Audio settings can be associated with the active input on some models. Disconnect unused sources temporarily so you are not adjusting the wrong input.
3. Choose the Samsung monitor as the source device’s audio output
A computer can route video to a monitor while continuing to send sound to its internal speakers, a USB headset, Bluetooth headphones, a dock, or another display. Select the monitor’s digital audio endpoint explicitly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWindows
- Select the speaker icon on the taskbar.
- Open the output-device list (the arrow or device selector beside the volume control).
- Choose the entry corresponding to the Samsung monitor, HDMI, or DisplayPort audio device.
- Raise the Windows volume and confirm that mute is disabled.
- Open Settings → System → Sound and verify the same device is selected under output. Use the device’s test control if available.
The name may identify the graphics adapter or connection rather than the monitor brand. If no HDMI or DisplayPort output appears, check for disabled devices and install or update the graphics driver. Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance specifically recommends checking graphics drivers when the monitor is absent from the output choices.

macOS
- Open Apple menu → System Settings → Sound (or System Preferences → Sound on older macOS versions).
- Select the Samsung monitor, HDMI, or DisplayPort device under Output.
- Move the output volume slider up and clear mute.
- Play audio again after the selection changes.
If the monitor does not appear, reconnect the cable, wake the display, and check whether a dock or adapter is hiding the display’s audio endpoint. The exact device name depends on the Mac, graphics hardware, and adapter.
Consoles, streaming boxes, and other sources
Open the source device’s audio-output settings and choose HDMI or the display as the destination. Turn off options that force optical, USB, Bluetooth, or controller audio if you intend to use the monitor. Also check the source’s own master volume and mute controls. A console can output video successfully while its audio format or destination is incompatible with the monitor.
4. Reseat and isolate the cable and source
Intermittent contacts, damaged cables, adapters, and source ports can leave video working while audio fails. Test one variable at a time rather than changing everything simultaneously.

- Stop playback and power off the source if its manufacturer recommends doing so before reconnecting.
- Unplug the video cable from the monitor and source.
- Inspect the plugs for bent, damaged, or contaminated contacts.
- Reconnect each end firmly, then select the correct monitor input.
- Retest with the source’s audio output selected.
Use a known-working cable
If possible, test with a cable that already carries both picture and sound on another compatible setup. A cable that works for video is not automatically proven to be reliable for the complete audio path, especially when adapters or docks are involved. Do not buy a replacement cable until this swap points to the existing cable.

Swap the source and listening device
Use the same monitor port and cable with another known-working playback device. Then connect headphones or powered speakers directly to the original computer or console. These two swaps narrow the fault:
- If another source produces sound through the monitor, investigate the original source’s output selection, drivers, or audio settings.
- If no source produces sound but the monitor’s own test works, investigate cables, adapters, and source compatibility.
- If the original source plays through headphones but not through the monitor, the monitor output selection or connection path is the likely difference.
- If neither headphones nor the monitor produce sound, fix the source’s audio system before diagnosing the display.
Choose a direct connection when troubleshooting
When both devices support it, Samsung recommends HDMI or DisplayPort for the connection. Remove splitters, capture devices, docking stations, and converters for the first test because each can change or block the audio signal. Reintroduce them one at a time after direct operation is confirmed.
5. Run Samsung’s built-in sound test, if your model provides one
Some remote-equipped Samsung displays include a diagnostic tone independent of the connected source. On those models, open Support → Self Diagnosis → Sound Test. The exact path and availability vary by model and software version.
If the sound test fails
A failed test indicates that the monitor’s own audio system needs attention. Confirm once that the volume is audible and the intended speaker option is selected, then request service through Samsung Support. Do not spend time reinstalling computer drivers when the monitor cannot reproduce its own diagnostic sound.

If the sound test passes
A passing test shows that the monitor can generate sound. Continue with the source-output selection, cable swap, and alternate-source tests. The remaining fault is more likely to be in the source device, selected output, adapter, or cable than in the monitor’s speaker hardware.
If there is no sound-test menu
Not having a sound test does not prove a fault. Many monitors simply lack that diagnostic feature. Use the direct source and cable swaps instead, then contact Samsung Support if the model supports the setup and remains silent.

Your best route depends on the monitor’s hardware and whether you need sound from the display or merely a convenient listening connection.
| Audio route | What must be supported | What you select | When it is useful |
|---|---|---|---|
| Built-in monitor speakers | The exact Samsung model must include speakers and accept audio from the selected input. | Monitor volume on; internal/TV speakers selected; monitor/HDMI/DisplayPort chosen on the source. | Simple desk setup with no separate audio hardware. |
| Monitor audio-out/headphone jack | The model must provide an audio-out jack and pass audio from the active source. | Monitor or digital connection selected on the source; headphones or powered speakers connected to the monitor’s output. | Useful when the monitor has no speakers but offers a supported output. |
| Speakers or headphones connected directly to the computer or console | The source must have a compatible analog, USB, Bluetooth, or other audio output. | Direct speaker or headphone device selected on the source. | Best fallback when the monitor has no audio hardware or its audio path is incompatible. |
Powered speakers require their own power and the correct connector. Wired headphones are also a practical diagnostic tool because they reveal whether the source is producing sound without involving the monitor’s speakers.
7. Avoid common misdiagnoses
- “It has HDMI, so it must have speakers.” HDMI presence does not establish built-in speakers or HDMI audio support.
- “The picture works, so the cable is fine.” Video can remain visible when the audio path, adapter, or cable conductors are failing.
- “Not Available” means the monitor is broken. It can mean external speakers are selected with none connected.
- Every Samsung menu is identical. Speaker selection and sound-test menus vary by model; follow the exact manual.
- Install drivers first. Drivers matter when the monitor is missing from the computer’s output list, but they will not add speakers to a model that has none.
- Use an ARC soundbar connection automatically. Samsung’s gaming-monitor guidance applies only when the specific monitor has an ARC-capable HDMI input and the soundbar arrangement supports it. Ordinary computer-monitor HDMI connections should not be assumed to provide ARC.
8. Decide when to request service
Request Samsung service when a supported monitor fails its own sound test, or when it remains silent after you have confirmed the model’s audio capability, selected the correct speaker and source output, reseated the connection, and tested a known-working cable or alternate source. Have the model code, source device, operating system, cable type, and results of each swap ready for the support representative.
If the monitor has no speakers, service cannot add that capability. Use a supported audio-out jack if present, or connect speakers or headphones directly to the source. Samsung’s support site can locate manuals and service information by model code; use the manual to verify menu names, port functions, and any model-specific audio requirements.
